Does anybody know of anything I can do to get my VZ to recognize the CF card. It just gives me a "?" over the icon. It knows something is there but reguses to acknowledge it. If I put the CF card in and come back about 10hr later, it's all good. If I take it out or attempt to install the english packs and do the softreset, it brings back the "?". Any advice? The NX crowd dealt with these issues. Just in case, what's the info on that guy who fixes PDA's, he fixed Dragons's UX somewhat?

Yes. Install Data Export from the CD that came with the VZ90. After you connect the VZ90 and get it to recognize the CF drive, reinstall Data Export using your English Clie CD.

I have a mac so I have never used data export. I also have never been able, even when it worked, to get the CF to be recognized by my computer in the VZ. I'm not sure what your talking about, it sounds like it makes sense, can you help me figure this out. Except for the CF slot it been working fine but... A big reason for the purchase was the CF slot, otherwise I would just keep using another big screened clie like my TH or NX or just get the Lifedrive. As you can see, I really want the CF drive to start working. Thanks guys.

Hope, are you sure it's not the CF card itself. I had the same problem with my memory stick slot. I thought it was the VZ-90 but suspected it may have been copy "Sony" Memory Sticks from China and I was right. I've since purchased Sandisk memory sticks (1 & 2GB) and everything's good in the world. Just a thought...

Well, if you say it works before the English Installs, then... ;)
Or, did you have the Compact Flash card in when you pulled the battery? :o

Good point Seymore, I hadn't thought of CF card issue. Once I had a problem where one of my memory sticks stopped being recognized as a MS that I could save data to. I was a new PDA user and I suspect that it was because I removed the memory stick while it was being recognized or read. Clie files didn't recognize it, but another data manager that I had on my Clie had an option to format cards. I formatted it and was then able to use it. You might want to try it, before you give up on the CF card.

CF card was in when I pulled the battery. What would that have done? I have a 2gb Kingston and a 32mb Lexar and both work fine in my NX. I even formated the 2gb in my NX just in case and still nothing in the VZ. But, it did recognize the CF card 3 times over the past week. So, I'm not sure if its hardware or software but I want to cover all bases. Prior to not turning on at all completely randomly (I hadn't installed any software in 2 weeks and just did regular hotsyncs so I don't think it was a bad program as everything was fine) shut off. I pulled the battery and it all works perfectly except for the CF slot. I'm starting to miss it as I haven't used it in about a week. I've been using the NX and UX together. I hope that further info gives some insight so I can get this machine rolling. Thanks guys.

An interesting note is that when I take out the CF card/s, the icon with the CF and the "?" still stay on the screen. Shouldn't it disappear all together? Just giving all the details. Not to use Dragons as an example but I sure hope mine doesn't turn out like his. For now, its just the CF slot. PLEASE HELP? :)

Just wanted to update everyone. I was about to send the unit to Chris Short and it has recognized the CF card much more frequent. It's still not perfect but... Also, I have only used it very little and haven't put it through its paces. Thus, I'm not sure if it will just shut off on me or if its stable yet with the CF slot. So, I'm not sending it to him just yet.

Side note: if I shake my VZ gently, I can hear something shaking. It only shakes with an up and down movement and not side to side. I'm assuming nothing should be moving and this leaves me to believe the internals need to be cleaned up a bit. Tightening screws, allocating wires, securing connections, etc...

OK, can someone figure this out.

I've discovered if I tilt the VZ away from me and to the right, it recognizes the CF more often. Just tonight, it has recognized and then not about 5 times. I still get the shaking in the unit and it sounds likes something loose. Any ideas. It's really weird, what'd you guys think?

I can. The CF card slot parts are loose. That is why they are shaking, and when they are tilt that way, they are touching the connectors (I didn't use the right words, but that is the problem). Contact Chris Short again (tell him you know Derek) and tell him this.

