Similar to the forum in the Clie board, I just ordered a Palm TX and am wondering what are the first steps I should do. Like, what things do I need to put on it to make it stable and function well? I really don't plan on putting much third party software on there so do I really need to use programs like UnCache and such?

If you do not plan to use third party software then you will have no problems... just install one program at a time... and backup backup backup... Don't let the install CD install to an older palm or clie directory...

Pay particular attention to the green boxes in the Read This First booklet in the box. For step-by-step directions type Upgrade in the Search Box on the TX Support page at palm.com. Use the first result. Check all third party apps against the lists at palmfacts.com and palmfocus.com. Install Uninstall Manager and a File Manager before any third party apps.

Enjoy your TX.

Install Resco Explorer (file manager) -- it has a built in backup function, and is well worth the money. Also, make sure you get an SD card ;)
Next, install the security update (SecurityPnl-TX_EN) from Palm, and BrightnessFix2-TX from palmpowerups.com.

After that, it all depends on what you want to do; I'd suggest getting the following free apps for starters:
PalmFiction (eBook reader - can read Project Gutenberg zipfiles directly among other things)
PalmPDF (for reading PDFs)
SMBMate (for connecting to local network shares -- good for file transfers!)
DA Launcher (for loading desk accessories)
MemoPadDA
ToDoDA

BlueFang (turns BlueTooth on only when needed)
ButtonsExTX (turns off the 5-way navigator with a pen stroke, allows better assigning of hard buttons)
NewTXHome (HomeWithFind.prc)
Handedness (if you like having persistent left handed landscape)
ScrollBar5 (to fix the hypersensitive scrollbars on the TX)
MemUnfragment (unless you want to buy UnCache)
PXAClocker (unless you want to buy WarpSpeed)
EasyCalc (great graphic calculator if you need one)
Tiktok (a great multitimer and stopwatch app)
WatchMaker (great all-round clock/alarm/timer)
Crony (automated event scheduler -- have to change the file type to "appl" to get it to work)
SunAngle (solar compass, tells you how long until sunset, much more)
Palm FTP Server (lets you run an FTP server ON your TX! How cool is that?)
PowerClip (clipboard extender from palmpowerups.com)
HRCapt (to take screenshots you can post to here and other forums!)
TCPMP (the ultimate in multimedia players! Make sure you get the aac and avc plugins; they aren't included in the regular bundle.)
HandyShopper (great checklist-style database)
Virtual Thumbboard (excellent text input alternative!)

Then, of course, there's the games:
LJP (emulator, requires UDMH [shareware] to play SNES and Genesis games)
HMaki (excellent tile matching game... you have to play it to get addicted!)
PScore (for keeping score on those real board games)
StaBu (Othello clone)
Sudoku (there's a bunch, find the one you like the best)
Yahdice (Yahtzee clone)
Vexed (make sure to get the HiRes upgrade as well as the 2.1b1 pack)

Will a Tungsten E2 screen protector work on a TX? I like the ARM screen protectors and they currently don't have one for TX

They will be rather small. The T5 is the same size.

So I realized that I'm going to be spending a lot on software. Resco Explorer is already $14 and I've fallen in love with Salling Clicker with is like $23. So the question is...what is everyone's opinion on Uninstall Manager? Is this something that is really necessary? Couldn't I just hunt down files in resco explorer and delete them?

Next question, where should I install resco explorer and Salling clicker? I know generally people recommend to install whatever you can into the SD card but sometimes I just like to install to the Palm itself..anyone's thoughts?

I think the E2 is the same as the E but I am not sure. Anyway the protector for the E is a little large for the TX but can be cut narrower to fit. It is very slightly shorter than the TX but so little it doesn't really matter.

Uninstall Manager is IMHO a mst have app, and should be installed before anything else on your palm. Yes you can go looking around with RE or another file manager, but UM is just so easy to use and so thorough (not to mention it's other options).

Rescoe Explorer should definitely be installed on the palm, AND the card. Put acopy of it in the palm\launcher directory so you'll have it in case of a hard reset. I know nothing about the Salling clicker app, but as a general rule I try to install everything that can go onto the card on the card. The TX has plenty of room in RAM, but the more on the card, the less you lose on a hard reset. It also decreases the size of your backup sets.

Delete in the App menu does not always delete all the files associated with an application. Uninstall Manager tracks everything an app creates, whether at installation or as the result of usage. It's an equivalent of automatically doing a Registry Clean after an Uninstall in Windows without having to go to the additional effort.
