Seems harsh, but Apple needs to cover their ***. Last thing they want is for that kid's mom to sue them 5 years down the road claiming that the Mickey Mouse special edition iPod was her daughter's idea and demand millions in damages. If she were to send in a script to any of her favorite TV shows, she would recieve much the same response.
for JHC's sake, apple dont do phone-in ideas. If they did , they would find themselves in court on a daily basis. They handled this kid's letter VERY badly and they should be ashamed, but c'mon, in this litiginous age (and I want to accuse the US of raising the stakes here) who can blame them..? Jeez, they might have written nice letter back and got sued for making inappropriate advances to a a minor....where does it all end??

My current employer and past employer does the same thing.
I do have to admit that someone should've looked at the age of the sender, but that's life. Really, there's w-a-a-a-a-y too much else to worry about.
BTW - ages ago I wrote to Apple's Legal Dept, as some bottom feeder (i.e. ambulance-chasing lawyer) had an ad in the local paper for a carpal tunnel/RSI injury lawsuit, and the mouse shown VERY clearly had an Apple logo on it. I received a very courteous e-mail thanking me for pointing this out.
