View Full Version : Mapopolis on TX?
I just bought Mapopolis because of the Agendus integration (the $34 yearly US version) and wanted any tips anyone can offer. How to make it run best, tips using the website, any info that would be helpful 'navigating' with the TX. I don't have GPS and don't plan to either. Thanks!

I just took Mapopolis for its first test drive on my TX today.
Up until now I have been using it on my T3. What I normally do is keep 2 local maps in RAM, and then if I am travelling further afield, load the map of my destination into RAM.
I did this today with my TX, and it got locked into an endless loop of error messages. I had to use the reset pin.
It seems that on the TX it can only keep a few maps in RAM because of lack of memory. I then used MemInfo to free up dbcache and it loaded fine.
Once loaded it ran as well as my T3.

I use it with no problems on my T|X, and much more easily than I did on my LifeDrive. All my maps are on the SD card, and (through the suggestion of Lamar at Mapopolis) I have created a hierarchy of folders with my maps, with most frequent ones stored in a subdirectory of my main map folder. That way, when I only need the frequent ones, the T|X doesn't have to scan all the maps and use up precious memory. {Prof. Jonathan}
I gave it 16MB or RAM via UDMH, and OC's it a bit with WarpSpeed. I don't notice much improvement from OC'ing so I'll likely change it back. But I have 5 maps in RAM without memory issues.
I do wish there was a way to add landmarks to the address book more easily. Some things like restaurants would be handy if you could get the phone number your into address book in one tap or so. I'm actually surprised the number of entries. My wife's favorite restaurant in SF's Chinatown is in there, though it is nearly 'Chinese only' (you do see a scared looking pair of tourists in there once in a while).

I've tried this, but it doesn't really work for me. I need to keep 2 local maps in Ram, because I am usually going from or to home. I also need to keep the Major route map loaded as well. Mapopolis' map management was just about acceptable on a T3, but is less so on a TX. It is badly in need of an update, in my opinion, but nothing seems to be happening on the Palm development front. There are a lot of disaffected Palm users :(

First, I recommend going to this official Mapopolis forum:
Official Mapopolis Forum (http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/default.asp?CAT_ID=5)
This forum is an excellent place to get information, support, suggestions, etc. The Mapopolis support team and developers participate. RIS is the developer and Lamar is the support guy. They are very nice and bend over backwards to answer your questions and listen to your comments.
Having said that, remember that RIS and Lamar do not make the business decisions for Mapopolis. They are nice folks, but the corporate powers at Mapopolis don't always listen to customer suggestions. They have a really good PocketPC version of Navigator. However, the Palm version of Navigator is not very good in comparison.
If you have no need for GPS, then you probably would have done a lot better buying Delorme Street Atlas 2006 HandHeld. At $40 it is quite the bargain for folks who simply want to look things up on maps. It isn't as good at GPS tracking as Mapopolis, but its maps are far superior looking. Mapopolis maps on the Palm Navigator look like they were drawn by kindergarten children using crayons when compared to SA2006HH maps.
But since you already bought Mapopolis, the NVFS file system of the TX and TE2 don't work well with Mapopolis. However, check out the forum link above to see how to work around these problems. The key is to run Mapopolis off of your SD card. I run it on my TE2 with GPS and don't have any issues, though it is a bit sluggish due to the TE2's slower processor. The TX should run a lot faster as its processors is 1.5 times as fast as the one in the TE2.
Good luck!
