In order to simplify my previous post, I'd like to ask a favor from those of you with an SL10 Clie:
If you have a USB mini-B cable please connect it to the small USB port on the lower left side of your SL10. Then connect the regular size USB (type A) to your computer and see if the battery indicator on your Clie reads full capacity (supposing your AAA batteries are drained a bit- otherwise you'd need to back up your data and remove the batteries to be sure).
I want to know if external power could be provided through that port. So far, I only know that the bottom universal connector could do that.
NOTE: In order to test this, you need a special cable that looks like the provided Sony Hotsync cable, except that it needs to have a charge capability. The one included in the package only has a Hotsync function. Below is a link of what is needed:

no it dosen't work. the USB can't power the clie
you'll have to buy an AC adaptor

Did you use a special "sync&charge" cable like I wrote, or did you use the basic "Hotsync only" cable that comes standard with the Clie SL10? If you were using the regular Sony hotsync cable, it won't work 'cuz the cable itself is not capable such a task... it's only for hotsync.
you'll have to buy an AC adaptor
Do you mean a USB-AC adaptor or an AC adaptor that lets you connect to the bottom universal connector (such as the one Sony sells)? If you mean a USB-AC adaptor, I don't think it will be much different. The computer's USB port should be able to power the Clie just as well a wall socket via AC adaptor would. The bottom port I know works.

Legohead - you have to get our point: the tiny USB port on the SL10 is not connected to the power supply/batteries whatsoever. You cannot charge your batteries no matter what type of cable you use for the mini-USB port on the side. Neither will any "charge cables" (which attach to the bottom of the SL10) charge your batteries - it will only provide immediate external AC power supply for your SL10 but will not divert electric current to charge your batteries.

Winstonw- where did you see me write that I'm trying to charge my AAA batteries? What I am trying to find out is if I can use AC power thru that port. This has nothing to do with my batteries! If you ever tried using AC power by attaching an AC adaptor to the bottom universal connector, you would have noticed that the battery indicator on your Clie reads full. This does not mean that the batteries were charged; it's just showing that "full power" is being given to the PDA- in this case thru AC power, NOT from the batteries.
Once again, I just want to know if external power- such as AC power via an AC adapter, or power from the host PC's USB port- can power the Clie (not the batteries!) using the Clie's mini side USB port. I already know that using an AC adapter or sync&charge USB cable attached to the bottom universal connector will power the Clie (once again, NOT the batteries!!).
A VERY PRACTICAL APPLICATION of this would be if you had a stowaway keyboard which is already using up your universal connector and did not want to waste your batteries while typing up a long paper at school. If you could get external power using that side port, you won't have to waste your batteries; rather you could just connect the cable I mentioned to a USB to AC adapter and plug it in.
So... all I want to know is if you have a sync&charge USB cable such as the one provided in this link: http://www.national-tech.com/popups...0um-02106bl.htm, and plug it into the side USB jack and the other end in your PC, if that can also power the PDA while it's plugged in(and again...NOT the batteries!!!). Another option would be if you had a USB to AC plug adapter and plugged it into the wall. Both approaches would tell us if it is possible to use external power using that side USB port.
Help would be appreciated!
