Hey guys, I've searched the forums about this and found one topic on it, not so helpful, and it was dealing with the NR series. Well, on my NX70V... I have the same problem, when I move my jog dial UP... it clicks pretty loudly, move jog dial DOWN... no noise at all. Just smooth scrolling. Has anyone else experienced this with the NX series? Any quick easy fixes? Or should I just return? (I want what I paid for =P) Thanks in advance!

I get that as well ... I'd say its normal ... these rachet mechanisms are often hinged on one side so they 'give' a little more in one direction than the other ... I wouldn't worry too much :D

I get the same noise in either direction, up or down. When in ZLauncher, I don't get any noise at all.

I have smooth scrolling up and down, no sound at all
how would a launcher affect the sound of a scrollwheel n2ifp ?

Ask ZZTech, the developer, because I don't know, sorry.

n2ifp, I think he's talking about the mechanical noise the roller itself makes (as in the noise it'd make even when the Clie is turned off).

I didn't think of that and he didn't specify mechanical. In any case, my makes the same noise up or down with the unit off, it's not that loud and yes I can feel it too.
BTW, with the unit off, ZLauncher has no bearing on the noise :D!

Yeah, that's completeley normal. Plus, the noise will become less and less evident the more you use your jog wheel.

Same noise up or down; it was disparate for a while, until a little piece of something-or-other fell out from behind the Jog Dial

you can get rid of that sound if you go to preferences, then go to general, then click on system sound. turn it off.

Haha, yeah, sorry I forgot to mention that it's a mechanical noise  . But ok, so... so far it seems normal. Anymore confirmations would be appreciated. Thanks for your replies guys!

ssssss, well... for my... only after about 5 days of use, it started to click. When I moved the jog dial up or down when I first recieved it, it made no noise at all. But about 5 days later, it just all of a sudden started to click when I move the jog dial up, but no noise down. I've only had my NX70V for about 2 weeks, let's hope you're right about it disappearing. Thanks.

Okay, so you haven't fully abused your unit yet, only half way :D!

Well, I've been sitting around turning the jog dial up rapidly and constantly for a while a few times, hoping it will go away... but it doesn't. If I leave the PDA alone for half a day (OMG!!)... and use the jog dial again, no noise... until like... maybe 1 minutes of UPWARDS use... noise comes right back hard and strong =/. Maybe more breaking in will do.

257 views and only about 10 answers? Wow... we got a lot of lurkers without NX's ;-). Common guys, please help me decide if I should get a replacement before my 30 days are over. Do you get mechanical jog dial noise when you use it? Simple yes or no =D. This'll be my last time begging, I may be anooying people  . Thanks for you time!!

*shrug* you've had 4 people say yes definately now ... how many more do you want? The jog dials on all the sony things I've looked at (a couple of different Clies and 3 Vaios) all click and they all click slightly differently in one direction than the other ... its just a factor of how they're built ...

Hey, sorry if I've annoyed anyone with all this :D . But 5 out of say 250(Assuming they all own one) is not a great ratio. And I payed half a K for this thing... so maybe I'm a perfectionist, but I want what I paid for, specially something that costs that much.

Actually, 5 replies out of 250 is a pretty decent ratio ... look at the ratio of answers per views in other threads.
Remember, a lot of people just don't have time to reply to every message ... and generally when one reads a thread like this one and sees the number of replies its already had, then it isn't really worth adding another unless it is really very different to the ones already mentioned. Thats the way these things work ... it generally isn't considered polite to post a pile of "me too"'s to a list.

Yeah, I understand... but I am asking for repeated answers... not quite repeated opinions. Maybe I should've made this a poll.

I think if you just want to have a yes or no answer, just put up a poll, it will be more effective this way.
anyway, I have the same thing as you, have noice when scrolling up, but pretty quite when scrolling down. but i can make it so that it will produce a louder noice when scolling down too~~~

well if you're paranoid, look at http://www.pspilot.de/pppnx70/pppnx70.html ... scroll down to about 2/3 the way down where he's got the jog dial thing taken apart ... I can't quite see it but I think that yellow thing sticking out of the black thing that the jog dial is attached to is the actual rachet mechanism ... note that if you project rays from the centre of both the dial and the rachet to the point where they meet, the rays meet slightly higher than the centre-to-centre line ... it is conceivable that as you rotate the knob down (so the knob moves up past the rachet) that rachet gets pushed up and out as the teeth on the dial slip past. When you move the jog dial up (so the teeth move down past that rachet) the rachet is pushed to the right and down ... if that rachet is hinged in line with its centre then it is reasonable to think that this would be slightly stiffer, hence the louder noise.
Of course, I can't see for sure in that picture so I could be completely wrong but if it puts your mind to rest, there you go :D
Either way though I really wouldn't worry, there are many other things in this world to worry about than something which, really, has no impact on the way you use the thing. And judging by those photos, even if something broke in that region which is causing your problem, I can't see how it could cause any OTHER problem anyway.
Oh and yes, you are probably right, a poll would probably be the best way of soliciting opinions of this sort from many people ... :D
Cheers!

