WiFi: How does one connect to hotspots?

O.K., now that I have my WL100 and fascinated by how I can surf through my wireless net at home, how do I take advantage of hotspots, like at Starbucks? I mean, do I just pull up in my car and if I'm within range it will connect? Do I need to actually be in Starbucks? What about settings? How do I do this?
