View Full Version : Bye bye Palm OS!

Hehehehe. I'm hanging up the Palm OS hat. No, I did not get a Dell Axim. I just bought a Sharp Zaurus SL-C1000.
Here are my reasons.
-VGA- oohhhh so pretty! Videos and so much workspace.
-Thumboard- tap tap homework :-) and Instant Messaging
-Clamshell
-SD card slot
-CF card slot type I and II.
-Microdrive support- hmm 6gb Microdrive on ebay for only $199
-CF wifi cards supported. I will buy one eventually. Videos can be streamed :D
As for games, I can still play emulators. Those were the only games I ever played on handhelds.
:D :D :D :D -dances-
Specs listed here. (http://conics.net/shp/pda/zaurus-sl-c700/sl-c1000/) It is converted from Japanese to English.

And I get Netfront and Opera.

I'd have regrets. I promised myself and said openly that my next device would be a Linux PDA, and this was in the summer. Well I had the gret chance to get a Zire 72 so I went for that and sold it and made profit. Now, my Zaurus is on its way! :-)

Hey, I see you finally got a 'Z'
Try some of the ROMs here:
http://www.oesf.org/forums/
A lot of people start out with Cacko, as it's just a modified Sharp ROM with a lot of new features and tweaks.
Also go to Meanie's page. He's got a 3100 & 3000, but a lot of stuff pertains to the SL-C1000 also

Could you do a review for us. That may be the device for me. How is Third-Party Support. I assumed it was minimal but didn't know of the forums. As for the SL-C1000, it costs like $400 + $200 MD = $600 Minimum cost + WiFi card = $600+
I don't have that much money. If I did, I'd save it for laptop cost or laptop accessories.
That's just me though. Let us know the pros and cons of the Zaurus when u get it.

No WiFi or Bluetooth is a big down. How is the battery life?
Jon_J
02-11-2006, 10:37 PM
I haven't tried bluetooth or wifi. Most people keep a large SD card in all the time and use the CF slot for BT & Wifi.
I haven't used mine on the battery much, (I stay home in the winter). But the battery is easily removed/replaced. :) I heard they last 6-8 hours on the 3100. The SL-Cxxxx series come with an improved battery and is larger capacity than older models.
The thing I like is, All the software is free! (Almost). there are some commercial apps, but I have a difficult time purchasing from places that won't take a money order, or cash. Streamlinecpus, the place I bought mine from, is in Florida (USA), so I just sent them a money order. I think Legodude is still waiting for his to be shipped. Mine was sent to me within 7 days of mailing money order.

Um, I like how they made the look but ou yeah, when it lacks on wlan and bluetooth it is big lack. It is just had wlan and it would be a bit more light than 278g then it would be sooo cool :)
But aa on the other hand I don't want to be rude and say that is a poor bought because pda is quite personal choice ;)

If you want a microdrive, why didn't you get a C3100?
Willing to get a Zaurus, I assume you don't use PIM often, then. From my experience with a C3000, the Zaurus is one of the best handheld computers (Expectially web browsing with NetFront, getting a WIFI CF card is a must), but the PIM software is too slow to launch. Please let us know about the application launch speeds on a C1000, since I don't know if the slowness of the C3000 is due to the MD.
Enjoy the handheld that out sold Clies in Japan!

My UXtreme may not be VGA or OLED, but the smaller screen takes up less power and with my 3880mah mod, it lasts much longer :). My UXtreme can also do BT unlike the VZ and Zaurus and can take pics unlike the VZ and Zaurus. My next PDA would be a Zaurus if I was not limited by software availability. I actually thought about bidding on a C1000 today until the last minutes ;) & decided against it. The seller didn't mention any support, & I was worried with the converted Eng one.
If I am getting this, I would like to use it for the fullest, & I suck at linux--I do have Red Hat Linux 9 for Dummies book in my shelf:D
I read somewhere that CF slot should be used for either wireless & bluetooth & not on SD . And since bluetooth isn't supported by Sharp, it's very dodge. Also, only 1gb max can be taken on to the SD slot. My major beef with it would be the 1gb SD max thing. Has that been fixed? With the right software, I guess they can all be overcomed--esp w/ linux OS ;)
I still like to get one of those--esp for emus. But I still prefer UX50 :)

Palm can do USB Host too! Dont forget the Alphasmart Dana, which can print over USB Host. On PPC, most Toshiba's have USB Host, as do the new Acers, and a few Asus's, as does the Eten smartphones. Its just not necessary on most Palm's because they are not trying to be little PeeCees.
Dont forget the Zen people! Bluetooth is what peripherals is all about, not carrying chunky USB cables.

