Just let me say it looks really sharp in real life! I MIGHT attempt to attach a see though cover instead.

oh my.....you really cut it half....
yOyOYoo
04-16-2003, 06:48 PM
Pretty nice. What did you use to cut the cover with?
I'm thinking of modifying my clie cover by making a cutout in the center of it, a cutout that would only reveal the screen and hardkey buttons. Then maybe outfitting a thick clear plastic sheet in the empty "square" over where the screen is.
This way I figure I can use the clie, with hardkeys and jogdial and back button, without having to flip open the cover at all. I would only need to flip open the cover when I wanted to access the keyboard.
Just a thought, but that would void my warranty reallly bad.

Too bad Sony doesn't provide replacement hard covers for the TG50.

I used a dremel. I been using it and it's great! I assigned the buttons of the remote control to the up and down scroll bar ON FRONT of the pda not the wheel on the side. I also assigned the 3-4 buttons for volume up and down. Now it really feels like a true remote and I DON'T have to have the big old screen WAY UP in the air to use the buttons.
If I need to have the Clie fixed I will send it without the screen cover, no big deal. It's not like sony would want the cover to fix internal parts. I want to try to get these covers somehow so I can make more and sell them. If anyone wants this done I can do it for you for $8.00.
Don't worry I won't mess it up I have done way harder things than this. Check out my website I make a living toying with things. WWW.SILVERSLIDER2.COM

Lookin pretty cool George! Have you had any problems with the buttons turning on while in your pocket? I used to have a Silverslider when they first came out way back. Nice product! I am getting anxoius to go ahead and cut in a plastic window. Question for you. Would you use some kind of stencil to mark out the windows and use as a "guide" for the dremel. I am scared that unless my hands are perfect I am not going to be able to cutout the screen uniformally. Any suggestions?

I'll just say this. George rocks, and he knows how to toy with his gadgets! SilverSliders are great for iPaqs. I look forward to seeing more Clie-oriented stuff from you, George!

Thanks guys for the nice comments!
As far as sliders for the ipaq I have a cover pack that has a built in cf board with a leather FLIP UP cover that's really thin, thinner than the SS2. I also make a SS5 with built in battery and the flip up leather cover.
I also slim down the XDA external battery half the size than the original one. I have a thread on pocketpcpassions where now they have a really cool holster for the xda and my modified battery.
For the person that said I'm crazy all I can say is being crazy is what feeds my family. When I first made the silver slider people thought I was nuts, but now many pocket pc users appriciate very much what I have done.
The clie cover is half the size so that takes half the geekness out of my clie. This is just my oppinion because I just did not like lifting that big screen cover. Made the smallness of the clie look silly when it was up in the air. Besides the cover is not made of any super quality material. Plastic and what seems to be thin aluminum of some kind. I love what I did, and like when I made the first silver slider I did this for ME. Anyone wants to do it go for it you WON'T regret it! Unless you mess it up :-)
I can do it for you just let me know, no problem if you don't. For the person who asked my 2 cents on adding a clear cover. All I can say is measure it very good and take your time. Make sure you use the right tools and it will go well. What I would do is tape the are where I am going to cut and than do the cutting. Don't use a pencil use tape because it will help you make a better cut. You can also double the tape to keep the cutter straighter.
I wish I had time to look for some clear plastic. When I make some time I will do one with clear plastic and post pictures. I hope ONE of you guys try this modification so you see how nice this really is!
Thanks.

George, if you were to produce a modified cover with a clear plastic window over the screen, but the keys still covered, I think you'd have a few takers. I'd be one for sure.

Hey, George I have an idea for you that would be popular with the NX70V; a case that has a battery extender/charger built into it. Just and idea for you, along with the countless others you get from people.

Well if THE George bought a TG50 than I think that's reason enough for me :D

If you started making custom covers for our TG50s, ones with a clear plastic surrounded by the sony aluminum tht would be awesome! I think you would have many customers.
Then we could use our TG50s without flipping open the screen cover at all.
Maybe we could look up a contact or datebook or time, simply through the clear plastic. That would be awesome! I would pay $25 for it! maybe more depending on the design!

George,
Can you post higher res. pictures of the TG50 cover somewhere?
It looks great but wanna see it up close. Are there any sharp edges?
I want to get this done to mine and have a Dremel with all the attachments. If you gave me some hints and I feel comfortable doing this myself I would send you $5. Or just sending it to you for you to do it, how much would you charge?
drop me a line at:

James I will post higher resolutions at a later time. Right now I'm trying to get some feedback.
Here's the CLEAR Bscreen cover I just did. I had to add the clear plastic from the inside so as to not see the glue. I want to add the clear cover from the TOP but I need to figure out how to glue it without the glue showing on the sides.
I can also add the clear plastic all the way down. In other words a see through cover without cutting it in hlaf. I like the half cut so I can use the keyboard without having to pop open the screen.
Let me know what you guys think, it will look much better once I add the clear cover on the top of the cover.
GM
UPDATE; I got the clear cover on top and looks and feels really really nice!
I will post pics in a few minutes.

