You are asking a good question for a new owner of an NX series Clie. According to the specifications of the NX-80, it has 32 MB of RAM Memory (16 MB available to the user to store files and prorams) and 32 MB of ROM memory. Sony programs in ROM memory cannot be changed or deoted. This leaves you at least 16 MB of RAM for your apps and files.
If your question is how to best take advantage of the memory on the NX, you might consider two options. First, a good third party launcher (like ZLauncher) makes it easy to move and launch apps from the memory stick to free up RAM. Also look at Jackflash. This incredible app takes advantage of unused Flash ROM memory not used by Sony. On my NX-80, JackFlash made about 16 MB of ROM available to me. Fantastic application and worth every penny you pay for it. If you have to reset your handheld, the apps you store in Flash ROM remain unchanged. Cool, huh.
'so, to answer your question, system memory is at least 16 MB and cannot be modified. There is 16 MB available to you as RAM and, with JackFlash, another 16 MB available for your use. If my math is wrong, another 1src member will surely correct me.

Sony Clies are great devices but most don't include nearly enough ram.
I'm glad I've got my Tapwave Zodiac 2 with 63.8mb free out of 115.9mb of RAM ;)

I agree with JackFlash being worth every penny--I don't know what I would be doing with all my apps without it. A couple of other memory expanding options are LinkStart (which allows you to move programs and associated files to and from memory stick) and the program compression in Palm Commander (which allows you to compress currently unused programs to save memory). The best thing about both of these is that they're FREE!