Yes, the UX50 is nice. I almost went for that. lol.
CF wifi and bluetooth cards are supported by the Sharp Zaurus. I care little for BT at all. All I want is to buy a CF wifi card. There is both a CF and SD card slot. As a former Palm OS user, I already invested my money in SD cards for storage so that won't be an issue when I get a CF wifi card. 1gb SD card max? What? I am sure that was fixed. I don't have any cards over 1gb anyway. If I wanted uber storage, I could buy a microdrive and stick it in the CD card slot ;) . There are English conversion guides for the Zaurus. The previous owner of mine already did it and I told him to leave it like that. There is no US support. Sharp never sold these products in the US. There is no warranty in the US from Sharp. However, if you buy from a vender/importer, most of them offer their own warranty. You won't be finding support but there is the Unofficial Sharp Zaurus Faq. (http://www.oesf.org/index.php?title=Unofficial_Zaurus_FAQ) Also, the Zaurus community is very friendly and something I like to call "hard X core." A lot like the hardcore Clie community which was abandonned by Sony. There is less than 200 active US users of the Sharp Zaurus. But still, this is a huge community effort to help each other.

Being a user of the Sidekick previously, I'm basically afraid of platforms without a whole selection of third-party apps. Thats why I stick with Palm or WM (maybe in the future). Linux has a lot of apps on this site I found the other day (http://killefiz.de/zaurus/) but this still doesn't compare to the variety of Palm OS applications. Could you take some pictures of your new unit for us in comparison to the Zire or some other devices, units, accessories. Thanks. I know about the application issue. Palm OS has so many. My main concern was finding "killer" apps for the Zaurus that I must have and theu did have them.
But now if I want to put some astronomy software on my Zaurus, I'm gonna have a big problem looking around for such. :( But fortunatly there are lots of apps for Linux and maybe such would be supported. If there were more users, there would be more applications to go around. Fortunatly, the Zaurus community is great.

When I was thinking about getting this unit, I did some research. My prior post was based on this review. I found it to be one of the most thought out for the c1000/c3000 series. Here's the link to that (of course, bear in mind that the review is several month old):

I know all that--about the support & all. That's what made me hesistant. Not knowing where he got it from. As mentioned beforehand, I was thinking about getting it, though. I have 2 laptops (kinda) And I haven't really touched (except transferring files to my Istation I2 & MRobe500) it, since I got the UX50. It's like a mini laptop. BTW, I didn't know the Zaurus had a handstrap. One thing I hate about Palms is that they don't have any protection on them. So they can fall if your hand is hit. My UX has been saved multiple times JUST by the handstrap. Its one of the things every handheld should be required to have.

As far as hacks are concerned, it seems that most people "compile" there softs in Linux for the Zaurus. I'm a complete newbie and don't understand everything yet, but I haven't seen anything like the picsel browser hack here on this board or the flash player hack on the treocentral forum.
I wish I could get that browser to work on my zaurus, (I'm talking about the one I found here). It works beautifully on my Zire 72.
The Picsel browser on that SD card costs about $160.00 to $180.00 depending on exchange rate at time of purchase.

After reading the OE forums for over 3 months now, Legodude, You made the right choice, especially if you considered a C3000.
The C1000 has 128mb of flash, same as the C3100. The C3000 only has 16mb of flash. If you noticed on the forums, people with the C3000 have a lot fewer choices as to "Flashing" different ROMS. The C3000 needs to "store" the flash image, (kernal, ect) on the hard drive. Whereas the C3100 & C1000 stores this vital code in Flash.
I also noticed more C3000's are for sale in the "buy/sell" section of the forum.

Thats's so odd. I know everyone has diff taste but, I would have stuck with either C1000, or buy C3100 instead--unless the 1gb for SD is still the limitation? (I know you can upgrade CF cards too. But I would rather put wireless/bluetooth, if I had the choice). Well, a good buy for you :) If you don't mind, how much was it?
Visually, the basic diff between the C1000 & C3100 is the color cover (not incl the wirelss remote, I think).

Nokia 770 is nice but won't do what I need it to do. Besides, it preforms better :p

Talking about being broke, I just ordered Picsel Browser on that SD card.
With shipping it totals to $190. That's the most expensive piece of software I've bought since I bought the full CorelDraw 5.0 suite, 7 years ago.
I have the upgrade for it already downloaded, but it needs the SD card to work.

