Hey gang,
I'm new to this forum - NICE SITE! I have had my NZ-90 for almost 2 months now and have already filled the internal memory. Does anybody have a list of the "non-critical" or factory installed unncesary files I might be able to remove from my internal memory to free up some space? A liting of where they located would be nice too.
Also, I have heard about "JackFlash." Can somebody tell me how this works and how much space I will need to installl it.
I'm getting tired of my MS-installed programs not working because I can't run them due to limited space on my internal.
Thanks!

Rob.
SOrry, I can't comment on Jack Flash as I have never used it. However, a popular programme / app is PowerRun ...
http://www.palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?sid=8BA7035E-9420-4FAE-B510C4ABBF37183F&prodID=15870
This is what I use ... best 15 US$ I ever paid! I have most of my programmes running from the memory stick.
Don't forget, though, that you can still install programmes directly to the memory stick when using the standard palm 'install' function on your PC ... as default, the programme / app will install to the internal memory but on the page that shows what programmes / apps will be installed on the next HotSync, there is an "Install To" button ... you can choose to installl directly to the MS.
Anyway, I have 8MB free on my internal memory and most stuff running from the MS.
Good luck.

I am a registered user of JackFlash... about 4 extra megs that run nice and fast, so I highly recommend it... I have put:
Netfront
Datebk5
Mapopolis
Jfile
in flash... saves a lot of ram... I use Launcher X to move everything else I can to a 256k MS Pro...
Plenty of ram left...

Hi there,
I use Y!Show launcher to run applications off the memory stick. You can run most applications off the memory stick including games except for ROM replacement applications. ROM replacement applications are like Agendus, SuperNames, Address Pro, TealPhone which replaces the main 4 programs ie. Address Book, Datebook, To Do and Memo Pad. I have around 3mb left on my NR70V.

Greg Hi Greg. I just installed another Skyscape product and have about 127 k left on my internal memory, and some of my apps in my MS will not open. I have about 14 huge nursing applications, and parts of all them have to be in the internal memory. If I download Jack Flash or Power Run will I be able to put them somewhere so that I have more internal space? According to palmgear.com, it does not look like Jack Flash will work in the NZ.

Nick Nick -- as I told Greg, I have about 14 nursing apps from Skyscape, plus Pepid RN. They each take up over 3 mb, some over 5 mb. They are installed directly into my Memory stick, but then parts of them automatically go to the internal memory. They are taking up most of my internal memory. There are some things that will not run from the memory stick. With Power Run, will some of those things run from the MS? I am down to 120k in my internal, (and cannot run some of the things in my MS because of lack of internal space), and don't want to give anything up.

as i said in my post, i have a nz, use the new jackflash, which is in beta, but no problems at all... you have to purchase it to get the beta that works on the nz... you get about 4 extra megs... so you can do the math of what will fit.... and yes, you used up all your internal memory and lots of things will not run...
sounds like you need extra memory, but without having experience with your applications, cannot tell how else to optimize your machine...

Yes, you despartely need to free up some RAM first :)!
PowerRun will run your apps and the db's from the memory stick.
It copies the files from the memory stick to RAM and runs them, one caveat is the loading times will be a lot longer to transfer the files to RAM.
When you exit a program, it will move the apps and db's back to the memory stick, plus it will save any updates. It will also create shortcuts in RAM that allow Hot Syncing.
Every app you move, has to be done through PowerRun. So some of the apps that are on your memory stick now will have to be moved back to RAM temporarily. This is so PowerRun can move and track them, plus create the proper shortcuts in RAM.
Since you have so little RAM left currently, it may take some maneuvering to accomplish the task at hand.
Hope this helps some :)!

greg Do you know if there is a trial version? I found the web site for the new beta version, but it doesn't look like there is a trial version. The updated version is not on palmgear.com.

There is no trial version, there is a test version, but that will only tell you how much flash you can use.

i don't know why i am having so much trouble being understood here...
the ONLY version that will WORk on the nz must be purchased... no trial version... if you can use the extra 4 megs, buy it... it works, and have heard no negative reports...
you don't get to try it for free...
once the app is in flash, and it works, then it's there until you remove it... flash works fine for apps that work from flash most do... it's like the apps that are there after a hard reset...
if you are using all the ram you have, 4 extra megs will not totally solve your problem... but it should help

Hope this helps some :)! Yes, it does, thanks. I have some things that I can delete temporarily that will be easy to put back in. I had 2 mb of space until I put my newest Skyscape product in tonight. Skyscape products normally don't take more than 500k of internal memory, and usually less, so I was really surprised that this takes up 1363k, but it is free, and has info about SARS, chemical and bioterrorist threats, etc. I hate to give it up. Some of my Skyscape products, I don't use very often, so longer load up time shouldn't be a problem. I will look at Power Run again, and then decide what to do. I think that might be what I am looking for.

Just a note and caution, if you decide to use JackFlash, do NOT install any databases in Flash ROM that are NOT read only. In normal operation, anything in Flash ROM is read only, just so your aware and you don't crash your Clie. Your best solution will probably be the use of both JackFlash and PowerRun. That will give you the most flexibility all around.

i probably did not state explicitly that i have a nz in that post, but this is not my first post on the forum, and to you!

