View Full Version : Better recovery from hard reset

I had another spontaneous hard reset yesterday at an inopportune moment. I was at the gym, ready to listen to my MP3s, when I found that my Clié had lost everything.
I use a 512 MB Memory Stick Pro, so I couldn't access the stick to do a restore (I have daily BackupMan backups) right then, but I do keep a relatively current backup on a regular 128 MB Memory Stick which I didn't have with me at that moment.
Even with the 128 MB stick, it cannot restore two files, the patched "AVX MP3Decoder" (which I need for some of my MP3s) and the WL100 driver. I've fixed the problem with the WL100 driver by putting it into flash with JackFlash, but whenever I tried to move the "AVX MP3Decoder", I get an error requiring me to reset the Clié.
So, to fix this, I found that I could take the SYSUPDATEPACKNX_US.PRC file and instead of doing a normal hotsync, I put it onto the memory stick. Then, after a hard reset, I can run it from the memory stick and it properly installs all the appropriate patches. A quick soft reset later, and my "AVX MP3Decoder" is all set with the current version and my MP3s aren't all garbled.
I suspect that I could do this trick of putting future Sony patches/drivers (like the upcoming improved Memory Stick Pro driver) onto my memory stick so that I could install them after a hard reset without needing to do a hotsync.

Yep, that's what you have to do, I keep the Patch and WL100 in my Palm folder. Backups don't restore them.
You'll have to find out what is causing the sudden hard resets.
You should add or post it to the tips forum :)!

For me, whenever I do a full recovery after a hard-reset is always from the MS backup itself (on a regular MS). I find it much more simpler that way, everything is exactly the same as I last backed it up, without the hesitation of re-installing the patches.
As with the MS Pro, I do the same, backing up on a regular MS, when I hard-reset, simply recover from the regular MS, so that the MS Pro driver would already be loaded. Saving much more time for me at least, rather than having to do the updates manually everytime. In fact, I've never done a recovery with Hotsync yet, always been with the Clie's backup recovery.
I guess I prefer to have the Clie more like a stand alone PDA. So I wouldn't have to turn to my PC when my Clie crashes (in certain cases such as when I am somewhere else far away from my PC at home). The infomation on the PC is just another backup alternative for me. I rely on my Clie for my flight schedules and must have it backup running at instant. :D

I have used MS backup to restore after a hard reset several times this week. All drivers and updates were re-installed no prob. One time I had to go into POwerRUn and relist the shortcuts but other than that, no prob!

Question, if you have to manually add updates, drivers, and patches, how is Backupman faster during a restore?

I think the MS Pro driver has been released : did you install it ? Or are you expecting an even newer version ?
I am interested in your experience with MS pro : how is the MS pro performance, transfer rate wise? Is it faster to transfer MP3 (or any other data) on MS Pro than on regular ones ? 512 mb allows about 10 x CD worse of MP3. means lots of data...

The Asian driver was released, but didn't work on others outside that market. Sony says speed will approx the same with the driver as the other MS's are. Native devices should be a lot faster with the MS Pro and not needing the driver.

Yes, the installation files. Two of the actual files ("AVX MP3Decoder" and "CFWL100Neti"), couldn't be restored with BackupMan.
It's possible that MS Backup would work better, but it keeps getting an error that requires me to push the reset button on the back when I try to do a full (hard reset) restore, so I cannot seem to use it for some reason.

They released a "system update pack" patch that includes MS Pro support, but I suspect that it's preliminary because the online description for it doesn't mention MS Pro at all.

I haven't noticed any significant difference from my regular memory stick.
