Sound seems to be one of the most wanted thing :)

The big problem is sync sound with animation, beacause games run slower than on real games, but i'll try :)

Really, not having sound is a bummer. I don't care about the gui or much of anything else, but having sound makes the games funner to play. I'll only play for about 3 minutes and then turn it off. If there was sound it would make it so much more enjoyable, and so many people would be willing to donate.

the big problem is that Clie only support 4bit 8khz sounds and scumm use 16bit 11 or 22khz, so must convert on the fly

Sound isnt important at all at a PDA game, cause most of the time its turned off anyway. And at some ressource intensive software like ScummVM sound also means that everything else would be slowed down. So sound is surly some neat adition for a PC game, but for ScummVM its nice but not essential (cause turned off most of the time anyway - or who is willing to explain to his underground sitting neighbour that this is the them of Monkey Island 2 ;) ? ).

Speak for yourself ONLY zork, I and many others want sound. That's when I'll be happy with scummvm. You are the VERY FEW who don't care about sound. Why don't you ask the majority of people instead of thinking that your word is the only word of the scummvm community.

Zork, if you are happy wiht the way that it is, then that be you, not very many people are happy with the way that it is.

Who ever wants to see whatever happen with the devopment of this program should speak here, and hopefully it will happen.

deadlyfoez, u r sure bout bein part of the majority ;) . But here its 7 out of 18. So thats not really a majority.
But bout sound : You arent realizing that ScummVM will gettin sound, but its not really essential. Cause the Clie like any PDA is most often used in public. And I like to see you sitting in office playing Monkey2 with sound turned on :) . Or at the underground while you sitting neighbour thinks bout painfuls ways of killing you after hearing for half an hour the same tune over and over again ;) . Or any other public place. So sound is some neat addition for the few times when you play at home (where you could play it on PC too anyway), but you obviously didnt thought bout the consequences of that feature :) .
Conclusion : For most users out there sound is surely welcome (includes me too indeed), but most times another feature is far more important : To turn it off ;) . Also to accelerate ScummVM, cause sound will slow it down a little.

You ever hear of headphones? Also, there are plenty of us that play games in places other than in public. These games really need sound.

Zork, just shut up. You have no clue of what you are talking about. I don't work in an office or anything like that. I bought my nx70v for fun, not for work.

If you don't want sound, then fine, you don't care about it, but, once again, I and many others do care about sound. SOUND IS WHAT WILL MAKE THE GAME ENJOYABLE TO US.

I can't enjoy the game in utter silence. I only now will play for about 2 minutes then turn it off.

So let me goet this through your head Zork. I, and I mean me and only me, and I don't mean you, I will only like it when there is sound.

And yes 7 out of 18 is a majority if 7 is the highest number on the poll for anyone one option.

I will play my games wherever I want, home, work, on the road, or late night in bed. I HAVE HEADPHONES. So I could even hear sound at a concert if I wanted.

Zork, stop trying to think that your opinion is what everyone else thinks. Cause really, if you have read all the threads about scummvm, you will see that MANY people want sound. So don't you dare sit there and try to tell me that something doesn't matter to me, when I think that it does. You don't know me or anyone else here. You cannot read our minds. So speak for yourself unless you have something to back you up. I have something to back up what I am saying, thats why I started this poll. And the poll says, again, for the last time, maybe this will get through to you, PEOPLE WANT SOUND.

deadlyfoez

OK. Zork. You win on one thing. I just looked up "majority" in the dictionary. The dictionary says the definition: "the greater number or amount; a number or amount greater than half"

So does your pride feel better now? That you finally got to be right at something? Good, cause thats the only thing you are right on.

So maybe "majority" ain't the correct word, but you know I mean. More people voted for sound more than any other happy.

I hope this made your day, your soundless, apathetic, day.

deadlyfoez, stupid one. Read my posting or simply shut up. I said its a neat addition, but not essential at all. So if you are really stuborn enough to miss all the puzzles and fun cause of your fanatism, then you miss the whole point what adventures are about.
And its now even 14 with other preferences then sound.
And this doesnt mean that they dont want sound, as i mentioned in my posting im one of them. But they realize that the majority has other preferences and realize also that PDA users arent GameBoy users ! Means that most times we have to turn sound off (as funny as iMuse themes are sometimes).

***EDITTED FOR CRY-BABIES***

Hey, Zork, On my nx70v, under where it says "cliè" on the cover, it also says "personal entertainment organizer".

I don't care if you want sound or not. For ME, ME, ME, (is it getting through to you yet that I'm talking about my personal desires and not everyone elses) ME to be entertained by it, I need sound otherwise it is boring to me.

I lose interest very fast if there is no sound, along with the crashing of scummvm on my machine everyother minute.

Yeah of course there is still puzzles and all that cool stuff, but I get bored before I even get to that part of the games. It's not as entertaining, and I won't care to fully play a game through until there is sound

Zork, Why do you keep insisting that you think you're right

Go play your games and have fun.

See Zork. I'm sure you've seen this thread http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1494

can't you see that people don't want to have to go without sound. Almost everyone is requesting sound, almost to the point that some people don't want it until it does have sound.

