The Wii??? (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12515895/)
Bad choice IMHO. But alas, a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. :)

Why!!! Yeah, that name is lame, which is even better, since Nintendo and its lame-named console are about to change/push the industry forward once again. :) I thought X360 was lame, well Nintendo just topped that.

At least the name isn't pronounced like why, instead it's like we weee.

I think it's a genius marketing move. No one is going to forget that name. I did like the "N5" name logo mockup someone made, though.
Does anyone remember the controversy over the stupid name "playstation" or "dreamcast"?

It dfeinately stired a reaction with lots of peeps. :)
I don't reacall controversy over PC or DC thing.
The DS got lots of criticisim for its name and of course its esttetics, but all that matters, is that's a great game machine. I trust Nintendo these days, so I'll buy a Wii, or whatever else they might have thought about calling it. It's the only game console I look forward to owning.

A good product should always be able to overcome a bad name, and I suspect this will be the case for the Wii. But, from what little I can remember from my marketing classes in college, I do know that it’s never a good thing if people aren’t sure how to pronounce your name. (We or Why?) And it probably doesn’t help that Intel has just introduced their new Viiv (pronounced “Vive”) technology. The double ii thing is becoming popular for some reason. A controversial name just for the sake of marketing does not automatically translate into sales. (Exception: Yahoo)
Here is (http://www.igorinternational.com/press/rmn-wii-gaming-console-name-game.php) an interesting read on the name.
I especially agree with the following quote:
“But Manning says that Wii doesn't really convey any of those things, adding that it's a bad sign when a company starts explaining its brand name.
"The biggest key to figuring out it's a bad name is when they explain it," he said. "You don't have to explain a good name; you have to explain a bad name."
