View Full Version : MP3 playback sucks

Sony should REALLY set some standards for themselves.
1) All devices with a minijack audio out made by us will have the full 4 contact remote port, even if the device doesn't COME with a remote.
2) Remotes will be able to be bought in stores along with our headphones. They will all be as compatable and standard as headphones.
By the way by 4 port I meant the way that sony remotes have 2 or 4 contacts, the 2 being button only remotes the 4 having the addition of a screen. 2 contact remotes are compatable with the 4 contact ports.
MP3 playing on a daily basis is impossible with the TG50. I find myself turing the backlight off and not putting the device on hold so I at least have volume (the jogdail).
I would kill for a remote then I remember I have an iPod! So that's what I bought that for!

The MP3 playback capabilities are one reason why I moved to the NX70V to get the inline remote.

Why would sony not include remotes??? I don't get big companies like this. This is as bad as not including the headphones in the first place.
Funny, I always prefer that companies *not* include headphones. With some rare exceptions (iPod), the included headphones are worthless; greatly inferior to what you would purchase on your own.
On the other hand, I agree that the 4-pin remote standard would be helpful, and I do think it makes sense to include the in-line remote. Just not the headphones themselves.

I don't use the mp3 function more than just for the novelty of occasionally firing up a tune in those rare occurances that I am not at my desk, my car or my house. I do miss the inline remote though and I was thinking that their must be a hack out there that uses the jog dial, back button and rec button to mimic the functions of the remote. Has anyone seen something like this. If not it would be great if someone developed it. I would pay $5 for something like that. Sony should have included this feature in the audio player.

I think the jog dail is electrically cut off by the hold switch, so I doubt any hack could be made.

Ummm, I hate to be a kill-joy, but ... While I won't comment on the mechanics you've mentioned, the bottom-line reality is that, after using a PocketPC and a Zaurus 5500, the Tg50 mp3 sound-- with headphones-- is astounding. I thoroughly appreciate the ability to have MP3s playing in background mode, while working on a PDA doc-- or alternatively, turning it off for all purposes except music play via the Hold doohickey. To have that superbly qualitative level of sound, WITH optional voice-recording capabilities, AND doc editing, etc. in one device, is a mind-blower. Maybe it's the Sony headphones I bought, but the sound itself is killer. Just my 2 cents worth.

I agree the lack of an inline remote is unfortunate but if you really want to use your tg as an mp3 player why don't you turn your volume to max turn on the hold button and buy a headset that has a built in volume control

Bingo! That's what forced me to brick & mortar stores-- wanted to SEE the headset's built-in volume control wheel prior to purchase. Guess that's why the whole remote stuff means nadda to me, from a practical perspective.

I didn't mean sound quality, where did you get that?
And what is the point of buying volume headphones when they can't change songs? That's the main thing.
And I thought about it, if the hold DIDN'T cut off the buttons, you could have:
rec-previous track/reverse
jog up-louder
jog press-pause/play
jog down-quieter
back-next tract/forward

I think the poster (TreoRenegade) might have been more influenced by the title of this thread than your initial post.
The thread is titled "MP3 playback sucks", and both he and I would beg to differ -- IMO it sounds great and playback works reasonably well for my purposes.
I think the thread is just badly titled: Your disdain appears to stem from Sony's failure to include an inline, track-changing set of headphones or remote, and you are unhappy with the mechanics/features of the playback software. Whether that constitutes "sucking" is a matter of opinion, and I'm glad you voiced yours!

Well I know sony makes a few earbuds that have a volume control built into the line....but I'm not sure about the self retracting cord idea.