Don't return for something silly like the jog dial sound. My old NX60 had that same thing...it is just the nature of the mechanism and it will go away eventually (most likely). Besides...the only time you hear it is probably when you are trying to notice it by now. In normal use, are you going to be paying attention to how the jog dial sounds?

Hey guys, I've searched the forums about this and found one topic on it, not so helpful, and it was dealing with the NR seriesThat was probably my post.
Maybe more breaking in will do.This is exactly the behavior of my Jog Dial even the part about the noise disappearing after not using it for half a day and then coming back after some use.
I'll tell you what has happened to my unit since January. It still makes the clicking noise and breaking-in did nothing to solve it. I even purchased another NR70 but that replacement had a jog dial that would rub against the case. So that one went back immediately.
I still have the original NR70 and the noise is still there and hasn't changed. The only difference is that now I don't scroll up as much as in the beginning and the noise doesn't bother me as much as in the beginning.
I too feel that if you are going to spend your money then you should get a well-manufactured *NEW* product. The way to solve your dilemma is to consider how much the noise bothers you vs. the hassle in doing a return and the possibility that the next unit will be the same or worse. Just decide quickly as you can't change your mind after 30 days and the noise will not go away on it's own. It sounds like the noise bothers you quite a bit so the decision should be easy.

My NX70 Jogwheel does not make any sound. Yours must be a defective device. I would try to return it.

I guess it depends on what you mean by 'defective'. My impression of these things is that the scrollwheel should give you tactile feedback so you can feel each time it clicks over a new line, much like those Microsoft scrollwheel mice (and not like certain others such as A4tech which are designed to not have the tactile feedback). If that is the case then if your scrollwheel is smootly scrolling then your unit would probably be defective (the rachet inside is probably broken or bent). On the flipside however, if the scrollwheel is making excessive noise then perhaps that rachet is too tight in which case again it is 'defective' ...
The other thing is people are posting 'mine makes the sound', 'mine doesn't make the sound' and the like ... perhaps we should also make mention of what we're actually listening for ... after all, if it is giving ANY tactile feedback (anything apart from scrolling smoothly such that you can't feel it when you move the wheel) then it must be making SOME noise at some point ... my scrollwheel makes rather loud clicking noises if I just flick it to turn it but if I put my thumb against it and turn it, the sound becomes rather hard to hear scrolling down ... scrolling up it is easier to hear but is still quieter than the tapping sounds the Clie speaker makes when you've got those sounds turned on ...

Raybot, I know what you are getting at. Jog dials do make noise but my experience is the same as ldbobby in that it did not *loudly* click when I purchased but then developed later. The volume of the clicking in my unit is loud enough to bother other people in the library. Scrolling down also makes a noise but much quieter. My NR developed loud clicking after about 2 weeks. ldbobby's NX got loud after 5 days.ssssss, well... for my... only after about 5 days of use, it started to click. It is definitely not the normal 'tactile' click that you get from jog dials and scroll wheels.

I guess thats the problem ... its so hard describing these things ... how about people who have the problem could use the inbuilt sound recorder to record a short (1-2 second) sample of the scrollwheel clicking so we could have a listen? (I know it'd sound different recorded with the inbuilt microphone compared to listening as a user but then those of us who think we've got 'proper' sounding ones could also record similar ones as well with the inbuilt microphone and compare the difference) ...
I'll do the same once I get back home (I only have net access at work but then I can't sync my Clie, when I'm at home I can sync my Clie but I've got no net access!) ...

Thanks for all your help guys! Really appreciate all the responses. Well, my noise was loud enough to annoy me and others arround me. And I could feel the click when I moved up also. Well, about 2 weeks later, when I scrolled down, it made a similiar noise, just not as lound. That was when I decided to exchange mine. Very easy since Amazon.com sends out a replacement before I send mine back =D. Yeah... but I can't let you guys know if the new one will click too because I've decided to just return it and wait for the newer NX's to be released. Then decide which I want then. (I've read that some people believe that the CF slot will be removed =O... that's not good... so we'll see). But thanks for all the responses, much appreciated!
