hi al... I recently bought a Clie SJ33, had problems so I returned it and upgraded to Clie NX60/U

The SJ33 has a 66mhz processor (Palm OS4.1)

The NX60 has a 200mhz processor (Palm OS 5)

Naturally I figured the NX would leave the SJ in the dust speedwise, but it seems that the SJ33 was faster??? especially while viewing pictures.

can anyone shed some light on this for me?

As far I as I know, the majority of the current PalmOS programs are based on Dragonball command set (ie. NR, T, SJ, M Series).

Newer RISC based PalmOS devices (NX, NZ, TunstenT) runs these programs via an translator (PACE) which translates Dragonball codes into RISC codes. Because of this additional layer of translation, Dragonball based programs running on NX does not necessarily "runs at 200mhz".

Huh? No way, my NX blows the doors off the NR that I have, by a long shot.

Maybe you were using the Clie Viewer app. That app is unusally slow. Try AcidImage, or Splash Photo. In Acid Image, images open almost instantly (less than a second).

Hehehe....that's like saying "I just upgraded to a Dodge Viper from a Toyota Camry, and the Camry seemed faster to me......"
Just kidding around, had a good chuckle when the mental image of someone returning a Viper, saying "My Camry was faster" Hehehe.

Edit:

I would have said Pinto if we were talking about the 16 or 33mhz Dragonball.

Cbulock is dead on. I'll bet you anything you were using the Clie viewer that came with the machine. That program is just an embarrassment.

Get Acid Image. A 320x480 pic will open up in less than a second, and 800x600 image only takes about 2~3 seconds.

There is also a new replacement viewer coming out shortly on Sony's support site. For general picture viewing, Acid Image rocks!

The NX is very fast. Use an ap like Shanghai 1.1 made for OS 5 and you can really see the difference. Even on the Tungsten its jumpy and slow. On the NX with its 200Mhz processor its silky smooth and very fast.

The only thing that I noticed faster about the Tungsten is the speed of the SD card. If you are accessing files off of a card with Docs to Go (for example) then the tungsten will be faster.

When doing something from the RAM it is slower than the NX. You can't even play MP3s on the Tungsten while playing Bejewelled or Shanghai without it locking up.