Dragonsgames, I haven't recieved it yet. I spent a ton of time googling and looking for alternatives..... Several people on the forum have it, but I think some of them got it through their work. It's supposed to be a lot better than the 'palm' version according to some. I think it should be a lot less, say maybe double the "Proviewer" thats being released soon. I think the price is so high because it's only sold in Japan. StreamlineCPUs is ordering one for me, they didn't carry it in their regular inventory. Conics may be 10 - 15 dollars cheaper, but I don't have method to pay them, they are overseas. I have noticed a lot of 'Z' things, including the PDAs have risen in price since I bought my C3100. Must be the exchange rate. The C3100 is $50 more now that when I got mine 3 weeks ago.
I don't know if you already saw this, but here's a thorough review done by a guy at OESF.

My friend's girlfriend happens to have a dead 4gb iPod Mini. So I'm gonna take the 4gb Microdrive out of it and put it in my Zaurus :) If it works, I'll give her $25.
Ok. $330 for Sharp Zaurus SL-C1000 + $25 for CF 802.11b wifi card + $25 4gb microdrive = $380. Add Linux, priceless 8)
:D 1gb SD card from my Palm + 4gb Microdrive[HDD] + 128mb flash = 5.1gb. :P
Even better, my tax return was $304.

You got tax return?? Your not even 18. I noticed that there is a little lag in opening, closing, and screen rotation. Does that affect the overall performance of the device? Have you used the TX? Is it better/worse than that. I consider the SL-C1000 a close comparison to the TX as the LD is to the SL-C3100. What do you like about your Zaurus more so than Palm in general. What do you dislike?

JAmerican I worked last year. And I got a refund.
 My uncle is an accountant. I'm 16. My mom did that stuff ;)
Anyway, there is some lag to the Zaurus but I really think it is worth it for what it can do overall. Think about the LifeDrive, it will lag doing such simple tasks, the Zaurus can do so much more with very robust apps, VGA, and more like desktop programmes but easy to use and navigate on the Zaurus. PIM apps can be directly accessed from keyboard so time to open those up will be a bit faster. I'll put in times in my review, it took about 6-7 seconds to open up Calender app from the starting postion of 'off.'
It takes 3 seconds to get it from landscape to portrait, and just 2 or less to go from portrait to landscape. And rotating a second time is faster than the first.
On a side note, just closing the lid will turn the device off automatically which adds convience if I gotta go quick.[except in mp3 player of course, this will turn LCD off and continue playing]
Another thing I love about my Zaurus, it's digitiser. It is very responsive. I can open up the calculator programme and just use my finger like a real hard button calculator. Any Palm OS device I had couldn't do this or it could be not very well. And I still got the original OEM screen protector on it. So in chemisty class while doing a lab[and a test later], I just pulled out my Zaurus, rotated to tablet mode and started tapping on the Calculator app with ease. I <3 this so much! And I don't have to push hard, it is very responsive to my fingers :)

I actually did that with my UX and PowerOne Graph. :) Using Portrait. Very nice indeed. That's before I had a TI-84 Silver. One thing I hate about my Palm is that I can't code and test at the same time. I bet you can do that on the Zaurus. You can even do it on a TI calc. Wonder why you can't do it on the Palm itself.

Legodude, you probably already know this. To launch PIM apps, or other Apps, very quickly, you can enable "Fastload". It launches the programs a lot faster, (from memory).
To enable Fastload, just hold your stylus on the program's icon for a short time. A settings dialog will come up. This is where you can enable Fastload, and "Root privileges" in other programs. This dialog also lets you run older programs designed for Portrait style Zauruses with smaller screens. In these programs this selection will be selected: ["Display with magnified screen"] Unselect this setting to use these programs on the clamshell models.
BTW "Fastload" consumes memory. You decide if you want to use it or not.

I'm not talking about using both at one time. I'm talking about just having both available on one card so less likely to loose a wirless card while the other is in your device. Oh well. That's sick. I may just get this instead of a laptop for school. :) Then get a mini PC for my dorm room. That way I type up on the Zaurus and sync up to transfer data :). What you guys think. Nice combo. Plus its cheaper. I personally have come to hate laptops due to their overpriced, underfeatured nature I can get a GREAT custom-built desktop PC for ~$1000 while I can get an entry level laptop for the same price. Also, if a laptop breaks or drops, you have to send it in to fix it unlike a desktop which you can fix on your own. Lego and others, does the Zaurus feel like the full-fledged laptop? Tell me the applications in which you use to do the following...
Videos (Streaming & what filetypes), Music (Streaming & what filetypes), Picture viewing, PIMs, Web Browsing, Documenting/Editing (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF viewing), Wireless/BT/Ethernet Options, Emulation (Games, SNES Emulators), Utilities that make using the Zaurus much more worth while, Overclocking?
Before Lego you said video viewing on the Zaurus was not that great. Tell me, why do you say that. Could you record a 30fps playing on your Zaurus and post it at Google Video?
Thanks guys. I may switch to a Zaurus due to the stability and much more usable keyboard. Also, its much cheaper than a laptop.
The more I think about it, the more I want it.

