I am surprised at how many teenagers are here.
On the thread of remembering what we were doing when we were 12, I certainly wasn't using a computer at home. It was before the IBM PC was sold. The closest we had to a computer was Pong.

The reason there are so many young people here is because young people adopt these kinds of technologys much easier then older people [excluding those here, of course :D]
Palms get cheaper and cheaper, and have so many cool functions: Alarm clocks, remote controls, games, spreadsheets, book readers, dictionarys, homework helpers, picture viewers, and all kinds of software to cater to your every need.
Palms and clones get cheaper every day. I bought my first real PDA [Palm Pilot Pro] when I was .. oh about 15 I think it was. I was so amazed at what it could do for me with the right sofware. I did everything with it. I tweaked and hacked it to hell and back, and continue this tradition to this day.

In my opinion u have a pda, in the first place, for these apps:
Agenda
Addresses
Notepad
To do list
All the other apps are also very useful too, but i don't think you would buy a pda for that purpose.
So, now i ask myself: What does a -16 year old with a PDA. I do not think they really *need* it. So many things to do that you can't remember?? Isn't it just to show off with friends? No offence! I am just wondering...
PS. I bought myself a psion siena when i was 16... but actualy i didn't used it.

OK - I'm really dating myself here, but here goes . . . When I was 12:
I had to wear dresses to school - girls weren't allowed to wear pants.
Panty hose weren't invented yet.
I learned how to type in high school on a manual typewriter!
A color TV was high on my wishlist.
We had to get up off the chair to change the station and volume on the TV!
I went to my first rock concert -- The Beatles.
All my music was on 45's or LP's -- 8-track tapes weren't even around then!
Ahhhh...the golden days!

As for my Mom, who's a Clie user as well, I disclosed her age in the similar topic in the TG series forum. Let's just say she was 36 when I was born...

I am 15 and I use my SJ20 to:
Read ebook (iSilo), news (AvantGo)
Jot down important thing quickly (DiddleBug)
Use as alarm clock (World Alarm Clock) with GeekSound 2.4
Dictionary (Kdic)
Play game (Minesweeper)
Write Diary (eDiary)
Note down homework (ToDo List)
Remember due date of things and events with alarm enable if necessary (DateBook)
Write down important things, or as note taker (Memo)
Store info about my friends, teacher, etc (Address)
Store my personal information such as website account (Yaps)
Read/Write my e-mail while on the schoolbus (I usually sleep on the bus though;) ) / at school (Mail)
Do assignment, not likely though...I prefer desktop (Docs to Go)
Calculator...probably with graphing (powerONE)
And some other things...just can't remember anything else now...
Mabye it's at the time you use PDA there isn't that much useful applications available.

Well, the SJ30 I bought myself, and my parents are giving me a rough time about the NX. My mom did assure me that I will get one, but my fear is that Sony is going to discontinue them soon. That's the last thing I need. They know it can do everything a laptop can do, for less than half the price, but I don't know whats holding them back. Maybe the Corian countertop my mom wants? :(

LOL, I never even use these. I only use the agenda to keep track of what I want to watch on TV. I use addresses to write down all my website login data, I don't use note pad, and to do list has never seen more then two entrys: I don't actually need one.
All the other apps are also very useful too, but i don't think you would buy a pda for that purpose.
I buy my PDA's exclusively for the software I can run on it. I tweak them to hell and back, and proud of it. I can do about as much with my old IIIC and SL10 as I can with my laptop!
So, now i ask myself: What does a -16 year old with a PDA. I do not think they really *need* it. So many things to do that you can't remember?? Isn't it just to show off with friends? No offence! I am just wondering...
Oh please, I'm allmost feeling offended :p My family doesn't understand. The people I meet don't understand.. But that all changes when I show them what I can do with it. My palm is actually saving me time, money and headaches. I have everything I want on it: Books, pics, files, all the programs I need, games, converters, whatever. If you can think it, you can do it with a Palm. That is why I have one. And I don't care what anyone else thinks.
PS. I bought myself a psion siena when i was 16... but actualy i didn't used it. [/B]
Me too. I still have it. The reason I didn't use it was because after two months, Palm Pilot Pros went on sale here in The Netherlands, and it had a touchscreen and a zillion free software titles.
According to a quick and off-the-head calculation of stated ages on this thread (assisted by calc on NR70 ;) the average age of an SL/SJ user is 25.

