Have you ever noticed that when taking shots using flash, the background tends to darken? Is this a normal thing or is this a defect?

this is a typical camera... flash in foreground makes items brighter, items in background makes things darker... try experimenting with low power flash...

Also try the night sene Portrait mode, where it is using the long exposure time combined with a flash pop. The camera do a very good job at mixing the flash with the background.