I'm getting Picsel browser. It should be here tomorrow, according to tracking info. It's overly priced. I'll post the results once I have it in my Zaurus.
Hancom word allows you to write/edit/save MS word documents. It's not as full featured as a desktop wordprocessor, and there are alternatives.
Hancom sheet works with Excel files, but I haven't used it because it won't open a karaoke song database that I have, which is 21,000 rows. (I use CSVview for that)
I also got a GPS CF card. I'm going to use a combination of zroadmap and qpeGPS.
Zroadmap uses Bureau of Cenus USA vector maps. These can be downloaded for free.
qpeGPS uses raster maps that you can download also for free.

I'll tell you what I know.
1. Videos - (Streaming & what filetypes) I don't know about streaming, there is a post about it at OESF. Cacko ROM is your best bet because the kino2 frontend for mplayer plays most video formats. Cacko ROM has an optimized library with a newer kernel, that is supposed to improve movie playback. I haven't encoded any videos yet for 640x480. And your'e best to encode at 640x480, because smaller size videos are said to use extra processing to scale up to 640x480.
2. Music - (Streaming & what filetypes) Again, I don't know about streaming. There is a default music player that plays mp3, wav, (and ogg if you get library).
3. Picture viewing - There are a number of apps for viewing, & editing images. If you want all the image formats, you'll have to get several packages/programs. (most all free of course).
4. PIMs - I don't use them. Default Sharp ROM & Cacko ROM have address, todo, & calendar. Be forewarned though, synching can be difficult, but is possible.
5. Web Browsing - Again, Cacko ROM, I don't know about Sharp ROM. Netfront 3.1 & Opera 7.25 I don't surf on my 'Z', but most seem to prefer Opera. I use Netfront for reading offline saved pages from my desktop box.
pdaXrom includes Firefox, if you decide to use this ROM. pdaXrom is more like a full linux desktop.
6. (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF viewing) - I mentioned what I know above in my last post. I have never used DocsToGo on my Zire 72, so I cannot compare it to Hancom word or sheet.
7. Wireless/BT/Ethernet Options - CF cards, both WIFI & Bluetooth cards. there are numerous cards that work. Make sure to read the forums and find the "Compatable" list before purchasing a CF or BT card.
Ethernet, not sure, but I have read that it's pretty much plug&play with correct card, serial cable, or usb to serial cable.
8. Emulation (Games, SNES Emulators) - there are several of these, and there is a new PSP emulator in the works. I've tried the following. NES, SNES, Turbografx. All seem to work with their own quirks, setup issues. Need to learn keyboard controls, or get a compatable joystick to plugin to USB host.
9. Utilities that make using the Zaurus much more worth while - Many, that's up to you. there are lots of utilities, filemanagers, ect. Cacko ROM comes with a slew of utilities.
10. Overclocking - Again Cacko with newer kernel. battery applet has 3 high and 3 lower overclocking features. I've not used them, but are said to be stable and people seem happy with these settings.
I hope this answers some of your questions,
Jon

Why not a C1000? Its the same than C3100 or C3200 but without hard disk, and being SD or CF so cheap nowadays ...
Yes, the C1000 is an option. Though I do like the idea of the HD
I don't lie de HD idea so much
SD or CF are uite chep now and are faster than HD and use less power than HD
So IMHO an C1000 is a better device

I'd want internal Microdrive because I use my CF slot for the wifi card.
But you can use SD for memory, can't you?
At least Zaurus have 2 slots: SD & CF, but I can't understand why they have no WiFi nor BT included
I'm thinking about buying a Zaurus C1000, I've a Clie UX50 and of course I love clamshell design
So, any difference in screen brightness? I read somewhere that the 3200 has a brighter screen.
What is the real color of the C1000? Hard to tell in pics.

