View Full Version : Wifi hotsync exasporation!!!

Thought I'd try again to set up my WiFi hotsync... Good news, I finally set up my SSID and WEP so I'm no longer open network (If you were on my network I'd see you sitting in front of my house or you'd be hiding in the cornfield!)
Bad news, even with everything set manually and appropriately, still no wireless sync. Everything hooks up and works set manually OR auto... Turned off my firewall (I feel naked!). Checked and rechecked my settings.
Soooooo.... what would be causing the no connect on my PC side? I checked all the TC/Ip settings, Network hotsync is checked, my Hotsync name is checked. I even unchecked and rechecked for good measure.
It's not life or death that I get the wireless Hotsync to work, but it'd be nice to be able to modify a spreadsheet and sync it up to the desktop from my easy chair!!!!
For reference, I couldn't get my NX to wireless sync either. So I'm leaning towards a PC side problem. PC is a win98se with all current updates/patches...

Can you connect to the net with your NetFront?

Primary PC at !!, XP means a new box and business hasn't been good enough for that lately and 100% connect via the much-maligned Netfront :)... When I push the WiFi Hotsync it connects to the WLAN , then sits for 30 secs or so and then gives me an "unable to connect to PC" message (Hotsync indicators stay grey as well)
It's gotta be the PC, but I've checked everthing on the list at this site>http://www.otakunozoku.com/wifihotsync/ and I have Lansync rather than local sync selected which I believe is an error on that page....
Confuzzled... :( Guess I'll go back thru the settings ONE MORE TIME!!!!

I agree, it sounds more like a PC issue, I don't know if additional software is needed. I am using Win XP and never tried it with Win 98.
Yes, the Lansync item is an error! Sounds like you have everything else setup right.

You have to Change the "Primary PC Setup" in HotySync app. The Primary PC Name has to be blank.
Sony support says "IMPORTANT: The handheld may not synchronize properly if the Primary PC Name box is populated"
Check Sony support on their website for detailed instructions. I have to delete the Primary PC Name setting before each hotsync.

Yes, but the double exclamation marks is fine and they don't need to be deleted.
Use primary pc name as "!!" without the quotes. It works for me and whole lot of other users. Try it and see if it works, I bet you it does :)!

oneeye, what are your pc hotsync manager settings? Try checking the modem setting in addition to the network setting.

Why would the modem settings effect wireless Hotsync?

Maybe because the Hotsync setting on your Clie has to be set to modem not local? The Wireless LAN setting then shows up.

Yeah, put it on modem and leave it there!!!
Like Bucalo9 says and the link below says.

You said that you checked everything on the above site. LAN Sync is wrong as you pointed out.

Alraedy have it (Clie) set to modem, etc... Bucalo9 referenced the "PC Hotsync manager" modem settings.... which to me seem to have no bearing on network Hotsync. I'm still curious why that was a potential conflict in their mind.
Trust me kids, everything else is set up right. It's something to do with my desktop. Seeing as it's a little more complex...:)

not (Clie), but (Desktop)
Go to hotsync manger icon in system tray, make sure modem is set in addition to network. You may be right, it's something to do with your desktop and I recall reading in lit about setting up wifi hotsync to also set modem, as modem setting is used on (Clie).

Freakin' UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!! Seeing as I'd tried everything else and figured there was no harm in it, I checked/turned on "modem" in the desktop Hotsync manager. VOILA!!!! Wireless Hotsync.... Bucalo9, you da man!!!!! Why that makes a difference is beyond me... I didn't even change the modem settings in setup either.

Why did that work? Mine is set to local usb and network, but not modem and I connect fine.

yeah oneeye!
stronggeek, same here-
its gotta be a glitch. eventually the hotsync manager will better reflect wireless connections and not look like a modem connection.

bucalo, I'm amazed you came up with the answer considering your own set up is similiar to mine. Great job!

I had to check the original post after your last post Larry. I missed that windows 98 deal. You might be right. I guess I'm drinking the cool-aide, but I don't know the flavor! :)

Ya know, now that I think about it, I had garlicky supper last night.....:D
So rather than it being a goofy windoze 98se problem, it was Larry's hex, broken by the garlic.....

...using windows2000 on company supplied laptop. It seems such a long time ago that I got the NX and tried to get the wifi hotsync to work. I think the modem info came from a Palm support page, probably made to support the cellular wireless Palm. Anyway, it was eventually the !! in Larry's original post that got my wifi hotsync going. Don't think any of those posts exist anymore.
As for the hex, hope it ain't aimed at me. Otherwise I 'll have ta leverage my 100% Sicilian status and call nonny, and have her put a real Sicilian hex on you all. Of course that means no ill effect on your Clies, but you would have a chronic headache till she reversed the spell. I could also call the family business in northern NJ. Be afraid if you see more waste management vehicles in your regular day. (watching too many Sopranos re-runs):D

LOL, I'll watch my step around the waste management dumpsters!!!!
Thanx for the help everyone. And kudos to you Bucalo9 for saving my wireless Hotsync day!!!!