As of the last 20 min, its not working (the CF slot). . At least the cause of the problem is a lot more clear. What would make the device complete shut off though? My first inclination would be the battery connection is loose. Any other ideas? I wanna get an idea of what the problems is so I can tell Chris Short and have confidence that it is fixable and I can regain the stability and reliability of the unit. Oh, thanks Dragons. Hopefully I can start using my VZ full time again. I've been using my NX73 lately. I forgot how good these models were  . But the NX, UX, and TH all suck at viewing videos after spending quality time with a VZ. Man I'm spoiled :p

Complete shut off?

Yup, nothing worked. It happend twice and it pretty much felt like the battery became disconnected. If I put it on the charger the light would indicate it was charging but I could not turn it on. Nothing worked except the battery pull. Hasn't happened since but I haven't used that much either. I really think some wires and connections are loose or bad. But, I would like to get a second opinion. I would really, really hate for Chris Short to tell me he can't find anything wrong and he's sorry. I don't care about the money, I would just be dumbfounded to find out that my treasured VZ will never be what it was meant. But, I don't think the situation is that dreary, just saying.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm waiting for a 2G MS duo and a 4 GB CF card. I currently have a 1 GB MS Pro, a 500k MS Pro, and a 2GB CF card. I love watching my recorded TV shows and I have a couple of back-up movies (just in case). I mainly use my unit for word processing at work and to keep all my passwords, but having a couple of TV shows, a few audio books, some jazz, and e-books is a must for me. I started watching movies with my first NX and didn't start listening to music or audio books until my VZ. It's a sublime experience. DG it was seeing your buying question that had me order the VZ and I have no regrets. Thank you.

It's not quite a loss. At least not yet. Aren't you guys suppose to encourage me  Once it comes back from Short, it'll be good as new. That's what I'm sticking to

My mistake. I'm talking your temporary loss. Once you've used the VZ90, it's a let down to go back to your previous Clie. I still love my UX50, but I leave it at home for back-up. One of the things I missed most on the UX50 was the ability to do constant MS backups. That's been added back with the VZ90. Thus, if it's not a hardware issue, you can go back to previous backups when things worked. I copy MS backup to my external drive and label it so that I know what was working and added at the time of each backup.

I've never done that :o . Could you expound a bit? How so. I'm fairly certain the cause of my VZ problems are loose connections and unsecure wiring about. Chris Short replied saying he should be able to do this and I'm confident in his abilities. It'll be nice having a stable and secure VZ. Even so, I would like to be safe on the software side as well. How do you do MS backups?

Oh, the Clie comes with a backup program built in and it's called MS Backup. All of them had it until the UX50. If you backup using MS Backup, then it also gives a perfect backup of your modded apps.
After you've backed up your device,
1. Insert MS to a card reader(my computer has a slot for MS so I don't need the reader).
2. Make a folder on the hard drive that you want to copy your backup to and label it VZ90 or whatever device you're backing up.
3. Inside the VZ90 folder make a folder with the current date.
4. 4 Click on the Palm folder from the MS
5. Click on the Programs folder (it's inside the palm folder)
6. Drag the MSBackup folder to the open, dated VZ90 folder
7. Inside the Dated VZ90 folder, create a text file and state the files and what worked (Ex Docs to Go and Text Plus worked.
Below is an example of what's listed in text file:
1. 2006/03/06 10:25
2. 2006/03/16 07:18
3. 2006/03/21 07:35
4. 2006/03/22 03:23 (advantage, ebooks, audio, shark links, textplus, docs to go)

Because you have the dates and the times, you don't really need to make the text file. But I find I forget when stuff worked or which file to go back to if I make a text file. If you backup before you try something new or add programs, it's a lifesaver.

hope, the backups work well for when you get you wireless sync and everything else working. I also you my cell phone as a modem when I'm not near a free wireless port. I've named the network setting VZW, I have Lan settings saved for school, and home. I'm hoping my job will install access points. Sometimes it's a peel getting all this stuff to work so you want to save it someplace safe so that you don't have to redo it (I've backed up over previous backups by mistake or to save space on my card and then later found I needed it). With my old NX the settings would sometimes stop working and I'd restore a backup to an earlier time when everything worked, then move forward.
