(Maybe a mod can sticky this.....
or we can just keep bumping it up)
I got a question!!!!!
Where can I get answers??
If you have a question... check out the past few days threads. Many times the exact question has been asked by someone already as close as this morning, but due to the popularity of the site a thread might be pushed to the next page so scroll down... and click the next page. Maybe if you feel daring enough you can even try a third or even a fourth page!!! :D
If you are unhappy with what you have seen try searching.. 1SRC HAS AN EXCELLENT SEARCH ENGINE!! (http://www.1src.com/forums/search.php?).... that's a link that you can click that will take you to the search page, fill in the keywords that you are wondering about...( example.. MUST HAVE APPS, or Wifi)... and check out that nifty drop box with all the forums in it, that will help you narrow down your search to your particular model or interest!!
If you aren't happy with the results maybe you can TRY GOOGLE!! (www.google.com)(that's a link too that will take you to guess where?? ;)) It might not be as specific after typing in a few keywords such as CLIE NX APPS., but it's worth a shot. Searching the forums will save you time more times than not anyway because you will get instant results as opposed to waiting for a response in the forums.
I know when I first got my Clie I found this site through Google!!! Then I read and did searches, (I was familiar with message boards from a previous website though) and got answers I needed at a time when most posters (not the wall kind ;)) were sucking their thumbs and wetting their sheets!! :p
Also, I know it's a drag but read your manual not just the quick start guide!!! :D
Aw man... what a drag !!
Yep it is!!! But it is well worth it... how else would you know where to look for your serial number?? ;;) Seriously though, there is so much good information found in the manual it is not even funny! Trust me you will learn a lot quicker and a lot more!! So read it, do it on the bowl but just don't drop it in, or wherever you want!!
BUT I WANT TO POST AND SEE MY NAME UP THERE!!!
Don't worry you will still have plenty questions as you install apps and other stuff!!!
Good Luck..and Enjoy Your Clie!!!

There is a forum for posting feedback, suggestions, and questions about the site. Anyone who has a concern with how the site is run or would like to see some changes should post them in the Comments/Suggest (http://www.cliesource.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?forumid=19) forum under the Site Specific category.

Maybe we need a sticky thread thats an FAQ. A place where the most common questions asked can be answered, with maybe links to larger threads that would provide more information. That would help the new people out a lot.

Thanks Chris , I must apologise for doing exactly the wrong thing there! Not searching made me post ANOTHER question on screen modes, so sorry for that everyone.
Fantastic site though, isn't it?

Sorry to ask a simple question, but where on the site is the option to register your details ?
Regards from a "Jerk" isn't that what some might call us?

Look at the top where it says "Register" (Profound, huh?).
It should be close to under the NR Series picture that lead to that forum.

Simon K. You should not have to apologize for your question. It is too bad that some people on this site are not a little more tolerant and kind. If they were face to face with people, they would think twice about how they state things!

The only time I object to an unregistered guest is if they are bashing someone else, and don't have the courage to show their screen name. If people don't want to answer repeat questions, they should just ignore them. Have a good day!

Chris, I hope you did not mean this the way I took it when I read it. In spite of your smiley faces, I got the impression that your comments were rather sarcastic. Sometimes the way we write things in forums, and emails is different that how we would speak to someone face to face. I don't think it is intentional. You could say the same thing to someone face to face, and they might not be offended because they can hear your voice tone, and see your body language. Sometimes it is a matter of people not having enough time to spend on the site, and they don't have a lot time for searching. I have to share my computer time, and don't have a lot of time for searching. The only thing I don't like about this site is that there are a lot of sarcastic and snide remarks made. I wish people would think before they type about how they would feel, if their comments were meant for them.

Too many people think they shouldn't have to search for answers, but they don't think about the people that spend time to answer questions. To many times, the same questions are asked day after day. I have to admit, I haven't spent that much time at ClieSource recently because it seems to be many of the posts are just the same questions that have been answered countless times.

I am new to this site, so please excuse my ignorance. I have registered but I am not able to start a new thread on a particular forum. I do not see anywhere on this site where this is explained.
I love the site but I am still working on purchasing my first CLIE and need some advice. I was not sure which forum to start with but it seems like it would help me in my quest to be able to start a new thread.
Any help would be appreciated.

top right hand corner of the pages all have the "new thread" button
Look, a decent tutorial page would make all the difference in the world. some of these "obvious" questions maybe should have been searched. but when one does, one comes up with lots of hits, but oblique references, lots of jargon, and sometimes outdated info! So the only real alternative is to put in one place a "how do I do this" step by step guide... takes about 10% more effort than writing a complete answer.
Who has the leadership qualities enough to make this happen?

It could also be that you never activated your account. You can click here (http://www.cliesource.com/forums/register.php?action=requestemail) to have the e-mail activation re-sent.

Also, answers to a number of the 'obvious' questions can be found in the FAQ (http://www.cliesource.com/forums/misc.php?s=&action=faq)
Orincarnia
11-06-2003, 01:39 PM
sothe FAQ is the tutorial page basically, so ZNB you got your tutorial page
one question...........where the heck is it? i've never had to use it before
well that is an obvious question that we should not answer. no just kidding.
A FAQ is great for quick questions like "how do I do a hard reset" which I was too embarassed to ask when I saw how some dumb questions get answered!
For something like "step by step in installing the PELACA hack for CF multimedia" this is too complicated for FAQ I guess...
PS there is a tutorial section at cliesource, but it is just about empty!

