I read their list of clie compatable devices and the nx80v wasn't included. Was this just an oversite? Will this work on my nx80v?

It's hard to beat eReader, especially with the built-in dictionary ($$) that allows me to tap-hold on a word and get an instant definition. Came in real handy reading "War and Peace" by Tolstoy recently! :)

Mobipocket web companion (unpurchased) will beat Avantgo in selection of web sites without the Avantgo ads, I use it to hotsync news from the web, but use plucker via file transfer to my ms card on Clie TJ-37. The websites Palm 24/7 on mobipocket are a bit redundant(repeats parts) but using LA Times on a palm IIIc is more convient than my pc using dial up.
Using a dictionary on your pda? Wouldn't that require a memory card? I'd might as well write a memo note to look up the word later and do a batch of words instead of all that work to look up one word.

Well I already paid for the Pro addition years ago, but this is cool for everyone else. Guess Amazon plans to start using Mobipocket soon and wants everyone to have the Pro version.

I just installed MobiPocket 5.1 for the first time to take a look at it. I do agree with wellsjs however about eReader. The convienence of looking up words all right on the spot from within eReader can't be beat.

I am curious to find out how MobiPocket works, so I'll be playing with it today.

Wouldn't that require a memory card? I'd might as well write a memo note to look up the word later and do a batch of words instead of all that work to look up one word.Well, duh, yeah! I must confess . . . I use a memory card! :D

"all that work" of seeing a word you don't know, holding your stylus to it right there, and getting the definition popped up to you so that you can apply the proper meaning to what you are reading (work?), vs. taking out a pen, writing down the word, and looking up a bunch of words later, flipping through pages of a conventional book dictionary to find it manually, finally arriving at the meaning of the word(s) too late to have made sense of what you were reading . . .

Your suggestion is much more "work" and counter-productive, I must say! Isn't the object of reading to understand/comprehend what you are reading? Why would you opt to gain the understanding of a word later?

Your suggestion is like saying, "Wouldn't it be easier to pull a wagon two miles yourself, and then walk back, bring the horse and hitch it to the wagon." :p

@stefe, use Sunrise with Plucker. There is a new app Sunrise XP in beta that doesn't have all the features of Sunrise.

I've been trying Mobipocket Reader for the first time today, and I am not quite satisfied with it. I guess I'll have to play with it some more to make up my mind if I want to keep it installed or not. Maybe I'll install the beta to find out what they plan on doing next.

There is a ppdb called "bluepalm" that installs with the reader but it doesn't appear in my file manager or anywhere wlse that I can see.
What's that all about?

I use Mobipocket for checking out electronic books from the library (http://califa.lib.overdrive.com/), so it's earned a permanent place as part of the top four solutions for reading books and news on the palm. Plucker, isilo, ereader (but not avantgo) are there too.

Youre kidding me! I had no idea you could check out "electronic books" from the library!

Do I have to return them on time???

LOL!!!! Hey guys, I have found out that native readers are much better than this software. The only good feature of Mobipocketreader is the powerpoint support. It is too much trouble to convert everything else before putting it on the device. I use Palmfiction and it does just about everything this program does, plus much more. And for PDF I use, of course, PalmPDF. I have found this software very useless.

Programs like eReader and Mobipocket are important for those of us that want to read books that are DRM protected. PalmFiction and the dozens of other palm doc readers are useless for this.

Amazon now owns Mobipocket and once they start fully utilizing it I have a feeling this may easily become the number one ebook format.

Long live "open source" and down with proprietary formats! ;)

I'm not a big fan of DRM either, but long live reading books from major publishers not in the public domain. Tough to do without DRM.

I remember when Stephen King did an experiment with selling an online ebook in an open format, using the honor system. I bought the first couple of segments (yes, paid money and everything), but I didn't get around to buying the third segment because he pulled the plug on the project after he found something like 98% of downloads weren't paid for. So I guess I can see the reasoning behind DRM. I don't have to like it, but I understand why it's there sometimes. Of course, you can always argue about fair use and such (and I often do), but it's the dishonest people out there that ruin it for the rest of us. Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled topic.

I've downloaded Mobipocket again, and I'm playing around with the eNews things and such. We'll see if I like it enough to keep it. (I've ditched AvantGo altogether now, because the availability was becoming terrible, plus everytime I switched the computer I was syncing on (i.e. go home or go to work), it would delete the settings and I'd get a logon screen instead of content. (I'd have to remember to always "Refresh all content" any time I was at a different computer than the last sync. It eventually just became too much of a pain in the arse.)) So here's to hopefully smooth testing...

I believe the addition of RSS to MobiPocket Reader v5.2 will make it an absolute killer reading app for the Palm. It is my preferred reader, but only because eReader feels clunkier.

Shrink: Bluepalm is a tiny antialiased--"smoothed"--font for MobiPocket Reader. It's nice, but it's so small I personally feel it's only usable on older, low-res palms. Alex Pruss' FontSmoother (http://www.zlthemes.com/ProductDetailListing.php?PID=79) is an inexpensive and worthwhile investment that will give all your applications the capability the display eye-soothing fonts.

Wellsjs: MobiPocket Reader has the same dictionary functionality as eReader, and it's also pretty swell. I've tried it with demo dictionaries, but the real ones are so expensive--so I've made do with my old PocketLingo ones.

The Merriam Webster one I bought (yes, eReader has a lame demo one too) is great and was only $6.50.

Thanks rand0m11. I use the reader for the great Oxford dictionary as well as the Merck Manual. I also have a few ebooks loaded as well. I have eReader installed as well but didn't like the dictionaries it offered at the time.