why on earth do that??? Sony pays big $$$$ to their R&D members and ALL products have to meet the senior managers approval before they ever go into production and EACH of their products go through several design changes before they are released.
U, my friend, have just destroyed their hard work!!
Looks cool though, any chance you will get a job with them???:D

George of SilverSlider! Glad to see you here!
I did actually see pics of the O2 XDA battery you modified for Philip (ptorrone here in ClieSource). Its too bad though that I wasn't able to see it when I met him in Redmond. But he did mention that time that he had just sent you the XDA extended battery for modification.
So, any other cool ideas for the Clie line? I would suggest a Clie NX slider compartment for memory sticks, compact flash wifi card, cf memory, and bluetooth memory stick. :)

NZ007, I wish I could get a job with any company so I can put so many ideas I have in production. It's easy to come yp with ideas, the hard part is mass producing them. Look at all the ideas people gave me here, add that times the three years I been doing this type of work and you have a lot of experience and ideas!
One day someone might offer me a job that I can do from my home that would be really cool. Anyone interested in a guy that can make you good money? He,he.
Anyway, I will continue on my own till an offer I can resist comes my way. I really like this idea I just did, now I need to get another screen cover to make a clear cover that keeps the sides of the original cover but has the clear plastic in the middle Any one want to send me the cover so I can try it? I will give you a good price.

George, if you kept the outside perimeter, and replaced the metal sheet on the cover with a clear plastic/acrylic/glass piece in the center that would look AMAZING!
just wondering, how easy is it to take off and on the flip cover? Is it a difficult thing to do? Is there a chance of breaking the cover in the process?
GEORGE, can't wait to see you make the clear cover, wow I would pay a handful for it! Can you see the possibilities? You could use laser etching to etch the original "CLIE" logo right onto the clear plastic middle piece. That would be awesome man!

COOL!!!!!!
George M
04-17-2003, 10:51 PM
I'm glad all of you like the cover, thanks.
yOyOYoo,
That is what I meant when I said I could add a clear cover all the way down. It'smuch easier to do it this way, and it is not hard but you can ruin the cover if you're not careful.
The metal is glued on to the plastic so just pry it out. It could be reused if you pull it out carefully (but why right). Now after the metal is out comes the tricky part. Just cut carefully and make the cuts a straight as possible. What I did to hide the glue lines from showing up is I sanded the sides of the clear plastic to roughen the clear area and that helped out just fine!
Well, have fun doing it and please post pics when you get it done.

What would be good for me, would be some replacement part for the indentions that are left on either side of the center bit (the white part where the bluetooth and mic are) when I remove the flap totally.
You see, I use mine without the flap (in a Capdase leather case), and the TG50 looks a bit silly without the 2 side thingys. Besides, I think I see a hole at the left side, and am worried about dust going in throught there.
yOyOYoo
04-18-2003, 02:13 AM
Well LukeToh, you could modify the flip cover, and cut it off, leaving only the rounded sides.... seeing as how you say you never use the cover... actually I think whatever you do, without the flip its gonna look a little weird, cuz the plastic white part bulges out.
George, NO way I couldn't do it myself.. I don't have the guts or the will! I wish sony would sell other covers though...
Another modification i've thought of looking into was taking the TG50 apart, and replacing the orange LED lights with white ones, or maybe light blue lights, imagine how classy the keyboard backlight would be then!

Look at the C3 picture and you will get an idea of what it will look like with what yoyoYoo mentioned.
Somas 1, I only modify existing items I don't actually make them from scratch.
yoyoYoo, Go for it don't be afraid. I like the orange lights so I would not change that at all. I have to find a tool to remove the back cover of the TG50 as I like to see what's inside. Sony added a phillip style screw and some strange star looking screw.

I know, there is already a cf sled for the tg. Of course it won't be really useful unless ayasin gets his driver to support it. Look here: http://shop.brando.com.hk/pega-cf60.php

I remember that sled whe reviewed by the gadgeteer website. Looks pretty big and bulky, would like to see the inside guts of it. That's the only way to know if it can be trimmed and slimmed down.
Like when I first opened Compaq's cf expansion pack it was funny. On the outside you had a BULKY sleeve all the way around but on the inside about a credit card size cf board. I was shocked whe I saw that.

Thanks guys.
I hope to have some items for TG50 soon, I have a contact that wants to make these covers with me. Hopefully I'm not jumping the gun here but thought I mention this.
I also plan to have some leather holster that hold the TG50 and the NZ90. They are made by http://tuff-as-nuts.com/207-208.html
and I'm hoping to get a good price to resell them. Before I approach the owner what do you guys think, will you be interested in these holsters?
I received the one for the NZ90 and fits perfectly! The quality on these holster are simply great. The clip is super nice and strong, the case fits smoothly on the side of the the pants.
Please let me know what you guys think, it will help me decide if I should offer these or not on my website.
THANKS.

Hi George,
Do you happen to know where I can get replacement flip lids for TG50 if I wish to modify the cover?
I do still want to keep the original one in case I need it, so won't mind experimenting on 3rd party flips, if available.
