View Full Version : Love my new TX (more than my TH55)

After using the TX several days I can honestly say I like it more than my TH55. Here is what I like about it so far:
1) WIFI hotsyncing
2) Blazer web browser is so much faster than Netfront (maybe the TX is actually the faster piece here) - my web browsing speed has increase 3 fold over the TH55
3) I like the hard buttons on the front and the 5 way navigator
4) It is nice to have the side flip cover that you can fold behind the unit so it is completely out of your way.
5) Screen is great, even a stitch better than the TH55
6) I never minded the TH55 "toothpick" stylus, but I really do like a real sized one like you get with the TX.
7) It is great to have 100mg+ onboard memory.
8) Palm has kept their "keep it simple strategy" - no camera, no voice recorder, no buttons on the side and back - plain and simple, yet very powerful and all the tools you need to organize your personal and work life.
What don't I like:
1) this is not a dislike yet, but I heard a few people complain about the digitizer and I notice occassionally it won't recognize a "t" - I think it is more me than the unit - my TH55 occassionally misread my input too
All in all they are both great units, and I am surprised I am saying this, but I like the TX much more than I thought I would - I hope this continues.

Good to hear your positive review of the TX! And, Welcome to the TX family!!
One thing that I have noticed, my "toothpick" stylus seems to work a little better on the Palm, than the one supplied by Palm. I have noticed that the smaller the contact point is with the touch-screen, the less "noise" generated. Maybe you wouldn't mind trying that on your Palm as well to see if you get the same result...
The smaller the contact area, the easier it is to scratch the screen, though.

Agreed. Happened on my UX.

How can you leave your PDA naked? I don't use a PDA until I have a screen protector on it.
Palm even gives you the first one free!

TMNeilson,
I have had 5 PDA's and never used a screen protector. My screens have all been in excellent shape. The trouble with screen protectors is they take the fun out of using the PDA. The colors are not as vibrant and the sensitivity with the stylus is lessened a small degree.
I learned something a long time ago, which I was hesitant to try at first, and that is that waxing your screen every now and then with a non-abrassive automobile wax keeps it in great shape. And, as a bonus the stylus glides effortlessly over the screen. I have done this on all 5 PDA's and have been one happy camper because of it. BTW - I found "KIT" wax to be the best - it comes in a yellow can. You probably think this is a crazy idea, but it beats the hell out of the screen savers.
Oh, one last thing - before I write on my palm I always lightly swipe it on my shirt to get any particles off the screen and I to the same with my stylus.
Hope someone benefits from the above info. ;)

Hi tsinvest, this idea appeals to me; I agree with you that a screen protector, while good for the screen, takes away some of the enjoyment of using (and seeing) the pda. Could you elaborate a little on the technique you use to get the screen waxed? I assume you use a certain kind of cloth, also how much wax you use, how you apply it (do you put it on the screen or on the cloth?) Do you buff it afterwards, and how, how do you prevent wax from getting built up in the corners and seams etc. A lot of questions I know, but if you just run through your technique fairly thoroughly it should cover most of them. I hope you don't mind running through it for me (and others) as I think this might be the solution i'm looking for. I've never found a screen protector that's as good as the bare screen, many of them are MUCH worse, and I don't think I should have to pay exhorbitant prices for a tiny a piece of plastic that makes the pda less user friendly. I probably wouldn't mind if there was a company doing it right, but all the ones i've tried have been dissapointing in one way or another, and at the prices they charge it would cost half the price of the pda to try them all in the hope of finding a 'good' one, which probably doesn't exist. Sorry for the rant, it just pisses me off a little to pay $10-$20 for a 10 cent piece of plastic that then takes my screen quality down a couple of notches; Don't do me any favors!

I love your idea of using car wax! I have never tried that but what I use is silicone caulk. Smear a small amount on any plastic surface such as your PDA screen then wipe it off thoroughly with a cloth. Lasts a long time and is slick.

I can see how that would make it slick, but does it actually protect the screen from scratches?

What exact car wax do you use? Rather try yours then to try another brand that no one has tried.

Okay, here is my car wax technique:
1) Start with a new can of wax too make sure there isn't any grime or grit that could have gotten into it. (KIT wax is the best - yellow can)
2) Take a damp kleenex and clean your screen before you wax it.
3) Put a small amount of wax on the damp kleenex (could be the same one you used to clean your screen) and apply lightly over the entire screen - try not to get it on the blue TX casing - although not a big deal if you do. I generally leave about a 1/8th space on the screen between wax and case. Remember you don't press hard like you are waxing a car you put the wax on lightly and just a fairly thin coating.
4) Next let dry for about 2 minutes
5) Now take a clean Kleenex and wipe off the wax, using fresh areas of the Kleenex from time to time until the screen is shiney clean and smooth. Be careful not to get wax fragments on or near this buttons or D-rocker - you can hold the palm upside down with the buttons above the screen so the wax dust falls away from the buttons.
6) After the screen is clean I take a little electric shaver brush and clean the wax dust from between the screen and the case (which usually is very little)
7) Repeat in a few weeks or every month as necessary.
That's it in a nutshell - hope this helps - And, enjoy the best screen experience you have ever had. :)

JAmerican - It is the small can slightly to the front right of center in the picture posted in your post above - it has a yellow see through lid with a sponge applicator under the see through lid. Good luck!

I think that if I were to wax my TX, my Mustang would be jealous. I don't know when the last time I did it. Okay, truth is, the last time it got waxed, my wife paid for it at a local car wash...
It sounds interesting, but I think I'll stink to Screen Protectors. I've been using them for 10 years and am quite happy with the results. Hats off to ingenuity, though!!
One word of warning: Kleenex (and other facial tissue) is made out of wood pulp, and is thus highly abrasive (comparatively speaking). This also applies to paper towel and toilet tissue. MUCH better to use a chamois cloth or soft cotton cloth (such as is provided with lens cleaning kits, glasses cases, and palm screen protectors).
