SOrry for the total newbie question but when I buy and app, say Pocketlink version 2.0 and pay to register it what happens when they fix the bugs and come out with version 2.2? Can I upgrade for free? What if....gasp, I forgot my registration key? or will the same one even work?

Generally it should be. Usually apps in the same incremental version range are typically upgradable for free. Some charge when they do a major remake. It all depends on the developer.
Now take JackFlash for example, their's is based on time, something like 6 months I believe.

There are a number of apps that do charge for 'incremental' upgrades (Agendus, for example), but it's the exception, rather than the rule.
Also, some companies require you to re-register & pay again if you change your user name; it's not common, but it happens. It may be worth your while to check the developer's policy prior to purchase. Their response (or lack of it) will give you a 'hint' about their support, as well.
Always keep your reg codes in a safe accessable place (multiple places is better). Your computer could fail. Your PDA could crash. It is much better to have what you need on hand rather than have to email all the developers for every program you've ever registered. SplashID works great for this . . . ;)

there are a few companies that charge for app upgrades. not to mention any names, iambic. Most developers charge only a one time fee or charge for complete redesigns (such as 1.xx to 2.xx).

No better words have been spoken! It's happened to me and thank goodness I had everything printed out. It only takes a few seconds to hit print.

Hmm, I have upgraded a few times with iambic, but they were small updates.

When a program is registered is that data stored within the PRC file? Or somewhere else? If I DL the new version from Palmgear, will it replace the old version and force me to re-register?

No, it's not installed in the prc. I think it's in the saved preferences. Here again, some apps like McFile have a separate reg file. Additionally it all depends on the developer. The only thing standard, is that there are no standards. Each app has to be taken on a case by case basis.