I know you have an NZ, so I am puzzled by your statement?
I know some other medical people and a lot of their apps are predominately large databases.
I made a suggestion for the person's understanding and I'll leave it at that.

The readme that came with PowerRun specifically says that applications on the memory stick will NOT hotsync, and I have messages in my hotsync log that bear that out. What did you do to get the program to hotsync your apps?

Greg,
I am sorry, I wasn't sure, since your post was right after mine. No problem, I was just a bit confused, that's all :)!
Ha-ha, that's funny in one aspect, but sad in another. Amateur radio has been kept such a secret, even though it has helped so many in public service. Today's younger generation seem to have no clue about anything, except maybe for video games... :D!

It works for me :)! The readme says it does not backup the application or it's data, but not that it can't sync apps that require it.
True it doesn't work on all apps. PowerRun creates a short cut to the app with the apps creator ID. When the Hot Sync Manager is initiated, the first thing it looks for is matching creator ID's. If it doesn't see them, then they are ignored, otherwise a path is provided to the app itself. LauncherX is similar, but there it's called stubs.
All I do is let PowerRun move the apps from RAM to the memory stick. For example, it works great using Splash Money to update Quicken or RepliGo on the desktop PC. For some reason though, List Pro is one that fails to sync.

Thanks, I must have an unfortunate quantity of apps that won't hotsync after being moved with PowerRun.

greg Is the sarcasm really necessary? I thought you had th NZ. The reason I questioned it is because when I went to palmgear.com, the only JackFlash version they have is not NZ compatible,so I was confused as to how you could use it if you were using it in your NZ. Meanwhile, I found another thread with the url for the beta version, and figured out that is what you are using in your NZ.

so you want to backup your apps that are now on the memory stick?
where will you back them up to? the memory stick? sounds redundant.
Maybe a little philosophy:
1. most important thing to back up is your data... other than the "big 4" apps, be sure any other program you use has a hotsync conduit to back up it's data.
2. The next most important thing (in my opinion) is to recover from a complete lockup, something requiring a hard reset. My advice is to do a full backup each day. Just do it when the unit is sitting for a couple of minutes.
3. The last priority (IMO) is to backup stuff on the memory cards you have, in the small chance you booger the file system on them. I copy the contents of the card every so often to my pc.
I have had PDA's since the first Pilot, and was using handheld computers since the late 70's. As you might guess, I have NEVER lost my data!

Ok.. maybe I'm missing something here and I'm sorry if somebody indeed did answer this in the post since I didn't see it. But his first question was "does anybody have a list of the non-critical factory installed unecessary files... "
If you're going to *use* the beta jackflash (and how you get to use it on the NZ has been thourughly discussed already.. :) ) you kinda need to have some idea of *what* to remove.
I too have thought about using the jackflash program to free up some space, but I don't have the balls to try it w/o having some idea of what's safe to remove.
Enough folks in the NZ forum seem to have done this, so can't somebody post a list of what they've removed w/no problems?
That would be of great help to folks like me who are nervous at using the jackflash program.
Thank you and if I by some odd chance offended anybody I apologize in advance... :) :)

-chris Hi Chris! You have made some good points. We really got off the subject of the original question. I asked the question in another thread probably a few weeks ago if any of the factory installed apps can be removed, and was told that it cannot be done. (I don't use Photo Stand, or Clie Album, and would like to get rid of them.) I cannot tell you what thread that was. I, like you am also afraid to try Jack Flash, for the same reasons you state. I think that it is a real shame that you feel like you have to apologise in advance because you think you may have offended someone. I have considered leaving the forum for that very reason, but there is so much good information in this forum, that I think I will stick it out for a while. I have gotten some pretty testy answers that have made me feel really stupid. Have a good day.

Dorianne and others,
Just to explain, the only reason why I apologized in advance is because I've learned over the years chatting online that it's *really* hard to say stuff and expect folks will interpret it in the way you intended. I try hard to make sure folks can and that's why I always lace my posts with smilie faces... :)
I personally love this site and have never been offended by anyone and I hope nobody's been bothered by anything I've said.
The bottom line is life is too short to let something somebody says here get to you. I live my life in a way so that I'm happy all the time... and if I get upset/stressed/annoyed .... well, I can't very well be happy can I? :) So that's why I don't get bothered by anybody. It's just not worth it. :)
All that being said, let's chat about some clie hardware!!!! :)

what? that was sarcasm? you have misinterpreted or are overly sensitive. There is no sarcasm in the statements.
The first statement is to be sure I understand what was asked.
The second was to try to ask where the backup was expected to go.
I wanted to be sure that my suggestions were going to address the problem.
Then I gave the guy the benefit of several years of experience with what has worked for me.
Sarcasm? Not in post, only in yours. By the way, posting as unregistered is really cowardly.

