View Full Version : Questions about NX video capabilities…

Okay, I was on here a while back asking questions about the NX. I actually put one on order, and then cancelled it. I started really questioning it when I realized I could have a Dell Axim for like $200ish, (versus $410) with a faster processor and double the RAM. So I’ve spent a couple of days researching those…and am pretty much realizing that they’re WAY more trouble than they’re worth (and I already know they don’t function as well as PDAs, just from an interface perspective).

Soooo, I’m kind of back to looking at the NX again. (My only real complaint-besides the price-is the lack of hardware buttons when in tablet mode, but I guess I can live with that). But since I’ve been researching PocketPCs, I’ve grown addicted to the idea of being able to play media, so I’d like some stuff clarified for me about its exact video capabilities. I guess I have a hard time believing it can really perform as well as a 400mhz/64MB PocketPC (although I also know a 16mhz Palm outperforms a 400mhz PocketPC as a PIM, so…)

The NX can play MPEG1 and a (proprietary?) format that takes less space, correct? Anything else?

You can just drag and drop MPEG1 onto the memory card, but it has to go into a specific folder, and the file has to be named a specific name for the video player to be able to recognize it, correct? Can you have more than one video clip saved on a memory card?

Can the included video player play media rotated sideways, to take better advantage of the screen?

What’s the highest resolution and frame rate the NX can manage? Can it realistically manage full screen (or close to it) at 15 and 30 frames/second with both MPEG1 and the built in format? Like 480x320 or 320x240 or something?

How much full screen, high quality video can a 128MB Memory Stick hold with that proprietary format?

And it looks like Sony just introduced a new, much better picture viewer, so that’s great! It would be cool to be able to take my memory sticks out of my camera and see them on my PDA :)

Anyway, thanks again…

Yes that is correct. Some have said that they have no problem playing MPEG4 vids as well. I'm not sure what format quicktime is but it can play those movies as well.

Yes and yes!!! Depending on size you can have many!!

Yes it can! There is a button that allows you to take a full screen/ wide screen type view, as well as capabilities to control certain functions of the player by the jog dial for one handed operation!!

I'm not too sure about that type of specifics but I do know that the movies I watch look pretty good!!!
