The filename you end up downloading is:

MSProNX_enUS.prc

so I'm guessing it is IDENTICAL to the one that the U.S. website should be releasing soon.

Anyway, I tried it on my US unit (after backing up) and it works great. Audio Player, Movie Player, Movie Recorder, Clie Camera, and Voice Recorder all work great.

Takes about 200KB of RAM.

Have you tried installing the update into Flash with Jackflash?

It's about time Sony put it out :)!

contempt,

No, I haven't tried JackFlashing the upgrade files.

Providing that they still work in flash, this will save some RAM, but won't solve the problem of not being able to access MS Pro after a hard reset. Remember that you have to run FlashEnable after a hard reset in order to see ANYTHING that you've put in flash.

What I'd love to see (but never expect to happen) is that Sony comes out with a complete OS upgrade (maybe even to 5.2) that has all these updates they've recently released but that they all go into flash. That would be sweet.

Sony's not going to come out with an OS upgrade. It's just not their style.

As for this new upgrade file, I'm about to reformat my MSPro through CLIE Files and see how the speed is compared to my FAT16 format I performed in Windows. I'll also check the size limitations and let you all know. Figure there's no need for having these upgrade files AND our fat16 format workaround.

Alright, so I installed the MSPro updated software, copied the contents of my MSPro to my computer (took awhile), reformatted my MSPro with the new CLIE Files, copied back all contents. Here's what I discovered:

- When the MSPro was reformatted as FAT16, I had 456 megs of files on it. With the new CLIE Files format, the exact same number of files now occupy 468 megs! Somehow, I just lost 12 megs of usable space. Again, it's the same number of files.
- I do not notice ANY speed increases from the CLIEFiles format. I've run all of the built-in MS apps and run files from Palm/Launcher. No increase.

So if anyone can find out any disadvantage to the FAT16 format workaround, I say keep it as such.

Thanks for the info contempt. No one with the jap drivers answered those questions. Glad you were kind enough to share your experience. I think I'll keep mine as is-formatted... for now.  :)

Thanks for letting us know.

BTW, the web site you mention is not the European one, it's the Asia/Pacific one (it's mentionned on the first page top right corner).

I only mention this because it can be relevant: units sold in Asia (Hong Kong & Singapore, not in Japan because they have different versions of the device for the Japanese market anyway) are actually identical to those sold in the US: in both cases they are enUS versions.

In Europe, on the other hand, Sony releases devices containing three languages (French/German/English), and there are some differences as well (some of the initial US system updates have been included in the European ROM right from the start)...

Some European updates/patches may possibly work on a US device (they generally include "stripped" files and localized overlays: enUS, frFR and deDE), if you use the enUS overlay you'll certainly be fine on a US device, but if there's a US vs Europe notable difference related to the update, it may fail on a US device.

More generally, updates and patches tend to be available first in Japan (but the language difference is a real obstacle), then in Asia (Hong Kong & Singapore), then in the US, and finally in Europe.

Historically, every patch released in HKG & SIN has worked on US devices (I tested most!) ;)

FYI, this is written on the Sony Asia Pacific site about the limitations of the Clie with MS Pro:

"8. MovieRecorder
The maximum length of a recorded movie is limited to 1 hour.

9. MoviePlayer
The maximum size of each movie is 128 MB after conversion.
If the size of a movie is larger than 128 MB, the movie will be divided into multiple files.

10. Related PC applications
Image Converter: The maximum size of each movie is 128 MB after conversion.
If the size of a movie is larger than 128 MB, the Image Converter will divide the movie into multiple files."

Just tried the update on my UK machine and the MP3's still only play the first second or so of the tune. Anyone else had this? Dene

euroclie,

Oops! Thanks for the clarification.

I made a big assumption when I read the following on CliePlanet:

The MS Pro update for British Clies has been released (at last)- it covers the NX70V, NZ90 and TG50 and will allow full use of the internal programs such as MP3 and Movie Recording etc. I must say that since I received my 1GB stick last week my use of the NX has increased beyong belief:) Thanks to Kenny

no problem, i wanted to know this as well and couldn't find any info, so ... mind as well do it yourself.

but i am curious if anyone has moved the files to flash. didn't feel like being a guinea pig on that one, after dealing with about 4 hard resets last week after installing some buggy software.
