Is NV Memory Worth It? With all the problems people are having with NV memory, I got to wondering if anyone has anything good to say about it?

I'd say it's worth it in the sense that all the new machines are using it so, unless you're satisfied with an older device it comes with the territory. But, there are work arounds for many of the problems and I think having a newer machine outweighs having to jump through some hoops, at least for me. Hopefully Palm will come up with some patches or improvements and future devices (if there are any that aren't dumb phones) will be better.

Not having all my data lost if my battery dies keeps me using my TX way longer than I would have trusted from a previous device.

Is NV Memory Worth It?

Short answer: "no" with a "if"
Long answer: "yes" with an "but

That should be "an 'if'" and "a 'but'" (sorry I work in QA, can't help it :p)

I have nothing bad to say about it. At first there were a few incompatibilities that I needed to sort out, but I am better off software wise because of them.

If your wife throws her's in her purse unprotected so it gets turned on all the time and runs it dead constantly... YES.

Saves you a lot of time restoring it. Too bad mine still has a TT. :(

NV memory is worth it. Can't say the same for old applications that haven't been updated in eons. More cache with NV memory wuold be ideal.

I don't have a TX, but my perspective comes from having owned both a TE and a TE2 (the latter with NVFS, most other specs being comparable). Personally, I'm good about backing up and hotsyncing frequently, so data loss is not as much of a concern. If I had my choice, I'd go back to a TE, it was much more stable. Hopefully newer NVFS models are designed to avoid the cache problems (=crash problems).

NVFS is good for converged devices (ie treos), that is why Palm have embraced this architecture......no wirries about losing all your info (contacts etc) while on the road - change the battery with no worries etc etc..almost irrelevant in my experienxce for pdas, I have never run out of juice - ever!

Isn't the 650 a NVFS device?

I think it's certainly worth it, but again I haven't had an issues with NVRAM. The big selling point to me is the fact that when my battery dies everything doesn't go away. So in my book it's certainly worth it.

I agree. When I had my (non-NVFS) Sony TJ-25, I was not really happy to have to restore a card backup every time I (or classmates) ran down the battery. Having NVFS makes backups on cards slightly less important (but still highly recommended), and now there is a point in using entry-level devices without card slots (e.g. Z22). I haven't really had many problems due to NVFS on my TX, but I think that the PalmOS can be optimised to use it in a more effective manner. I shouldn't have to load the entire program into RAM to work with it. A PC does not do that either. Still, I think it's worth it.
