I have been using my NZ90 sporatically since getting it. Mostly due to the disappoinment of the battery when taking pictures.

The past few days I have used it more and have been charging it everynight.

My battery fluctuations when taking pictures has stopped completely. ( before I would take two or three pictures and the battery would drop to less than 35% and hence the flash was turned off. After a few minutes the battery level would go up to around 55-60 and the cycle would start again.)

Today I took a whole punch of pictures and the battery level rarely changed.

This fluctuation had been the one sore point with the NZ90. But if it continues to work like it did today I will be one happy camper.

if i'm right sony already know this problem before they even release this clie model. i think that's why they make this model to able to change it battery because the camera is going to take lots of juice from the batteries.

How many cycles do you have on your battery ? Check under battery and details. Mine's at 7 cycle and it still fluctuates whenever I launch the camera application.

I'm at 8 cycles.

21 cycles 98% charge and no back light on. I get 9hr 22min

I noticed also that when the NZ90 is not opened completely (the light measuring sensors are covered) that the battery drop more than when opened completely

ok... you folks posting, just to make sure... say if you've got the backlight on or not. since we all know that the battery times are *drastically* different with it off. :)

jlbunting - you've got some nice times... that backlight on?

"21 cycles 98% charge and no back light on. I get 9hr 22min"

If think if were going to compare the battery life we should all use no back light because if the back light were on there would be no way to determain if my 33% is the same as your 33%.

What light measuring sensors? Huh?

I had the same concern and was surprised to see that after some time the battery still kept a good level even after some pictures with flash. The problem was also the treshold for being allowed to take a picture (I think 40 percent of full of charge). So it was impossible to launch Clie Cam with a false level under 40 percent.

Now, all is OK. It seems the battery learns how to work properly after a couple of days and after some charging.

Well I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume that most people *USE* their backlight. The big thing that makes the NZ (and NX and NR too) so appealing is the screen quality and size. If you don't let yourself enjoy the color, what's the point?

You can't enjoy the beauty with the backlight off. That's why I assume most people use it.

I think I'm gonna start a new poll... :)

I will not lie, I use my back light all the time> but for the poll i figured it would be more accurate with my backlight off>

With my back light on the lowest setting, which is where I usualy keep it. I get about 7 hours.

I'm curious how long it took some of you to reach the number of cycles that you're up to. I've had my NZ-90 for one week exactly and I'm up to 8 cycles. I use the backlight at it's lowest setting, and I use the WiFi card quite a bit. It's charging right now so I'll post the time at 100% when it's done.

I don't know what would be considered normal in relation to cycles and length of ownership/use. Your thoughts?

13:14 @ 100%, backlight off
06:55 @ 100%, backlight on lowest setting

(no cards or MS in the unit)

Granted, this is a brand new unit, so I'm sure these numbers will change dramatically over the next few weeks/months.

Hi!

I am using energy dimmer v2.2beta4 (http://www.79bmedia.de) which improves battery management tremendously:
You can set up your own profile of when to turn your backlight down to 0 or a low percentage and when your unit shuts of completely...
As soon as you tap the screen anywhere, hit a hardbutton, or use the jog dial it switches back to your normal setting.
As an example: when I had my NZ on for three minutes, with the backlight on almost full it switches down to 10% after 15 secs of inactivity, but stays on for another 2 min and 45 secs...

cheers Nicolas

Is the battery on the NZ-90 supposed to be precharged like overnight initially to get its maximum capacity? Its like that for some handphones.

42 cycles/ No degradation
Backlight off- 9'52"
Backlight at lowest setting- 6'50"

If it sits overnight, it'll do about 30" better on the backlight at lowest setting

Second battery arrived last week and about the same numbers.

rules for lithium ion batteries: keep topped up, discharge as little as possible, battery will last longer.
i.e. put on charger whenever possible. NEVER fully discharge if at all possible.

If a Liion battery could give 50 cycles of 10 hours, then it can give more than 100 at 5 hours...

Please don't argue this one, look up on manufacturer's sites for battery charging info... this stuff is true

(full discharge myth applies to nicads and sometimes nimh, but also a bad idea in general)...

Greg

but why does Sony suggest to fully discharge and recharge for 12 h then?

Don't trust the manual.I mean what does Sony know??? They just make the product... :) They would want us to wreck our clie so we can buy a new one...

A bit of digression - after leaving my VAIO C1 unattended for months, the battery has fully discharged. Now, I can never get the battery to be usable for more than 30 minutes even after a full charge. So what Greg said is very true, don't fully discharge your lithium ion batteries!!
