Do you mean the external add-on battery pack?
Do you run out of battery power all the time?
It you need it, it's not useless, unless you don't need it.

Unless you listen to music constantly _and_ you don't have a cradle at work, you likely won't need it. I use my battery pack for multi-day camping trips

I am looking to get a backup battery thing for camping trips and similar stuff. How does it work? Do you suggest getting one? I do quite a bit of backpacking and stuff so I would think it would be very helpful

It's simple and it works; I'm sure there are other cheaper solutions out there, but I have no complaints. I even use it if I need a charge while travelling abroad and on long plane trips.

I have the external battery pack for the NX.
it works great. You put in 4 double A's and you get quite a bit more life out of your NX .
it is great when you are away from your cradle for long periods of time.
I sat in a 6 hour seminar with 3 empty 128 MB memory sticks and took a video of the whole thing. It is a bit bulky to carry along, but it is well worth it when you're away from a cradle. The thing acts like a charger for your NX.. it charges your battery when the unit is off.

It works well. I have mine stocked with Energizer Rechargables so it is just one more rechargable solution for power.

Anyone know if those 4-AA chargers have a DC-DC stepup in them? They're advertised as being able to be run on NiMH cells (1.25V each) ... that'd give you just on 5V over 4 cells which would seem a little strange given the pack is already 5.2 volts ...
Then again I've also got the same puzzle with regards to those USB chargers ...

The external battery pack is a real lifesaver for my NX70 when I am travelling. My digital camera is using 4 AA rechargable NiMH batteries too. Therefore I just have to pack my charger and 2-3 sets of batteries when I go on a trip and don't need the NX70 powersupply. So far I am using AA NiMH batteries with 1.600mAH with good results. But I already saw 2000 mAH batteries and they should make the battery pack even more useful and long-lasting.
Although the battery pack is quite useful, it is also a bit bulky. So whenever I know that I will have a chance to access a computer quite frequently, I prefer to bring my USB hot sync/charging cable. I don't do hot syncs on other people's computers but just use the cable to recharge my NX70. :)

this is in regards to raybots question, I do believe that the 5.2volts mentioned on the unit is just the intake voltage and what it is rated for intake i dont believe that the battery itself is going to take close to a full 5 volt charge at once. i will find out and post up soon.
