View Full Version : NX80V - busted camera?

I just today got an NX80V off auction (not eBay; I don't live in the States) and the camera appears to be broken.

A picture of it is here: http://homepage.mac.com/time_pilot/images/NX80V.jpg I tried it with the filter on and off, in a dark room and well-lit room. At one point I was almost able to get a semi-decent picture of myself before it lapsed again into total static like you see in the photo.

Before I contact the seller with a few choice words (who said the unit was working) I'm just double checking: this isn't because the battery isn't fully charged or because of some other easily fixable problem, right?

This has been an ocurring & known problem with all nx80v cameras. A fault with the sensor or cable. Happens usually after one year. No fix to it unless you purchase another camera unit altogether. If you do a search in this thread, you'll see almost all nx80v users have their cameras stopped working 'automatically'. Sony has refused to solve the problem. :(

Yes, camera failure is very common on the NX-80. I purchased two NX-80's on eBay as spare units; both had camera problems. Sending the units to Sony for repair is the only way I know to have the problem fixed, and is pretty expensive. I contacted the seller of the last NX I bought on eBay and told him the camera was not functioning. He was an honest guy and refunded me 10% of the purchase price. I felt this was reasonable since the remaining functions on the handheld worked just fine.

That really sucks. To me, not having a functioning camera ruins almost the whole experience  :(

I've emailed the seller, and we'll see what he says. This is Japan, he may just refund all my money since he didn't mention that the camera was broken.

I just bought a WL-100 WiFi card last night, too. That was unfortunate, although I've heard with a PCMCIA adapter it can be used in a regular laptop.

On the subject of the camera: is the repair a very involved one? Is is user-doable for the adventurous type?

Thanks to everyone for responding to fast! :)

Someone in this thread (http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=101930&page=2) opened the Clie and changed some parts. You may wanna venture into that area & let us know?

After much complaining, the seller has agreed to refund me 100% of my money.

I'm not satisfied though: I want an NX80V !!!!!!!!!

I've also started having this same camera problem w/in the last couple of months--every once in a while it will pop back to normal, then I lose it to static the next day.

I think I've found a way to kickstart it out of the static, and the method has been working fairly reliably the last week or so. The inspiration for this came from geste's comment that it's a sensor issue.

First, go to Clie camera mode, then tap the options button.
Swivel the camera so that it's pointing directly towards a bright light source.
Tap "Scene" then select "Slow Shutter"
Tap "Brightness" then bump it up to +2
Wait a second, then hit "Scene" again and select "Normal"
If the circumstances are similiar to the camera problem I'm having, then you should see the "preview" image under options go from a bright static to a plain bright field--point away from the light and the camera should be normal.

Sometimes it takes going through the routine a couple tries before it finally registers, but it's been consistently doing it for me. Granted it's not a complete fix--usually in the next couple of days the static comes back. But at least I can get the camera to work when I want it to. I'm not deep into the tech enough to know what exactly is going on; I only figure that you're causing the sensor to adjust (either due to the light or to switching modes) and it's waking the thing up.

If this ever stops working for me I'll have to remember to edit the post. Hopefully this works for some of you all.

Good luck!

Kevin

Let us know the repair cost. I just had my NX-80 completely overhauled by Sony - screen replacement and camera repair. Total cost was around $165. Considering how much I use it, I finally decided it was worth having it fixed.

Did you ever try taking a pic? It should work, it just won't have the preview.