I'm 25 and I have an SJ20 as a backup for my T665c. I do use the SJ20 to type my notes in my grad courses. I use Thought Manager for that and you can't save them to the MS and they eating up the memory on my T665c.
Anyhow, those comments about what a 14 or 15 year old need a PDA for? Well, I have a sister who is 15 and a brother-in-law who is 14. The two of them are involved in 2 or 3 sports each. They are also in all honors courses. These classes involve tons of reading, projects, papers, and group work that has to take place outside of school. My brother-in-law is involved in scouts, and both of them are involved in a few clubs. They are also beginning to manage some pretty hectic social lives. Part time jobs are also in the near future for both of them.
Each of them have more to remember and manage in a day than I do and I'm a full time teacher, part time grad student, with a husband and house who also enjoys several hobbies and volunteering when I can find the time.
What would they do with a PDA? (Niether has one but we are seriously considering buying one for each of them.) Well, the PDA could replace the ENORMOUS day planners each of them carry. A PDA woud be a great investment for each of them as they could install the graphing calculators on them to replace the big bulky Ti whatevers they carry around now. PDA's could also save their backs as they could download ebooks and avoid carrying around some of their heavy books.
Finally, a PDA could save some headaches with their parents as their parents would have one place to look to see where their kid is and when. Niether set of parents own PDAs and I don't expect they ever will. However, both kids could sync to the computer and the parents could read their outlook or palm desktop.
Just a few things these kids could do with a PDA.

Yeah, and then some. Let me tell you, I haven't touched a paper book or written a single line of text since I graduated in 2000. I've been absolutely paper-less for over two years. And absolutely loving every minute of it.
I love reading books. I read for at least an hour and a half, each and every day. I read books on my Jornada PPC [higher res, easier format], and if I actually owned every book I'd read on it, I would have an entire room full of books  And I'm not kidding.
Like I said, my PDA's are saving me time, money, and enhancing every aspect of my daily life.

I can thank my parents for beginning my obsession with PDAs when they got me my first model in 1999 - a Visor Deluxe. Since them I've upgraded countless times and this time I think I'm going to stick with my NX70V for a while. It does everything I need it to, and more.
My Mom has an old T415 (I'm thinking about trading her my SJ20 for her T415) she doesn't use that often and I keep encouraging her to use it more. She still write's her appointments down on a calendar in the kitchen, and I keep saying she could keep track of them on her Clie.

I'm 16 and have an SJ20 that I purchased myself. (Darn it! I really wanted colour and bought it just before the SJ22 came out for the same price... such is life) Do I really need my Clie? No, I could do perfectly fine without one, but I really like technology and it does make my life easier in some ways. It helps me to remember my assignments, and it is very useful to me as I can review emails from anywhere and also check my calander anywhere. My Clie also acts as a Gameboy when I'm bored, which i think many people my age do. I also purchased my Clie hoping to use it through university too. (unless I go crazy and buy a colour model..lol)
I'm not the only student in my school with a PDA, but I think that I may be the only one who purchased it myself, also, the only one with a superior Clie (m100? come on! lol...). However, I'm not sure as to how many of these students use their PDAs for purposes other than games and status... I know one guy does, but one other guy got a PDA used it to read AvantGo for the first week while he attracted attention to himself. Now, he never brings it to school anymore... probably just collecting dust...

Well, I'm 21, I'm in college full time, and I work 52 hours a week. I'm also ADHD. With out my Clie by my bed when I wake up I have no idea what day it is or what I'm supposed to be doing. I use it as a day planner, a phone book, ebook, diet manager, gameboy, etc... the list goes on, between my palm, my desktop and my laptop I'm equipped for pretty much anything that comes along in my day, whenever I'm w/o any one of those it makes life a lot harder for me.
I currently have an SJ33 that replaced my broken t615 that replaced my Palm Vx, that replaced my Visor Deluxe, that replaced my Palm 5000, that replaced my Newton Message Pad.
My mom now has the Palm Vx and loves it, I have the 5000 up on a shelf just to show my geeky friends!

I use it a lot for everything. I even use it at school. I live in Bogota, Colombia (South America). I am the only person in my school who owns a handheld. I also have the PEGA-KB11 portable keyboard, and I use it for notetaking in some classes.

26, and using the built in apps lightly. I bought a PDA mainly for scheduling, diet management, and ebooks/games.
Using an SJ-33/U, and I use it to fill in the gaps between my laptop and desktop use, not as a replacement.
AS to how teenagers could need one of these? I'd have died for one as a teen. My senior year I was so busy with extracurriculars I was hardly ever _in_ my classes, yet I had to keep up with the class work and what was due when.
But alas, PDAs were much more pricey, new and exotic then.