Okay, good job. It was the fact that I had not "acivated" my acount by clicking the URl in my e-mail that was preventing me from being able to start a thread.
I read the FAQ regarding "why you should register" but that was not explained at all. I read quite a bit of the FAQ and I did not see this explained anywhere.
But I did get an answer quickly here, so thank you to all who read and or replied to my question.

If we can get one person to write a step by step on certain topics and then have a sticky at the top of each forum with links to relevant topics we could save a lot of time. For example, in the general forum have a sticky at the top, in that sticky in the first post you post links to threads that explain stuff like:
A thread that explains simple answers to many problems(resets, certain software, things you'd expect a clie to do but it can't)
A thread that explains HOW to post, what info to include etc.
A thread that compares different models(maybe links to reviews, spec sheets)
A thread that explains general up keep(calibrating the digitizer etc.)
This would save a lot of time, and would be quite easy to set up. I would be willing to do a sticky in the nx forum including answers to the most often asked questions. Cheers, Ben
I would take a stepwise approach:
first do a poll on what people think are the most important topics like to choose from:
1. play video from MS
2. play video from cf
3. rip a dvd
4. play music from ms (not as simple as it seems if you dont know the folder location!)
5, play music from cf
there are some obvious ones like:
backup data to MS
recover from crash
hard reset
warm reset (what is this one?)
or even some crash recovery strategies, or other things.
We could make a forum for ideas, and the willing expert could take one on every once in a while.
then collate all the info in the forum... all the info is there as many have noted.
It would be very fast for those who know the topic well, and would take a long time for relative nwbie like myself...
but I can tell you that the one thing that has kept me buying Sony is the valuable info you get on cliesource, and all of you people's help! An NX is a powerful tool, but without some tutoring, it is just a bulky Palm V with pretty colors!!
IF you all agree, we can post this modest proposal in GENERAL or at the top of the NX forum for example. then we can get a good sounding board.
PS too bad N2ifp is not around anymore, having gone to cousin T3 territory, but this is just the method to distill someone's great knowledge...

Well copycat for some like me living in Japan we don`t have much choice If wanting to by a PDA. Sony outs sells palm T and other in their series 10 to 1. Prices are cheaper with sony PDA. I don`t want a PPC. So SOny is my only choice. :(

I have noticed over the years I've been visiting Cliesource (yes, I've had a couple of different screen names) that it seems to harbor the most folks who slam noobs or those who genuinely want answers to questions they may have truthfully searched for in the best way they knew how. Although that hatefulness irritates me to no end (I don't care how many times I answer the same question...I was new to a lot of things at one time or another), I still find Cliesource to be the best site around for Clie news, info and tips.
Just my 2 cents.

I used to have my homepage set at other PDA sites. Over the years, their forums have become wastelands filled with few threads that don't involve petty bickering or, in one case, total domination by a few unpleasant individuals.
When I discovered Cliesource, it was =so= different. You may find the occasional person who posts only to say, "RTFM!" but most people are anxious to help out. That is the reason why, compared to these other sites, Cliesource has the most active forums filled with highly participatory threads.

If you are unhappy with what you have seen try searching.. CLIESOUCE HAS AN EXCELLENT SEARCH ENGINE!! Mods - just wanted to point out, now that we are 1src that link should be changed to reflect the 1src forum search engine (http://www.1src.com/forums/search.php?) instead so as not to confuse new members, visitors, etc. Thanks.

Good point! Done
Sometimes it can be useful to have the same question asked a number of times. When the screen cable on my Psion 5mx broke I was able to prove to a small claims tribunal that this was a common problem with this unit due to the number of threads on this subject posted on message boards and the firm I had purchased it from 24 months earlier was ordered by the court to pay for the cost of repair. If I had not had this evidence it would not have been as easy to prove.

Dorianne. Chill out. I am a brand newbie here and Chris seemed to be making points clearly and frankly. Straight talk and to the point. I appreciated them. How you could possibly consider them sarcastic is beyond me. People need to be able to post without considering every possible sensitivity or they will give up posting. Reserve your concerns for posts that are unmistakeably rude and unnecessary.

Yes I would like to implement a sticky for TJ-37. It is probably the poor man's Clie with quite a few capabilities. Unfortunatel most TJ-37 users resign themselves to being unable to not use some of the functions and are afraid to ask for too much.
The first sticky I might try to make is the battery issue. Darn Sony and their tri-cross screwdriver. The first thing I would post is the latest battery offering and set up a loaning of the tricross screwdriver tool place.

Using search on forums is great feature, but always will be people who will post same questions making search as difficult as doing it "by hand", that's is why it will be a good thing, if forum will have some read-only topic where already answered questions will be categorized(and linked) per thread as it was written before.

There are still some members of 1src that continue to answer questions about Palm devices. Hopefully newbies will ignore the spam and other distractions and ask questions that they cannot find in the old posts or clarifications of answers that still puzzle them.
