View Full Version : UX-50 charging problem after dropping

The other day I accidentally dropped my UX-50 to the floor for the first time. Since then it won't charge - the red charging light does not come on, and the battery icon on the left side of the screen does not indicate that it is being charged. I tried a soft reset, but that didn't help. I tried looking it up in the FAQ in the sticky, but that link doesn't work. Could a hard reset help, or did I break some part of the hardware when I dropped it?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

The same thing happened to mine. It fell on the floor and no charge light nor battery light. It wont even turn on. :( Will sony still repair these things?

Argh. That does not sound promising. I'll probably end up having to replace it with a QTEK 9000 or something...

I just checked sony and the repair will be $138USD. Thats almost how much I bought it for!

I just checked sony and the repair will be $138USD. Thats almost how much I bought it for!How about using this as an excuse to open the UX, check the area around the battery connection, disconnecting and reconnecting the battery. And hey, try the usb charging mod prior to the reconnection. The worst case scenario is the UX will not work again, which is the current status, but there is a chance of it working just by these simple measures, and by repairing any apparent loss of connection, which is the most probable cause. From the symptoms it is quite possible to be around the 4 pins pannel at the UX's base, where power is delivered to the UX, as it sounds that the rest of the functions are preserved, right? Why don't you try that and get some pictures for us here if you see something unusual? Again, there is nothing to loose at this point.

Another option, and I think it's quite viable, is to send it for a very small fee to Chris Short for assessment and estimate, if it is repairable, the cost would be a fraction of Sony's asking.

Good luck :o

True. I need the 5 star screwdriver. I tried a flat head but it did not work. I am sure it the battery and or connecttion. This is the second UX40 of mine to stop working in the past 2 weeks. :(

Try using the smallest flat you have (probably from a watch repair kit) and apply some vertical pressure while turning it. It has worked well for many here. I think it's worth the trial, and if you have a nonfunctional UX 40 why don't you start with it? :)

Ok I am going to go for it. With two UX's that have suffered this in two weeks is way too obivious. I know it has to be the battery. Why else would it not turn on nor charge after a fall or shake?

Will report back later. :D

Will report back later. :DCareful when taking apart the cover, a lead connects the cover speaker to the main board, also, I would immediately disconnect the battery (slowly) before doing anything else, as working, or even touching the mother board with the battery connected might cause damage.
Good luck again

Back with good news and bad news.

The bad first:

My brothers UX's screws wont budge, no matter how much verticle stregth I use. Trust me, strength is not an issue for me. ;) Also I dont want to chew the screws, so I am heading to lowes to check if they have anything I can use.

The good:

I fixed mine. I unscrewed everything and slid of the cover carefully and watched that speaker wire. I disconnected and reconnected the battery and pressed the power button. My CLIE asked me if I wanted to restore my backup. I said, "YES!"

So I know the same should go for my brothers.

See you soon. :D

Ok I skipped Lowes and searched for another screw driver and mustered up more courage and strength. I took me a long time to be careful but I successfully performed the same tasks on my brothers UX as I did to mine. His is now charging with the orange light too! So this is good, very good. Now I am thinking about getting a new battery for both. I am sure the current ones have been thru a lot. :D

Anyone know if the TH55 BATTERIES fit as a replacement UX battery internally of the UX?

No, it is too big. JA did a mod like this, and has a TH battery in his EB40 ;)
