Yes it does. You can tell since it shut off about a cm before the screen is completely shut.

Why would you want the screen on if you can't see it...
i.e. to drain the batteries while protecting the screen. The display is always the largest eater.
Also:
Is there a way to undergo the automatic screen rotation?

Not sure about the screen rotation, but I doubt there is a utlity to keep the screen on. Why would you want to drain the batteries?

Likewise, why would one need to run down and stress their expensive Lithium battery?
I know of no reason that any benefit would be derived from such?

I think your WiFi card can drain battery faster than the screen......

The screen takes alot of power at its highest settings...remember you can turn it down...Anyway i took the thing into my room ant turned off all the lights then whipped out my clie and closed it as slowly as i could and sure enough you can SEE THE LIGHT GO OFF!!! AMAZING...with the fridge...i may never know...

The screen goes off, but as you can see, the power button remains on...
I have a one to two month old NX. My battery life expactancy is under 5hours.
No prolonged use since then. The manual says to place the Clíé in the cradle when ever applicable- for prolonging the batterie life. I now doubt this is true! So I need to measure the exact batterie life. But not while recording or anything but while in standby.
BTW is there a "HALT" mode in the XScale processor like in NT derivates? Or is PALM working completely different from this?

I had to climb inside my fridge to check that the light does in fact switch off when the door is closed. But don't try this at home:)

The battery is not expensive. You can get an NX60/70 battery for about $50 http://www.cliebattery.com/ considering how long it last I wouldn't consider that terribly expensive.
A lot of NZ users reported longer battery times after fully discharging and fully charging a few cycles. Discharging fully doesn't really "stress" it or change the total number of charge cycles capable in the life of your device considerably. I don't recommend leaving it discharged though that would "stress" it. L-ions work better topped off. Better to leave them charged then uncharged.
