I am nearly in tears with desperation to hotsync my poor ux to my new notebook computer, but palm desktop won't install despite my having the original ux clie installation CD.

1. i have the original CD and want to install the ux version so the Clie desktop can overwrite the corrupted "system" folders on my ux (the corrupted files on my UX increase daily! I get a soft reset error whenever I try to use the clie camera or whenever i press hardbutton 2 etc etc I really need to reinstall the whole PDA but first I have to be able to hotsync)

2. The installation hangs, has a hard time cancelling, and then if i try to remove the (not-completely installed) Palm Desktop program from Control Panel Add/Remove programs, it can't remove it. If I try completing the installation, the error message I get is:

1607: unable to install scripting runtime

A Google search reveals lots of suggestions for editing my registry
But editing the registry sounds drastic and scary  :o :(

ANY advice?!?

I haven't been able to hotsync ever since I got my new notebook (& disposed of my old notebook) and am desperate to hotsync !

- Computer: Windows XP pro, service pack 2,
- (Software) Palm desktop installation cd: original installation cd-rom for peg-ux40 and ux50

edit: I reformatted my notebook hard-drive with a newer version of Microsoft XP, SP2 after gettting hotsync errors using my old XP (where my pda was recognized as a usb device instead of hotsync starting up). I had posted last week on ux being recognized as a usb device, and this week, i can't even get to that stage since desktop won't install. annngggg.

please help...

I think I did it (downloading an old edition of install shield and editing the registry permissions for installshield )
But I still get a hang at the very end ... i am afraid to cancel the installation, but at least (by alt-tabbing to the desktop) I can see that I do have palm desktop again...

For more computer-saavy folks who have this same problem, I used the method as in this link :
as in: http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q108340

p.s. I had already tried a bunch of other alternatives (including using the Windows Install Cleanup from Microsoft) but this is the one that got me furthest (install won't quit, but it has already deleted temp/backup files and there's a Palm Desktop alias on my computer desktop) Good luck to other folks who get a brand new win xp sp2!

I have had this problem on non-SP2 machines for no apparent reason. I can't even remember managing to fix it. Ever. :(

I Like My UX50!

Looks like you win some & lose some. Personally, I dislike SP2 pack. But I am glad that my CPU is fine with UX50.

I have mRobe-500i & Istation-i2, & I can't get both of the devices to work on my SP2 units--laptop & desktop. The CPUs just don't recognize the devices. They only work on mom's laptop (and good kid I am, thus borrowing it 100% :p ), & dad's desktop which are both SP1.

I've held off installing SP2 at home after seeing the damage wreaked by my previous boss on the company network when he rolled it out on the day of release!

Bleah..now that I have backed up my ux50 in preparation for sending it in for repairs, and am going to install the fallback pda (nx80) palmdesktop version, the ux palmdesktop won't let itself get removed (hangs on the remove from the control panel)

agh~ how do all you folks using win xp sp2 survive??!??
