I've read somewhere in Sony's web FAQs that Cliés can be charged using their USB cradles without an AC power supply connected (but it is obviously faster with the power supply).

Does this apply to the NX series & the supplied cradle? It doesn't seem to (i.e. no orange light on the Clié, or charging battery icon).

I do not know about the cradle but I got a HotSync/Charge cable from Brando that works like a charm. It is great when you travel.

Sorry, you need power to the cradle. Jag is correct, there are USB cables that can supply power from a USB powered hub.

Very interesting, thanks. I doubt that I would actually try this, for fear of frying my NX - but good to know that it is possible.

A translation of the text might tempt me...

ditto. I use my charge/sync cable at home and the cradle at work.

One question about the USB charger cables: do they charge only when the PC is running? (e.g. if one is connected to a PC which is switched off; or directly to a powered USB hub, will it continue to charge the Clié?).

If so, I'll order one from Brando right away. (I am very pleased with the PDAir case I ordered from Brando).

The USB port isn't "enabled" without the PC being turned on. The hotsync/charger cables are great; lightweight and fully functional. Good luck with your purchase!

If the powered hub doesn't turn off then yes it'll continue to charge the clie. Also, if the USB port on your PC can provide enough current when your PC is turned off then yes it'll charge even with the PC off (AFAIK some PCs do this, at least USB optical mice connected to them continue to glow even when the computer is 'softpowered' off).
