Howdy folks,

I've had my NX-80 for about 2 years now, and it's a shame Sony got out of the PDA market. Best PDA ever. If you would put a 1.3 MP camera on the UX-50, I would have a dream PDA, though I must admit I've been tempted to the Dark Side by the Fujitsu-Siemens Loox 720. Still, I'm a loyal PalmOS afficionado.

Anyway, in recent times, I have noticed a problem with menu items on most all programs displaying corrupt characters... for instance, a drop-down menu will list odd chains of international characters, and the length will exceed the menu box. Sometimes, the menu item will be blank. The characters displayed change from time to time. Sometimes, they will restore to their original correct form. The positions of the items still map to the actual menu item, but I can't figure out what's what if there's no text visible.

Some programs will lock up when I open the menu, either from the graffiti area menu button, or the small bottom silkscreen button. Wordsmith is notorious for this. I can't access any menus from Wordsmith. Most all of my apps are affected by this bug, to varying degrees.

I tried a hard reset, and it does appear to clear the problem. I restored a full backup from the MS via BackupBuddyVFS, and the problem returns. A warm reset won't help... in fact, when I do a warm reset, I can't get to any of the programs aside from what I have mapped to the buttons. There is no graffiti area visible when I do a warm reset. I can't even get to the Sony launcher this way, as I get stuck in the Palm Preferences screen.

I suspect that a file somewhere got corrupted, and restoring the backup restores the corrupted file as well. I do have the keyboard driver onboard, but I've removed the game controller. I never used it, and the driver causes no end of problems. Can the JogDial Assist driver have something to do with this?

Anyone else have this problem? Thanks in advance.

Download that and tell me what apps you have installed :)

Two years is a good run without a clean reinstall. Restoring from your backup after a hard reset will reintroduce any problem you had prior to the hard reset. The backup contains the problem(s) causing the weird function you describe. Although painful and laborious, I recommend a hard reset and reinstallation of all your apps and data from scratch. Otherwise, you may likely spend a whole lot more energy, time and frustration trying to track down the cause. Now I just have to convince myself to do the same thing. Good luck.

Eh, I don't think it' in any of my programs. I did a hard reset, and the problem still shows up. Any clues?

No, a hard reset won't take care of the problem.

Based on what you say here, I would definitely agree that the solution to your problem is likely a hard reset, then manually re-installing your apps. Before you re-install, rename the Backup file on your computer, otherwise hotsyncing could re-introduce the corrupt files.

You will likely find that this fixes your problem, and gives you extra space on your PDA. Good luck!
