In this week's podcast we cover some of the latest software updates being discussed on 1SRC.com, including UnCache and NVBackup. MobileRead has a new tutorial on how to get started with Sunrise XP, and I talk a little bit about more Palm Treo rumors than you can shake a stick at. Thank you for the app review, this podcast was much more enjoyable with real information I can use today. As for your question as to whether or not a new Treo release is a new palm device. Yawn!.

Cell Phones <> Palm Devices.

Palm is trying to compete in a market where devices get released faster than consumers can consume them, it doesn't matter what OS phones run, when was the last time palm released a new device... I can't remember.

I can't try the new cell phones because I'm not willing to switch cell providers every other month.

Treos will always look the same, the insides and OS version will just change. Eventually people will get tired of the same looking device over and over.

Alan, you didn't talk about my new free software BlazFront :(. LOL Its cool. Just messing with ya. Just check it out anyway. A link is in my signature.

I can agree with both of your view points about cell phones vs. PDAs. I've been holding on to my T5 and LifeDrive and not really using my Treo 600 for much more that calendarding (which I don't use on my T5 or LD) and contacts (caller id is really cool). At the same time, you have to admit that PDAs are falling out of vogue. Look at all the companies who are no longer making them. People seem to be either moving to smartphones, have lost interest in digital organizers, or maybe just simply want a flip cell phone and forget all of these silly little toys. My wife falls into that category. Why take the time to "write" stuff down into a PDA or a smartphone when I can scribble a note down on a post-it(tm) note in a fraction of the time? After showing someone all of the beneficial features of a digital organizer and it still doesn't seem like a good fit for them, it's time to move on because they don't see a value from using it.

JA, I'll take a look at your new browers, BlazFront.

Not only Palm, but the PocketPC world is also a major YAWN these days. Neither side seems to be releasing anything new other than an occasional smartphone. As a matter of fact, browsing the HP site yesterday I saw where they no longer offer a VGA PPC. Hp, like Palm, has greatly reduced the number of their devices. I can't help but wonder if the new Origamis (Ultra-Mobile PCs) have something to do with that. At any rate, I was looking to upgrade from my bottom-of-the-line TE2 to something more useful, either Palm or PPC, but really don't see anything out their that peeks my interest. After a zillion years with 320x320or480 screens, I'm ready for a VGA, but I won't buy a Dell. (I can't stand Dell or his built-from-the -cheapest-crap computers and devices.) The LD and TX are too problematical and not well designed. HP had some great devices, but now they too offer only scaled down ones. :(

So, are we still going to have Podcasts 20 years from now long after Palm is dead and forgotten (he says sarcastically)? Take a clue from FDR: He gave great fireside chats to a nation willing to listen, but he gave them on an irregular basis and only one or two a year. In other words, instead of giving Podcasts every few days until we rebel, you should wait until you have something truly exciting and new to tell.

I actually look forward to the Podcasts. Something new did happen (pictures of the Hollywood and Treo 700p showed up). Although I find that news to be worthless to me, others (like Alan) like hearing that because they want to upgrade. Also, most news is reported via the Frontpage of 1src before the Podcast is released so hearing new things in a podcast are less than likely to happen unless its about software. The podcast has always been a way for me to hear what new software is out there or what new rumor is amongst us. I actually heard through the podcast that Resco makes great products so I went to Resco and got the Resco Explorer app. Never been happier. Its like a combination of CLIE Files + Palm Insider Pro + BackupMan. Really great app.

Palm is better than a Post-It because

a) Notepad is an electronic Post-It. Waste as many eletronic sheets as you want. There are specialized 3rd party Post-Its for Palm.
b) PIM on a Palm has alarms, you can change days, set repeat timers.
c) Entering text is fast with TextPlus. The data is archived eletronically and searchable.

Handhelds are better than smartphones because they have largers screens that are better for movies, games, suites and ebooks.

Handhelds are not going anywhere. They have a very bright future. Don`t let the popularity of the Treo fool you. And besides, a Treo is merely a handheld with a phone. The big debate is over choosing devices with more capacity, bigger screens, no keyb and no antenna.

I foresee a future were handheld lines will become more and more specialized for professionals, entertainment, etc. I see coming specialized handhelds for VoIP, for targeted environmental scans, GPS (already here), etc.

Helluva lot better than a Post-It.

The big unknow is WHICH company will have the creativity and the fire to keep producing high value robust sexy handhelds that keep drawing a following. Palm is an Fn dangereous game with its Windows venture. Colligan is scared that the Treo might become nothing more than a commodity; if he keeps selling out to Gates, Palm Inc. itself will become a commodity; and trust me, in the mass production game of commodities, there are some tough sharks out there to fend off (HP, Dell, Toshiba, Nokia, etc).
