View Full Version : problem with lexar ms
I just bought a lexar 128 mb memory stick from amazon. maybe I'm an idiot but: when I tried to transfer the data from my sony memory stick, I had problems. Specifically, I transferred all of the files (using a flash card reader) from my sony ms to my desktop then replaced the sony ms with my lexar and tried to drag the files into it. I kept getting a " disc is write protected error for some ( but not all) of the files. I tried to format it several ways to no avail. The switch on the back is in the appropriate position. Am I missing something simple or is this product defective? My hope was to take the sony ms back to best buy for a refund, which I can't do until i get the lexar to work appropriately. Please help

It's possible to get a defective stick, you should not have had to format it. You can only format in a Clie or a Sony camera, do not try to format with a PC.
Thanks alot. I tried to format it in the clie, however the clie keeps telling me to check the lock switch ( which is in the unlock position). Coincidntally, the clie shows a small key icon above the stick as if it is locked.

Best to see if you can get a replacement. Something is definitely wrong with it!
Thanks again. I called lexar and will be sending back. I appreciate the help

I have one too! i tested my lexar i dont know why but the original sony stick seems faster.. or maybe it could be the fact that my sony stick is 64 mb and my lexar is 128....

I suspect whoever did the chips may have a bad batch ... we've got a few original Sony memory sticks (8 meg Aibo 'programming' ones) that have the same problem ... anything you shove it into recons its write protected even if it isn't ...

Could be a driver compatibility prob.
I had a problem with my lexar 128 mb stick being read in my card reader and had to install a new driver from the manufacturer's site. Turns out there was a timing issue with the Dazzle Memory stick reader and the Lexar brand 128 MB memory stick.
Don't know if this applies to your situation, but it worked for me.
My 2 cents.

Never noticed any of those problems with my 3 Lexar 128mb sticks, I use 'm in my Clié, camera and usb stick reader.
Did you try putting the switch in the other position just to make sure? :)

I had a stick that would cause the clie to reset and when using transfer in the mp3 app it caused my pc to reboot. I formated it in a card reader and everything has been fine every since. I would give it a try before I go thru the headache of returning it.
Good Luck.

do not try to format with a PC. I have an 8Mb stick that came with my Mini-DV camcorder. When I recently put it in my NZ90, the Clie said it wasn't formatted. I put the stick in my USB reader and formatted it using the standard Windows format . It's worked fine ever since.

Very good, but it most cases with the larger sticks it doesn't work. I have had a long history with Palm devices and they can be very finicky. Even the new MS Pro has a downloadable MS Pro Formatter for PC's. When you format from a PC, there is usually something missing. Always had better results formatting in a Sony camera or the Clie. Some other the older Clie's came with a MS formater on the CD.
Sorry, I should have been a little more explicit. One other item is to put the MS in a card reader and use some kind of disk error checking app like Scandisk or Norton's Disk Doctor.
