View Full Version : Any DateBK5 user? Need advise.
I am new to DateBK5 and need some help from experienced users here.
When I create a new appointment using PalmOS default "Calender" applicatiion, I am able to insert the "location" in the "details" dialog box for that particular event. Such way, I can briefly see the location of the event when I tap on the day in "Week view".
When using DateBK5, creating a new event, I coud not locate the place/option for me to input the location of the event.
Can anyone advise me? I'm using version V-5.4a, s5.
Thank you.

This is available in Datebk6 now in beta testing. Hop over to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pimlicodatebk/ where there is intense discussion of the beta release.
Thanks for the link to yahoogroup.

hherbzilla,
Thanks for the screenshot. They look nice :) .
I went through the datebk5 yahoogroup but couldn't find anything about location field in DB5. Does this means it is not available in db5? Funny thing is that if I enter location field using the PalmOS "Calender", I do see it in DB5. But I just couldn't find a way to enter it in DB5.

Yes, location is read-only in Datebk5. You cannot enter it in Datebk5.

I've been using DB6 with my TH55 and don't see a "location field" anywhere. Is this something that is available only on newer Palm devices? If not, what is the exact key sequence to get to this field because I just don't see it...

To enter a location, choose your event ---> click on details ---> in the details a bullseye in the middle of the screen (next to the Private checkbox). Tap the field next to the bullseye (default is "none") and enter your location.
Hope that helps.

No bullseye showing up on my TH55... I guess it's part of the newer Palm OS's... Thanks anyway... :(

I can't imagine this is a device specific and not software specific option. You did have Datebk6 -- right. Anyway, here is a screen shot of my datebk6 with the location "bullseye"

Just found this in the documentation... Apparently it is device dependent. See below:
Location & Birthday Fields
DateBk6 now displays both the Location field and the birthday field on newer PalmOne devices which feature the proprietary PIM apps and databases. The Birthday information is stored in the Contacts database and is pulled automatically by Datebk6 in a manner similar to how the built-in application handles it. There is a special birthday index database that DateBk6 and the built-in calendar app actually uses (scanning the contacts database would of course be far too slow) to get the birthday information. Unfortunately due to some bugs in the contacts application, this database can get corrupted. However, Datebk6 includes a feature to automatically rebuild this database should that ever happen, making recovery much simpler.
There is a new preference panel for the Birthday Setting which allows you to select a default icon and font/color for birthday items. Birthday items always appear as the very first item on each day. You can tap on the item to get to a properties dialog which then allows you to change the birthday and advance alarm on the item.
There is a special meta-tag that you can put into the Note field of a contact so that DateBk6 will display a different name for the birthday. The tag is: <BirthdayName=xyz> where 'xyz' is the name you want displayed in DateBk6. Note that the tag is case-sensitive, but can be entered anywhere in the note field of the contact. Use this for example, to only display a Spouse's name, or someone's nickname rather than their formal name.
The location field is now an editable field in Datebk6. If an item has a location, a target icon (blue concentric circles) is displayed at the end of the line. You can tap this icon to bring up the location contents in an editable field. A similar icon now appears in the Details dialog and brings up this same dialog. This has the advantage of displaying very long location field contents (which the built-in application never displays). As in DateBk5, a tap on the description field will display the contents of the location field for a few seconds on the top line. To see all the locations for all events in a day, switch to the list view which displays them after the description for all items.

It's device dependent because the newer Palm devices (T3 and later) have updated proprietary databases instead of the classic Palmsource databases that all other devices had (eg. Clie's, etc.). So, that's why it's a device specific feature. It's a limitation of the device/OS of older, non-Palm(One) devices. CESD isn't going to create a whole new database for older devices as that would just break compatibility/syncing with the native apps/conduits. (It's pretty much the same reason why, even though you may have a new version of Palm Desktop, you still can't sync categories with it on older and non-Palm(One) devices (although you can sync categories with Outlook if you use PocketMirror).)

Thanks applejosh. It made sense to me today -- but this weekend I couldn't fathom it. Maybe I should put down the glass of wine when I am reading the forums ;)

Either that or double up on the wine. (I'm sometimes amazed at how I can more easily grasp certain things when I'm slightly loopy.)
