Battery problem

Hey, I just recently bought a Zire 71 to fool around with and I have the following problem: Whenver I connect the battery, it shuts off my PDA. If I don't put in a battery and connect it to the cradle or another power supplier via the bottom connector, it will start up and enter the digitizing screen. Within one second of inserting the battery into its connector, the screen will shut off and the processor will stop (noticed by the lack of humming. Then, when I remove the battery, the screen will come on again. As I keep the connector still attached, the screen is at the same stage as before I attached the battery. This means it does not clear RAM. Perhaps there is some interference between battery and connector?

I'm not too sure, but perhaps someone here would know? Thanks!

WHAT? interference between battery and connector? it is not a DATA line, just power.

I realize. I'm saying, would a screw-up in the circuitry redirect power from something? I'm not too keen on how PDA's work so excuse my rookieness. Anyways, if anyone has any useful tips or explanations, I'd be grateful. I don't want that $50 to just sit there.
