Hey out there,
I currently own a sony clie nr70v. I know, I know, time to upgrade...
Anyway, i am considering the clie TH55, because so far, every review i have read brags about the unit.
I have heard a rumor that the device supports GPS provided that one has the cradle for it...
Can anyone verify this fact for me? As this would definately make the TH55 more appealing.
Thanks

Thanks to all

It is called CC5 for car cradle. See my set up, screenshots and a product display image that I plucked from eBay Item number: 9706029008 (http://cgi.ebay.com/NEWSony-Sat-Nav-Cradle-GPS-Pega-CC5-peg-Th55_W0QQitemZ9706029008QQcategoryZ56166QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem), below. Do a search for it here or eBay.

That is awsome. Are there any Australian Maps? Or is there a generic Palm OS software for Aust maps?

As far as cradle, any newer series (T615 and newer) cradle would do. I'm using T615's UC600 (right) for my office and the latest c55 cradle (left) for TH and VZ series at home. I modified the UC600 for docking REAL stylus, not the toothpick one that comes with TH. ;)

Good luck searching for TH55! :)

Can't help you on that one, mate. Sorry! :(

If I were you, I would look for TH55/E1, European version with BlueTooth and Google for BlueTooth GPS. There are plenty of these type of GPS receivers with Australian maps that work with TH55/E1 BlueTooth.

yeah..if u have a th55 with bluetooth, you can simply buy a bluetooth GPS antenna and use the navi-program of your choice.
I use that setup. i have a th55/e2 with a BT GPS antenna which i bought for 45 euro's and i'm using it with tomtom5. Works great!

Do you see the red and white arrows in the bottom of my GPS screenshots, next to the Altitude? Those are the compass direction. Red arrow is pointing to the North.

How does GPS works? Hmm. That is a loaded question. Why don't you Google it. ;)
For a simple answer, there are several GPS satellites hoverring the world that can pinpoint your location coordinates (lattitude and longitude). The GPS receiver receives the coordinates and displays the location on the map.

I have the European type Clie and this GPS that communicates via bluetooth:

I use Mapopolis (Norh America maps, Europe available also). All work GREAT.

You could get a CLIE car charger/cable that has a serial port plug included. Then you can get a cable that connects to a GPS via serial port. I don't think the USB plug method will work with CLIES, but that might be worth a try as well. I believe that there are USB to serial adapters, too.

In this way you would be using the TH55/U and a cable connection to achieve GPS bliss. Bluetooth can inhale the batteries fast enough that you might want a car charger method anyway. I keep my Clie powered by the car, and run the GPS on it's battery.

I also have used Garmin eTrex Vista, non-BlueTooth, handheld GPS, with TH before CC5. You can get the connector for the eTrex to Clie from PC-Mobile (http://www.pc-mobile.net/guge.htm). You need a Palm OS mapping apps that reads NMEA signal from eTrex. I use StreetFinder for that.

Since Sony quit making CLIE, these CC5s are hard to get other than from eBay. That is how I got mine.

Go to eBay and look for Item number: 9706029008. The seller will ship from UK to Canada. The current bid is GBP 51.00. The CD may not include the Canadian map though. You may want to request Navman or RandMcNally for it.
