This week we talk about who will be first to release the Treo 700p and when; ACCESS shows off ALP, but does anyone really care? And lastly I review ToySoft's mySchedule MLB 2006. [details (http://www.1src.com/?m=show&id=1508)]

Now that we know that Palm is working on their own flavor of a Linux based OS, the less I really care about what ACCESS is doing. It seems clear to me that what Palm wants to accomplish and that ACCESS is trying to accomplish are two entirely separate things. As such, they are building their own products to further their own goals. Unless something changes over the next year, I really don't expect ALP to have any significant role in the Palm economy.

I don't care whether ALP comes out with it first or Palm comes out with it, but having a Palm device that runs all or most of my old apps but has the power and multitasking of linux under the hood would be great.

I'm dreaming of an apache and perl port with SlimServer running on my palm.. I can now stream all my mp3 from my huge 100G SD card.. Ok, ok several years away but you get the idea.

I once read about a guy who was running a webserver on his Newton MessagePad with an ethernet PCMCIA card. Totally geeky, but the bag value is rather high. So if you can do it on a Newton, then I'm sure you'll be able to run Apache on a Linux Palm Powered device in the future.

I recall seeing a diagram of Palm OS on Linux that showed that you will have access to Linux outside of the Palm OS environment.

I did find this on the Palmsource Site:

http://www.palmsource.com/opensource/letter.html

In addition, Palm OS for Linux will be able to run many third party Linux applications and services (GUI applications will need to use the Palm OS APIs).

Looks promising as far as Apache goes.
