In 1SRC Podcast 78 I review Mark/Space The Missing Sync for Palm OS and I talk about my Treo 700p OCD problem. I also talk about this week's 1SRC editorial, and what has been going on with Palm's stock price. [details (http://www.1src.com/?m=show&id=1569)]

How does NewEgg.com get their prices down so low? I'm rather happy with my PNY 1GB card, maybe I'll go for the 2GB card once I get the new Treo. Thanks for the tip, JA.

Hi Alan,
I've been doing the same thing, OCD with the 700p. I keep checking the website hoping that the "order received" changes to "shipped". Last night I pulled up the web page using Opera, Joel gave me this tip. You can set the webpage to automatically refresh. I had mine refreshing every minute, woke up a few times nothing changed. This weekend is going to be long, but we'll get them soon enough Alan. Great podcast as usual. Have a great weekend everyone.

I guess the long dog days of summer are really here! Maybe I should print out a color picture of the 700p and mount it on some form poster board they have down in the drafting department and carry that around with me.

Or you can use a piece of wood and a toothpick like Jeff Hawkins used to do before the Palm Pilot, lol (from Piloting the Palm). I just read at treocentral that 4gb cards are working on the 700p.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I called the Palm store to check the status earlier today, and they told me they aren't shipping any 700p Treos until Tuesday.

(I ordered the Sprint one also).

Alan:

Thanks for the review. I have been holding off buying a Mac because of the poor implementation of the Palm Desktop which I think is one of Palm's best features on the PC side. Can you tell me how they sync memos? I use memos as mini databases and need this feature veyr much. If they sync memos, what is used to open the memo database?

Thanks for a great review...

Hello Bill-

Palm Desktop for the Mac does have a memos application similar to the one in the PC version of the Palm Desktop. In my opinion, the interface is poor, but it works. The Missing Sync has it's own Memos application and conduit. The data is the same, but the MissingSync's interface is much better. I've got the MissingSync Memos conduit turned on.

So, you have two options, the Palm Desktop Memo application, or the MissingSync application. I'd use the MissingSync conduit whenever possible.

Called Palm this morning, they gave me my UPS tracking number and said the treo shipped this morning, I'll be getting it next business day, Tuesday. It feels like this took forever, lol.

I also use the Missinc Sync, it's so much better than what Palm gives us. I use the memo sync application as well. Great review Alan.

Thank you.

I got an email from Palm this morning (1:45am) that my Treo was "shipped". No tracking number yet. But I'm expecting to get it by Wednesday.

sorry to bother you, but one more question:
what do you use to read, create or edit pdfs on the Mac? I use ereader to read and docreader to create or edit pdfs on my PCs. I am not aware of similar programs for the Mac....

maybe you should do a podcast on Palm and Mac :)

It is no bother. Just keep in mind that I don't use the Mac full time anymore. As and IT professional, I try to keep current on Windows/Mac OS/Linux as much as possible. Let's see if I can't answer you questions.

To read PDFs on the Mac, you can use the built-in Preview application that reads .PDF files. You can also download and install Adobe's Acrobat Reader.

To create PDFs that are 12 pages or less, you can use Mac OS X's built-in PDF generation software. Just "print" your document, and click the PDF button on the print dialog box. If you have more than 12 pages, multiple documents will be created, each file will be 12 pages. If you want to create a single document with more than 12 pages, you'll need to purchase the full version of Adobe Acrobat. You will be able to edit PDF files with Acrobat. There are probably other less expensive third-party .PDF file generation software packages, but I haven't used them. At home on my PowerBook, I haven't a need for 13+ page PDF files. At work, I have Adobe Acrobat 6 installed on my G4 tower.

If you have more Mac OS X/Palm questions, just let me know.

one more question, please...

on the Mac side what do you use to read, create and edit PDB files?

I use ereader for windows to read and docreader to create, edit and read PDBs.

I am not aware of anything equivalent on the Mac side except for ereader but this is just a reader. I need to be able to create and edit PDBs if I swithc to the Mac.

Please advise...

Maybe you should do a podcast covering the Palm & Mac...

eReader is also available for the Mac. I don't think I've ever used docreader to create or edit .pdb files. What kind of content are you putting in the .pdb file?

I use Documents To Go as my Palm OS Swiss Army knife because it can read native Microsoft Office documents, Adobe PDF files, and plain text files (.txt).

If you need to create .pdb ebooks on Mac OS X, you can use eReader's free Drop Book or the $30 eReader Studio. More details are available on the eReader site (http://www.ereader.com/product/browse/software).

Anyone else second the Mac/Palm primer podcast? If you do, please submit questions to me.

Anyone else second the Mac/Palm primer podcast?
Alan G

Absolutely! I added a Powerbook to my computing environment or my personal use and have been reluctant to begin syncing my Palm with it. (I still use a PC at home for work). Plan to buy Missing Sync, but would love to hear a podcast devoted to Palm and the Mac.

Another good podcast Alan.

I'm not a MAC user so there was alot to take in this time around. I have alot of friends who prefer MAC's, so the podcast was helpful so that I can better support the palm needs for them.

I can't wait to find out how your new carrier Sprint fairs as far as coverage is concerned.
