How I surf with my clie using adhoc, a wifi laptop, and AOL dialup

First off many thanks to all the users of this forums for their help with this subject. And second I would like to say I am in no way an expert in networks or configuring computers!! This method was found through trial and error and lots of long frustrating nights.

I finally got this to work with my AOL dialup, a Sony laptop with built in wifi, and my clie.

You will need a copy of PPPshar lite http://www.pppindia.com/intl/pppshar. download, install and follow the instructions to setup your ip address.

Clie Settings:

IP: 192.168.0.3
Sub:255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.2

DNS: 192.161.0.2

I found that if I don't enter a dns I was unable to connect to anything.

Laptop Settings:
Internet Sharing was enabled on the wifi adapter.

You can find your ip settings for your computer using the run command in the start bar of xp by typing in cmd /k ipconfig

wifi card;

IP: 192.168.0.2
Sub: 255.255.255.0

Make sure that in your wifi network settings under TCP/IP you select properties and assign the ip and sub. listed above this sentence. Now you need to click advanced on the wifi adapter screen, and press the settings button at the bottom right corner and select web server from the list, then press edit and enter your gate way IP listed under the PPP adapter with the cmd /k ipconfig command.

I use Pocket Link II, so this may vary depending on what you use. Under options/network select UseProxy and enter in 192.168.0.2 and use port 81.

If you have done all of this correctly and enabled PPPshar Lite you should be able to browse the internet with your Clie!! I will be posting detailed instructions with pictures on my website in the near future.

Note: I have not been able to use clie mail, or Avantgo with these settings and I will be looking into this later when I have time.

n2ifp,

Where did you obtain the DNS number you used? I'm trying to connect to my peer to peer home network with internet sharing active. When I run cmd /k ipconfig I get IP addresses but no DNS. I can only presume that is the problem. I'm using the Sony Mobile Connection Wizard and it tells me I am connected however I cannot connect with the web using Netfront or Hotsync through the network. One day of trying with no success. I have connected several laptops to the network with no problem but my Clie is driving me to distraction.

Larry, I just want to clarify something. Here in England I have AOL broadband, and I'm looking to get a wireless router to work with my Wi-Fi Vaio laptop. Everywhere I look, I get conflicting advice as to whether or not AOL will work with a wireless router. Your views please. (Apologies for going off-topic!)

If you have your broadband modem plugged into a router all you need is an Access Point, if the modem is plugged into your PC directly, then you need a wireless router. It shouldn't matter who your provider is, just plug your modem into a wireless router or router into an AP and you should be fine.

An ISP shouldn't but it does, especially AOL DSL, I know of no one who ever got it to work. If you know anything different, please tell me.

Really? I did not know that, I've been on attbi/road runner/comcast and it's never been supported, but relatively easy to set up. I apologize for spreading misinformation.

No problem! I have Comcast cable too. AOL has all this off the wall stuff that makes it very difficult. Even one of the Cliesource Moderators dumped AOL DSL for Verizon. The main problem is what numbers to plug in. Also some WAP/Routers seem to work better in the setup than others. It definitely can be a hair pulling time for some :) Others just slap it together and off they go and not even break a sweat!