I'm 15, and I use an N760 currently. I had a Palm m125 for two weeks (bad battery, returned it. Best thing I ever did!) and a T415 for eight months (best b & w unit EVER IMNSHO). I switched to an N760 last January (got it on new year's day... hehe)
I'm surprised by how many people are surprised by how many teens use Palm devices. Ever since I started in Junior High, I noticed a ton of people using different forms of electronic organizers. When I started my 8th grade year, I moved up to Fort Collins, Colorado, where Hewlett-Packard has a big plant. So, Fort Collins has a big "geek population". I noticed a huge difference in the amount of handhelds there... Tons of iPaq, Journada, and Palm m1xx users all over the place. This school could actually get into some serious arguments over which is better, Palm OS or Pocket PC OS... Pretty sad.
So, I moved down to Tempe, Arizona before my freshman year. I didn't notice a ton of PDA's (well, PDAs in terms of Personal Digital Assistants... If we start talking about Public Displays of Affection, that's a different story ;) )
Now out of my school of about 1700 students, about 150 of them are actually a part of a different school that shares a campus with my school. They have a lot more of a technology focus, and I do see quite a bit of PDAs there. Mainly people seem to use the Palm m-series, but I see the occasional Toshiba e310 or Clie.
As to my academics, I just got into that school for next year. Last year, I was involved in three honors courses.
So, here's an example of how I use my handheld daily:
Manage homework and coursework with 4.0Student (links to To Do List and automatically creates a new To Do item for every assignment)
Handle all of my appointments (a lot, over a full year I accumulated about 600 of them) using DateBk5 or Agendus (I'm trying to decide which I want to use permanently
Take notes using Memo Pad or PenPenCol, which exports notes to a .bmp image on the Memory Stick, so I can print them later or insert them into assignments
Type assignments and create PowerPoint Presentations using Documents to Go 5.0 Premium
Print documents via IR using PrintBoy
Beam notes to my girlfriend in between classes :D
Play one of my 40-plus games, including a Gameboy emulator, whenever the teacher isn't looking
Listen to MP3s in between classes
Use PowerOne Graph for Geometry as a replacement for my bulky TI-83+ Silver Edition
Do e-mail at lunch using DataVizMail
Impress friends with videos created using Kinoma Producer
Increase typing speed using CIC WordComplete
Use BibleR+ at the Christian Club's meetings
Beam notes to friends, or use Banner for sending notes visually to lower-tech friends ;)
Look at my daily schedule and assignments in Facer
Next year I'm planning on getting my hands on that new WiFi MS and a keyboard, since my new school's a lot more technology-oriented.
So, students do get a lot out of their handhelds. I admit that I take it to an extreme, but it means that I don't need a $2000 laptop!

Hey, there's another 15-year-old Zeke out there slinging a Palm OS device! Schweet! Well, I'll be jealous when you get your SJ33... But look out for the TG50, by the time you turn 16 the TG50 should drop in price by a lot.

The TG-50 doesn't really interest me all that much - I prefer Graffiti to a thumbboard, and being budgetarily restricted, I don't have any Bluetooth devices. However, if it DOES drop below $250 in two weeks, I may look at it ... until then ...

What I'm wondering is, how the heck do all these 12-15 yr olds afford the darned things? They're too young to work a real day job, babysitting and mowing lawns doesn't pay too well, and it takes an awful lot of $10-$50 birthday/Xmas/Hannukah/etc. gift checks to come up with the kind of dosh you need to buy an SJ33 + MS.
More amazing still are the ones who say they've gone through several models in rapid succession; are they inheriting their parents' older models as Mom and Dad upgrade to pocket PCs or CE devices?
More power to 'em for being so techno-savvy, it gives me hope for the future, but when I was 12-15 I had trouble scraping enough cash together to buy a new music album or concert ticket so I'm really curious about where the buck stops---or starts, as it were---for these kids.

There's a thread here at CS where some young guy is complaining that he got bored with his NX80! Give me a break.
Now, I'm not trying to insult all the young(er) members of CS, but usually a person really appreciates something he worked for himself, rather than getting it, or the money for it, as a gift.

Orincarnia
08-17-2003, 01:32 PM
USR? whats that? is pilot one of the original palms? cause when people see my clie they say "oh you got a palm pilot" kinda gets irritating cause no where does it say pilot on the device.......
Stann
08-17-2003, 01:45 PM
The original "Palm" was made by U S Robotics (the modem people) until 3-Comm bought USR. 3-Comm spun off Palm as it's own company, at the same time or nearly the same time 3-Comm also sold off USR.
If memory serves me correctly the first ones were called Pilots, then 3-Comm called them "Palm Pilots". Now they are just "Palm".

Stann

I can't remember. However some more history without dates, the people who founded Handspring were some of the same people that developed the 1st Pilot.
The reason your "Clie" is refered to as a Palm or Palm Pilot, is that it uses the same software that Palm's do.

Orincarnia
08-21-2003, 05:46 AM
are you urethat was an upgrade? it seems to me that the m130 has a better form feel and sceeen thatn the sj33.........oh well i am speaking out of ignorance
strider_mt2k
08-21-2003, 06:12 AM
Kinda.
The m130 has only 8MB ram, 33Mhz CPU, zero serious sound capability, a 20% smaller sub-standard (color)160x160 display, and a suprising tendancy to crumble about the rear case.
I upgraded to an SJ33 from an m130 (and an m125 before that.)
When I did, I was amazed at the additional capabilities, and stunned by the incredible display.
I am actually a little ashamed to have aspoused Palm for so long. The hardware kept letting me down. :(