Good deal, understand...
Yes, I can get a bit testy when the same question is asked over and over, and no one searches first, or worse, the answer is in the first page of the thread, and a newbie jumps to the end.
I can get a bit testy when people take a thread, and change it entirely, or start asking about a game program, etc.
I, like everyone else, am not perfect. But when someone gets testy, or sounds testy, we should all take a deep breath first, and let it ride a bit.
So, I'm guilty sometimes too, but I'm trying to be better. I hope everyone can make the effort, and we can forgive the occasional "violation".

The only thing I can tell you about your original question, is that you cannot remove any of the factory installed apps. My biggest problem is that I have too many large nursing apps. Most of them go on the memory sticks, but part of every one of the apps goes in internal memory, so I am out of my Internal Memory too. Good luck.

Jackflash user on NZ. You can remove NO Sony programs. That would require "JAcksprat" which Brayder says will not happen for OS5.
Flash works flawlessly on my NZ. I have the accursed Netfront and Picsel jammed in there. I had approx. 3.4 megs of available flash ram. Others have reported similiar on their US NZ's as well.
No experience with Powerrun, though I'm tempted...

You can't equate lack of knowledge as being stupid. Since you are in the medical field I believe, you know it's a lot easier to communicate with another person who knows the same techno speak. You took the time to learn how to be on the same level. Some things you can give simple answers too that another knowledgeable person would easily understand. To a layperson, you can't describe complicated medical procedures in just a few words and then expect them to be proficient at it. Like anything else, some stuff like computers also have a learning curve. A neophyte to computers can't be educated in just a few short words to do them justice. It takes time, study, and experience to get proficient. Another example is WiFi, I had no clue as to what was involved. I then started doing some research to get up to steam on the techno speak and learn as much I could through the web until I had somewhat of a basic understanding. Now I have enough knowledge to literally be dangerous :)!
This is NOT intended to be a criticism, only another point of view. Additionally, when an individual gets frustrated and upset, things all to easily can get magnified out of proportion. When a pointed question is asked, there usually is a reason so one can make a determination. No different than when a doctor or nurse ask questions of a patient. They try to get to the bottom of the problem so a proper rememdy can be suggested.
I hope this clears up any misconceptions and explains why people sometimes react the way the do. He-he, sometimes sarcasm is intended, for whatever the reason. I have found here in Cliesource, that when I attempted some humor, it was taken way to seriously and at other times when I was serious, it was taken as a joke.
Bottom line, sometimes you just can't win :D!

Does this mean that apps that need to synch with conduits can be moved and run with PowerRUN without any problems. I think I read somwhere that apps that synch with a desktop conduit NEED to be stored ONLY in RAM and not on the MS.
Thanks.

I was a little skeptical on buying a product (JackFlash) which wouldn't work on my new NZ. Kind of hard to fork out $20 for an application which, on PalmGear.com, doesn't even work on my handheld. I went ahead and purchased it anyway... and was given immediate access to the new BETA for the NZ.
I'll have to agree with the other posters here in this thread that it works GREAT!. I only have had one issue with JackFlash as of yet. I did try and move my PalmReader to JackFlash and it kinda 'hung'. I had to do a soft-reset and there was a copy up in flash and a copy in RAM still. I removed the flash one, and just moved that to the MS with PowerRun. That was the ONLY Glitch I've come across.
JackFlash is very nice in the fact you can move applications in and out of flash at will. If you decide you want to put something else in flash and don't have enough room left in flash... you can move something out.. and then the application you want back in.
The current Applications I have moved into flas are as follows:
AcidImage - 287k
DateBk5 - 587k
HanDBase3 - 474k
IconMgr - 110k
Kinu-maru - 68k
RepliGo - 363k
ScreenShot - 33k
ScrShot - 62k
WaClock - 137k
Wondersilk - 36k
ZLauncher - 313k
Wonderful program!!!!!!!!! I can't say enough about JackFlash. Works GREAT. Well worth the $20
On a second note...... There may be applications you have installed on your NZ which you don't need and could be removed. If you don't use the Picsel Viewer .... you can remove that application (Document Viewing Program). NetFront is another HUGE program you can get rid of if you don't use it and it is installed on your handheld (It is a web-browser which takes over 2mb).

Questions regarding apps.... and syncing.....
I don't know that there is a huge deal with syncing. I haven't had any problems syncing. Many times the APPLICATION is moved but not the underlying databases it needs to write data to. Anything which needs to be written to needs should reside in normal ram.
As in my previous post... I moved ZLauncher to my FLASH area, however all the ZLAUNCHER databases reside in normal RAM and can be read/written-to when ZLauncher needs to. As someone stated early on in this post... DON'T MOVE DATABASE FILES to FLASH unless they are READ-ONLY! this is critical to remember.
I moved DateBk5 to my FLASH... and it runs fine... because the date-book database it uses resides in regular RAM. This is no different than any of the pre-installed SONY apps like DateBook, AddressBook, Memo, and ToDo. the Application themselves are in Flash... but any data is written to in regular internal RAM.
I Haven't come across any issues with SYNCing and Conduits.
I have also moved apps like HanDBase to flash which works great. No problems syncing whatsoever. It syncs the data... not the actual application which usually doesn't change at all. :)
