View Full Version : Memory Stick Speeds

Has anybody else used the CardSpeed utility (www.audiost.com (http://www.audiost.com))?

I have a Genuine Sony 64MB MS, and a Lexar 128MB MS.  I ran R/W tests on both Memory Sticks, and was shocked that the Lexar benchmarked better than 2x faster than the Sony!  I would have thought that the Sony card would have run circles around the Lexar...

Any other experiences?  Does the program even report correct information?

Doubt it is accurate, All my memory sticks seem to access at the same rate, if one is slightly faster I wouldn't notice it.

Well, to me it "seems" like the access times are about the same too. But then again, if it took 1 second instead of 2 seconds to load a document, who would notice that difference anyway?

The tests this program performs take a minute or so. In that context, 1 minute, as opposed to 30 seconds, is very noticeable!

Any other folks try the program and/or have numbers to report?

My Lexar 128 MS completes the test in 22.16 seconds. It reports:
15 bytes/sec on 32bit write test,
24730 bytes/sec on 8kb write test, and
304818 bytes/sec on 8kb read test.

I don't have my Sony card here right now, but I remember it completed the test in something like 54 seconds.

Hi,

I have the SJ-33. I just ran the speed test on my SanDisk 128MB MS, and these are my results:

My SanDisk completes the test in 9.64 seconds. It reports:
36 bytes/sec on 32bit write test,
56741 bytes/sec on 8kb write test, and
546133 bytes/sec on 8kb read test.

I ran this test on an empty MS, and repeated the test with identical results.

Does anyone know how much throughput is needed to watch a movie off the MS?

Looks like the program is not at all accurate, considering Rmagar ran the test both with a loaded and unloaded memory stick If I am reading his post correctly.

Mastervec--

Yep, I ran the test on the memory stick when it was empty and when it had only 8MB free. Apparently 8MB was enough for the program to run its test. To be honest I didn't really expect there to be too much of a difference between the two tests. In fact I ran each of the two tests twice--all with the same results. Perhaps it is too consistent?? Anyway, my MS just crapped out (I'm assuming its the MS an not my CLIE), so I can't comment anymore until I replace it. It died mid-song while i was listening to MP3's and now my CLIE no longer recognizes it as being inserted. This surprised me since I don't remember reading anything negative about SanDisk's quality in these forums. Oh well, luckily its only 2 days old, so I should be able to get a replacement fairly easily.

Your Sandisk numbers are just about half of mine in each test. That makes sense, since my SJ20 runs at half the speed of your SJ33.

VFSMark Results for my SJ30:

File Create: 32%
File Delete: 20%
File Write: 10%
File Read: 27%
File Seek: 18%
DB Export: 31%
DB Import: 26%
Record Access: 27%
Resource Access: 29%

VFSMark: 24

Awful read scores make the final score low! It's a newly purchased Sandisk 128 Mb. Never heard any bad news about Sandisk, so this might be a isolated faulty item. Gotta hit me. :(

My results with a new Lexmark 2x128 Stick on my SJ-33 are:

VFSMark Results

File Create: 81%
File Delete: 56%
File Write: 27%
File Read: 135%
File Seek: 153%
DB Export: 76%
DB Import: 125%
Record Access: 135%
Resource Access: 132%

VFSMark: 102

So yes, looks like somethings wrong.

My Lexar 128 MS results are as follows;

VFSMark Results

File Create: 32%
File Delete: 19%
File Write: 10%
File Read: 72%
File Seek: 48%
DB Export: 27%
DB Import: 39%
Record Access: 54%
Resource Access: 49%

VFSMark: 38

That's on an SJ20, w/ 16MHz processor.

I'll have to run VFSMark on my 64MB Sony MS now...
