I just finished this tutorial: It's a little complex I admit, but the results share an outstanding quality!

Information: This tutorial needs a little more effort then encoding your video over and over again, but needs less diskspace

(1200MB/h) and will result in MUCH HIGHER OUTPUT QUALITY

Warning: This guide was written using the German version of DVDx, so some terms might differ from your version

This tutorial expects the following products to be installed on your system:
-DVDx 2.0 (labdv.com)
-avi wrapper / link2 (videotools.net)
-VirtualDub (virtualdub.sourceforge.net)

1.Check if you have all the needed software installed!
2.Start DVDx
3.Insert your DVD in your drive
4.Choose File/Open DVD Root
5.Select the movie (usually the longest one)
6.InputSettings pop up enter these settings:
a)Index(00) Angle 1
b)Use ASPI enabled , DeMacrovision enabled
c)look for key on ever new VOB/cell
d)Audio 0x80, no Dolby Surrond, 41khz conversion: HighQuality
e)Framerate 25 for Europe, 30 for USA
f)subtitles: none
g)Audio/Video sync enabled
h)Deinterlace: odd lines
i)Choose for the other settings whatever sounds best to you
7.Press OK
8.Choose Settings/Output
a)Output is AVI (not really, we just need to extract sound first)
b)Audio: Save to WAV
c)Video OFF and No Codec
d)Frames: All
e)Premiere Plugin Encoder: DISABLED
9.Press OK
10.Choose File/Output
11.Enter filenames for A/V output (usually the same for MPEG and AVI, only extension differs), make sure there's enough space

(1 hour ~ 600MB)
12.Press OK
13.Press the red Encode button.
14.Wait for the soundextraction to complete. DVDx will actually produce an AVI and a WAV file, however the AVI file is empty

and could be deleted.
15.Again, choose Settings/Output
a)ENABLE the Premiere frame server
b)Choose resolution for PAL(Europe) 720x576, for USA 640x480
c)set Zoom to Full
d)Choose a bilinear resize mode
e)Range: All
f)Choose Plugin Settings
16.
a)FrameServer:Servermode AVIWrapper, Filename Whatever_You_Want.AVI
b)Audio:Disable save to WAV (We've already done that)
c)Postpro:Disable All
d)General:Enable Random Access
e)Press OK
f)Press OK again
17.Start the Frameserver by Pressing the red Encode button
18.Wait for the counter to reach 0 and press GO!
19.Start VirtualDub
20.Choose File/Open Video File and open your AVI framserver file, DON'T PRESS PLAY OR VIRTUALDUB WILL CRASH
21.Goto Audio WAV Audio... And choose the WAV file we created, make sure direct stream copy is enabled.
22.Because of a bug in DVDx, our video is still interlaced, we have to get rid of that: Choose Video/Filters, Press Add and

look for deinterlace.
23.Since our Output will be low-res Duplicate field 1 or 2 is the best choice. Press OK.
24.Now you can whatever filter you like, for example noise filters can improve quality and for cartoons you'll have to blur

the image or thin lines won't be visible on your clie. Also Cropping the image (using the crop button on any filter OTHER

then the deinterlace filter) is a good idea, just make sure deinterlace is still at the top when you're done
25.Press OK
26.Now we start another Frameserver with our now fixed video with sound: Choose File/Start Frame Server and leave the

standard name in the Frameserver as it is, Press Start
27.Choose a filename for your Frameserved Video, ending with .AVI
28.We now have the final version of our Video and if you want to preview just open Virtualdub once more and Open the last

file we just created. It should now play video and sound correct.
29. Problem is that ImageConverter read Video using the standard AVI-Interface but expects the sound to be uncompressed PCM.
30. So we open up the AVIWrap LINK2.EXE program and choose the file we created in VirtualDub for Input and enable Options/Raw

Audio
31. Now we choose an output AVI file (keep in mind that you will need another 600MB per hour since that new video will

contain the WAV file again) and push WRAP
32. Now we finally have a file which can be read by Imageconverter! Start it, add your last AVI file and choose any settings

you like! Now you're ready to convert.

33.Of course you can close all those frameservers once Imageconvert has finished, just close them in reverse order!

well according to his numbers you might actually be able to fit a full length DVD in standard quality on 1 ms. Very very interesting, i must say i am impressed, i'm gonna try this tonight, and post my results and see if my final video lives up to my hopeful scrutinization : ).

Enjoy.

I believe LP is "long play" If so, then yes, you can fit an hour in 60mb, but its the postal stamp viewing size. Standard quality is about twice that. So, theoretically one hour standard quality will take 120mb.

I do have a question though, have any of you noticed that Image Converter will just QUIT in the middle of converting on some mpeg-1 files, but not others, acting like its done? I'm trying to convert some Family Guy episodes, and a couple of em do exhibit this strange behavior. The rest are fine. It happens at around the same place every time. If anyone know whats causing this, please tell. Thanks.

Sometimes DVDx cannot find the key... maybe that's your problem ... if this happens you just have to play a few seconds of the movie in Powerdvd or WinDVD, then continue with 4. (This problem has never occured here, that's why I didn't write it into the tutorial).

Also I want to adress another problem so you won't be spending all evening just to get a corrupt file:
DVDx starts ALWAYS at the position of the slider in the main menue, SO MAKE SURE IT'S SET TO 00:00:00 before you encode/frameserve.

Also DVDs like Futurama with multiple movies of equal importance don't have the structure tha DVDx' Open DVDroot expects, so you have to use Open IFO and look through all IFO files in your VIDEO_TS dir.

sounds like you have a problem with the DVD laser. CD's would work fine since they use a different laser. First thing I'd do is get a CD/DVD drive cleaner. If that doesn't work you'll probably need a new drive.

well it's disheartening, but thanks for the info, i appreciate it. Don't have a spare $40 right now, so i guess i'll have to wait for now, but thanks again at least you put my wondering mind to rest.

Enjoy.

I experienced the same problem with my dvd rom before Christmas. I tried lots of software fixes and finally when out and replaced the dvd rom and now all is right again.

You may get away with a cleaning as was suggested by others, but the fix for me was replace.

What is the benefit of this process?
Is the quality significantly better?
Is the file size smaller?