What really is important about SOUND in any LucasArts games:
The Sound is such an important thing in these games. For example Samnmax: I don't know any other game until today with a better music score. So that makes a really huge different to play it with the groovy music or without it. Samnmax without music is much like sex without touching, you know what I mean ;-). Or look at DOTT. I really miss something when I am playing without sound.
In my opinion is the missing sound the BIGGEST disadvantage of the whole ScummVM Palm project.
For me it will only be a complete success with sound ! Sorry about that and maybe it's hard but Lucas-Games without sound are only half worth it. So I keep my fingers crossed and kudos to Chrilith for his hard work to make it happen.

Ok now, i need help with sound and how to make a custom silkscreen area on hi-res+ device.

thanx

deadlyfoez, you are a little too fanatic on that topic. Read the requests there and you see that compatibility is more requested. And nope, sound isnt essential for LucasArts adventures (its kewl, but not essential). Not that i dont like iMuse, but the first Scumm adventures didnt even used iMuse at all and were the biggest succeses of them all. So you really not going to play amazing adventures classics like Maniac Mansion (whenever ScummVM will support it) only cause of "Hey, there is no sound .... boring"?
If thats your opinion then Zap2016 or Bump Attack is surely some better choice for you (both games offer amazing digitized sound effects).

So sound is neat and chrilith already mentioned that hes working on sound implementation (and he does some amazing job tryin to do so, cause ScummVM already is some miracle on a 33 MHz CISC CPU - beside that you find this masterpiece boring). But there are other features requested by more users (like for example comptibility with the supported games and comptiblity with Non Clie HiRes devices).

And what I would suggest to Chrilith : A "Sound off" option which gives most resources back which the realtime 8 bit-16bit converter will take away. Then sound wouldnt be any prob for anyone (all the sound fanatics didnt realize that sound will mean a slowdown and ScummVM already isnt that fast with "newer" LucasArts/Lucasfilm Games adventures).

Zork

yavin, sound at the Lucasfilm Games/LucasArts adventures was kewl (I still remember the Monkey theme when I first played it on the Amiga), but sound isnt that essential for Lucasfilm Games/LucasArts adventures. BTW At SamNMax I think you dont mean the iMuse sounds but instead the digitized music pieces. And that wont fit on your memory stick at all (not before MS Pro).

So yep, sound is kewl, but its not even near 50 % of the fun of adventures. Its at best at 10 % of the complete package (most adventures at that time didnt had sound at all (or even graphx like the Infocom ones ;) ) and were amazing fun or suspense to play).

With sam n max. I got it on a cd (isn't that the only way to get it). And there was, I believe, 5 audio tracks aside from the 1 data track. (I think that was what you were just talking about in your last post Zork)

I have not a clue of what iMuse is.

But I try playing the scummvm games now. I play late at night while laying in bed. The silence makes me go to sleep very fast. If there was sound (and less fatal errors), I would be able to play it more and stay awake longer.

I miss the sound in these games. It enhances the game play by so much.

I don't play anygames that don't support sound and hires. I paid $600 for a nx70v, I want the full potential of it or it aint worth my time.

Zork, just amuse me and agree that sound would be kick@ss.

Zork

deadlyfoez, i fully understand that you want HiRes and sound. Since I got my T625 I also search mainly for HiRes and enhanced sound games. But there are amazing classics like Lemonade Tycoon, Sim City, Race Fever, Liberty (the GameBoy emulation) or Zap2016 (which only offers enanced sound) and i still use them beside that they arent supporting the better graphx nor the better sound.
A game isnt just sound and graphx. Especially not on a device which only offers 320 * 320 pixels (or in your case 480 * 320) with 16 bit color depth and some antique sound processor ;) .
So support for the HiRes and enhanced sound is great, but it shouldnt be the only parameter for playing games ;) .

Very true.

I don't tend to play games on my clie to often. So I don't need a real lot. I've got Billiards and ScummVM and thats it. So when I've got time to play when I'm not near my computer (cause computers have a hell of a lot better games) or late at night I want to play something with a good expierence. I guess I'm just a power user.

I really only want something thats worth my precious 11 mb of free space. Right now I've only got 2.3 megs free.

MS's are great, but after ScummVm games, there isn't much space left there either

Speaking of books I read 4-16 books a month and since I have had a handheld most of them have been read as ebooks.

I love them as well. I don't view them as a replacement for my physical books, but as a supplement. It is nice to have many (about 60 now) bucks on my T2. When I travel or am stuck waiting, I can pull a book out and read. Also, I can read after my wife has asked for the lights to be turned off.

Sometime I will have both the physical and ebook running at the same time. That is rare as I hate buying twice, but on book I can get for free ( baen library , guttenberg, etc), it is nice to have both formats.

I own 274 ebooks (I started buying them in late '99) and I've read over 200 of them. I haven't picked up a paper book in a long time.

Over 10 - I love eBooks!!

I was a bit lost after I took part in the poll and read the first 2 pages of the thread. I tot I was at the wrong thread (a bug on 1src?!)

Anyway, at first, I thought I've read 5 - 10 ebooks. Those I downloaded from Memoware. I've downloaded more than 30 ebooks but only managed to read around 5 - 10 so far. But then I remember the plucker ebooks (mostly Chinese novels from millionbooks.com) I created. ;)