Tell me how you like it cuz im thinkin of buying it. What are your primary uses?
PIM functions, photos, database, games. Will eventually use a 56K modem for internet/e-mail. Some music, but prefer to use a Samsung K5 for that.
Anyone know what size SD/CF cards can be used on the C1000 series?
AFAIK C1000 can use up to 1 GB SD card and more in CF
But thre is a freeware patch tthat allows 2 or 4 GB SD cards
http://www.pulster.de/info/speicher/sd/zaurus-sd-driver-update.zip
How easy is it to add the patch? I'm thinking I may just get a 1GB SD card for now. What happened to all the Zaurus owners?
Anyone flash with Cacko ROM? Looking for detail instructions for doing this.

it is very easy to install the patch, just fallow the read me file.
1. make a safty backup
2. remove any SD / CF card
3. install IPK package
4. reboot
for the most part all programs are easy to install, just run the install manager.
I just reflashed my zaurus to cacko rom. I just fallowed the instructions on this post. http://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=15820&hl=cacko
Thanks! Ended up buying this case for the C1000, http://www.maxpedition.com/product/product_m5.htm
Has room for C1000 and lots of extras.
It arrived! Pics here:

Nice. I like the M5 case, it is much better then that one I am using. looks cool.
I really like the form factor--larger swival touch screen with mini keyboard. Wished it came with built-in wifi though. Add a camera, and I can replace my Zire 72 as an all-in-one mobile device.
But why isn't it marketed in the US?

I'm a recent C3100 owner myself. I did have the choice of getting the C3200, but I don't like the all-silver color. Also, the person I bought it from offered lots of accessories, so I feel it was a good deal. One of the easiest PDA's that I have had to use, just a lot of trial & error in learning how to use it. I am still using my Sony TH55 mostly for some programs that I have not found the equlivlent in the Zaurus.

Do you use your Zaurus or TH55 more? I'm looking into gettin either a Zaurus, TH55, or a T|X. If anyone has any opinions on what to get feel free to post.

I tend to use the Zaurus more, and only the TH55 for a couple of programs that I haven't been able tind for the Zaurus. The Zaurus is far better for websurfing, as a music player, and playing video the TH55. Actually, I will end up giving my TH55 to my other half for her appointments just to get her away from her dang paper organizers, gawd I hate those daytimers! Seriously, it is worth investing in getting a Zaurus if you have need for a top-notch PDA.

I only had a problem finding a Bible reader program for my zaurus. I did find one after a while, but it doesn't work the same, so it took some getting used to. other then that I have been able to find a program to do everything else.
if you can't find a program that you are looking for, tell me what the program does, and I will see if I can find it.

I don't think so, there are a few apps that I have not been able to find, but everything else I have been able to find an equlivlent. I find with the apps out there for the Zaurus, you are able to do a lot more than any Palm or PPC OS counterparts. Also, about 90% of the apps are free.

Well.. in regards to the topic of the thread...
I left the Palm OS too, some time ago... Gee, no surpirse there. The Palm platform was looking very stagnant and the last thing I wanted was to be stuck with a dead platform wishing for better days, much like old Newton users did for years. Funny how history is repeating it's self here at 1src.
Though in an odd turn of fate.. I recently did purchase my very first Palm device.
I am a happy owner of the Palm Treo 700wx.

How do you "leave" the Palm OS before you even purchased your "very first Palm device"??!

Yeah, that's a bit confusing. :)
I'm on Symbian now for me Nokia phone. It's like a cross between the better parts of Palm and PPC. it's the first phone I've ever bought that can run an SNES emulator. :o
I certainly hope Apple has something in the works. Palm has swayed me a way. :(

Pretty much, there's almost nothing it can't do. Just wondering when Sharp is coming with some new models.

He probably had several PalmOS devices, but never had an actual "Palm" hardware device.
He was commenting on the fact that after years of using PalmOS devices (Handspring, Sony, Handera, Whatever) he finally got a Palm device, and it had Windows as the OS.

Not quite, it is a temporary cooling off period to investigate some issues about another member who has a grudge against me.
BTW, on my honest auction, it is in the last 5 hours, and doing well. I'm hoping to have some funds for a nice xmas, been a bad year personally.

Yes, I agree and let others see for themselves what the real issue is. BTW, only temporarily "banned" till Brighthand does their own fair unbiased investigation.

Lets just leave the situation alone so the mods don't have to get involved. I say just know the facts and judge yourself.

Ummm... we have a 1src.com/classifieds area. Let the members/visitors decide on their own if they want your "TH55" in your "friend's" store rather than annoy them about it in your posts.

Sorry, if I left posts of the auction in this thread by mistake. BTW the TH55 has been sold. Lets get this topic back on track as a place where some of us have had to leave or suppliment the Palm OS with Linux on the Zaurus, thanks.
I really hope the winner would get his TH55 without problems.
To the winner, if you happen to visit here, please let us know about your experience.
