View Full Version : Zire 72: What 2GB SD Card should I get.

I am thinking about getting a 2GB SD card for my Palm Zire 72. According to Palm's website it should support it.
After looking around the question that comes to mind is how much to spend on speed. Is it worth spending the extra cash on say a 133x card (approx 19Mb/sec xfer rate) or would it just be lost on the 72?
Are there any specs on how fast the Zire 72 can transfer to the SD CARD?
Assuming it fits, I thought the Sandisk Ultra II SD card with built in USB connector would be cool. Its xfer rate is about 9Mb/Sec. Slightly better than my current card but I thought I good compromise to be able to transfer directly from the PC without a reader.
Finally, any opinion on cards advertising the "latest" power-saving technology. They suggest they help prolong battery life (an important feature, if it works) on devices.
Thanks for the input.

You probably want to avoid Sandisk as they have a habbit of corrupting files. However speed will only be an issue copying files from the PC to the card as the zire itself has a relatively slow card reader. I am not sure what to recommend but I would avoid Sandisk if you can help it. I know a lot of people with bad experience from there cards.

Thanks for the info! So while faster cards will work in the Zire it sounds like it isn't worth the extra money. Sort of like plugging a USB 2.0 Flash Drive into a 1.1 port....works, but sloooow!
Anyone have thoughts on power consumption on SD cards? Are some better than others for using less power? Would this also be a factor of the speed of the card (i.e. faster cards use more/less power)?

well i like faster cards myself. i have a 5.12 133x and a 1gig 50x and the 133x is faster but not break neck speed faster.
for me it is the price that matters

I've used SanDisk all my life (except for my 2GB Toshiba-developed PNY-branded SD card I got for $50 @ Newegg.com) and never got a corrupt file.
I personally think the speed thing is a ripoff if your not using your memory cards for professional less-than-a-second photography. I've used regular speed cards and never had a speed issue with them. I understand if it takes 10 secs to load something from the card but paying more for less than a second is ridiculous.

Well, faster speeds on USB transfers helps. Anyways, I use an Ultra II Sandisk 2GB and it's fine. Just keep in mind that 2GB=no writing.

Are you saying that if I use a 2GB card that it becomes READ ONLY? I couldn't write data to it like my 1GB card? Why would this be?

Well, I don't know about the Zire 72 because I've not ever owned that before, but with my prior experience, 2 GB cards cannot be written to because of formatting. I know that my T3 can't do it. Maybe the Zire 72 has that driver to recognize that formatting, but I doubt it. Anyone know for sure? That's why I'm buying a USB Sandisk Ultra II 1GB card with it.

Hi,
Paul from Palm here. Just to clarify, the Tungsten E2, T3, T2, T, Zire 71, 31, 21 all support expansion cards up to 1 GB. The Treo 650, 600, Tungsten T5, Zire 72 and LifeDrive will all support 2 GB cards.
Best

Well, I don't know what's going on with my T5, but it'll "spit out" my 2GB card. Just up and stops reading it. T5 also can't be used to play RifleSlugs. . . :(
