@Alan, thanks for keeping the podcast torch burning.

You're welcome!

It is a very disappointing state. I can't even keep both of my own 'casts going. I have a feeling that there will be some opportunities for the folks who come on to the scene once PDA die-hards like myself are gone. I often wonder if the decline of PDAs is directly effecting the number of people who come to the message boards, engage in posting ideas, and listening to and recording podcasts. Just a few months ago, there was a fair amount of Palm OS podcasts, now I think it's down to just Tyler Faux and myself. But, don't worry. I'm not ready to my final podcast sign off just yet.

Actually, I still enjoy the podcasts weekly, although I don't post feedback as much as I used to. The handheld market isn't as exciting as it used to be; and without the rants of Jeff Kirvin, there are less "fourm battles" to join (Yeah, last time Jeff said you were too nice, Alan :) ). But the real reason is that school work is getting heavier and heavier, and I've got exams to prepare for... :(

Anyways, sorry for the loss of feedback posts, but that doesn't mean we're not tuning in. Keep up the good work!

Also, one point on SharkLink. Looks like a great thing to have, I'd vote for a "NetFront" version :)

Alan, Stop talking me into a Treo. I buy one more device, my wife is going to kill me!!!

Anyway, the podcasts are great, I wish I had the contacts and the time to help, my life is just so busy and all my time is dedicated to work, kids, and my wife (not always in that order). Your podcasts are very informative and are a great companinion to the forum posts.

Alan, Stop talking me into a Treo. I buy one more device, my wife is going to kill me!!!

Oh man, are you not going to like this week's show. I was going to bring you all to my "group tharapy" and talk about all the reasons why I need to upgrade to a new Treo and fast. I was going to follow that up with a discussion of what software I would be using more than I do now with my T5 + Wi-Fi card. And don't worry about the Palm stuff, I'll have the weekly dose of that too.

Anyway, the podcasts are great

Thanks guys. I was starting to worry that the lack of posts ment that there was a lack of listeners.

I've done my fair share of Palm rants over on Tech Talk. I'm sure that I'll have some more coming soon. In the mean time, I'll be sure to have Jeff back from time to time as my special co-host.

It is sad to see the OS die, but it seems like all interest in Palm OS is fading fast. Palm's handhelds are so vanilla that they do nothing to inspire many of us from the Cliesource days and the Treo 700W has seemed to turn many users away from the Palm OS as well. I hope you keep the podcast going, because I still use my Zodiac and I hope to some day replace it with a Treo or hopefully future Palm OS multimedia PDA. I just don't see how much longer OS5 is going to get the job done for though.

I don't think that Palm OS is dying. Rather, I look at it as Palm OS is evolving. Yes, some day, we won't be using devices powered by Palm OS 5.x. Just like a day long ago we saw the end of Mac OS 9. The next version of Palm OS, regardless of who writes it, will be more like what happened with Mac OS X. Yes, the same GUI that we all know and love will be there (updated slightly, I hope). Yes, the same great applications will be there. However, deep down, way down at the heart of the New Palm OS, will be a completely new and powerful micro-kernal that will allow software develoers and hardware developers to deliver even more awesome tools and software that ever. When I think about where Palm OS and computing has gone in the last 10 years, I have to stop and thing about where it will be in the next 10 years. What will my girls think of those silly little date books I used to carry around? I'm not sure we're we are going, but I know that I'm excited to be along for the ride.

I hope you keep the podcast going

Don't worry, I will. I am also going to try very hard to get Tech Talk back on track also.

I have to disagree. Palm OS 5.4.9 or any new dot release Palm issues between now and the next version of Palm OS is doing everything it needs to do for the class of device it's running on. Look, Palm handhelds are not mini-laptops. Palm devices (and Clies also) can do a lot of cool things. When I got my first Palm, I had no idea in 7 years I'd be using one to download e-mail and surf the web. Listen to podcasts and download the news. Multitasking is not required on device with a footprint like that of a Palm. There are plenty of applications that can run in the background: e-mail fetching, audio, IM. No one has conviced me that the next Treo or Palm handheld must have multitasking. I just don't see it. Now, on a dual display device, like the one Ed taked about in last weeks editorial, ya I can see multitasking being important. But not today. And I don't think we'll see it this year either.

The Palm OS is not going to die out. Being a large percent of handheld business, I believe that Palm's future OS will be backwards compatible and also support new functions like multitasking. Long Live the Palm OS. Like Alan said, they will probably call it a different name, but who is to say they wont pay to extend the license or use some of the code to make the old compatible with the new. I only speculate no hard facts here.

Keeping my fingers crossed that you are right. The Mac 9 to Mac X evolution makes a ton of sense and I hope that is where the Palm OS goes in the future.

It is my understanding that ALP will have a native emulation mode that will be built-in to allow the "old" Palm OS code to run normally under Linux.

The Mac 9 to Mac X evolution makes a ton of sense and I hope that is where the Palm OS goes in the future.

To me, this makes a whole lot of sense. Move forward. Backward compatible. Keep developers and customers happy. Offer new solutions. Sounds like a winner to me. PalmSource may not have been able to pull it off by themselves (not enough income to keep things running until the OS was finished), but with ACCESS behind them, I think that this will totally be possible.

This whole talk of ALP and Linux based OS for my palm upsets me to the poitn that the treo 650 will be my last palm pda. The next smartphone i may get is the 6700, but will have that palm emu on it :)
