Hi-Res DiddleBug:
This is a modification of the greatest sticky-note software for PalmOS - DiddleBug (v2.15). The main goal of this edition is to get benefits of the High Resolution mode (320x320 pixels) of Sony Clie devices. So draw, save, restore and all - in high-res!
The program uses its own CreatorId and its own database so you can have both the classic version of DiddleBug and DiddleBugHR on the same device.
Sorry, no Tungsten High-Density support at the moment, only Clie devices

Looks good but I see no alarm pref. Is there a way to choose alarms?

May I first say... HALLELUJAH!!
Second, I'd be even happier if it were based on the improvements available in Db 2.60, but beggars can't be choosers.
Sweet, sweet, sweet. What a way to end of a Friday.

Yes, the HR is NICCCEEEE!!! But I do miss some of the v2.60 features, e.g. New sketch on startup.

Alarms crash pretty consistently on my SJ30 (OS 4.1). Bummer. I hope they get it fixed. I think I can live without all the frills of 2.6.

... after some testing.... the crashes seem to be dependent on what app you're in when the alarm dialog pops up. If it's hi-res I get a crash. If it is a "normal" app (IE the std Todo app) everything seems to work well. YMMV.
Fix that and add some alarm configuration and it's a keeper.

LanMan - the existing Diddlebug is a Public Freeware app at SourceForge, which means it is a group development project at:
http://diddlebug.sourceforge.net
Why don't you take the 2.60 source code and add HiRes to that, and resubmit your changes to the site?

Real pity that it dosen't support SnapperMail like the 2.6 version....damn!!!

Re: the alarm problems, I seem to recall that pputzer had a number of problems getting alarms correct before he reached v. 2.60. Perhaps there are fixes to be found in his CVS?

That's why I am saying that this HR code should be part of the Diddlebug project, rather than using old code.
The 2.60 is avaiable to download by anyone for free at the link I posted above, and the current developer who is donating his time would probably be happy to have someone add code with new capabilities (like 320x320).

Based on his other comments, I don't think LanMan is the author of this; he's just another psyched user, and the first to let everyone else know about it.
I'll send an email to the author and point him over to this thread.
editEmail sent, his web page is a .ru, so he is probably Russian. I hope his English is OK, since mine is limited to Bullwinkle :D

I received the following response from Max Vlasov, the author (reposted with his permission):
Thank you for the mail.
I will try to describe why I started from v2.15.
I like the Peter Putzer activity in further DiddleBug development. But there are things that makes the inheritance from the existing version (2.60) is not acceptable.
As you may know GPL is a great concept with some limitations. When a new project starts from a point all the bugs becomes double so the develpers have to synchronize it. Peter uses a very quick style of programming. His betas came out very often, without deep testing. I know the beta status is indended to be unstable, but current version has no such status while keeping to come out quickly. One of examples is text descriptions he had added. As a programmer I saw no reasons for the garbage to appear, there are always ways for a developer to initialize memory blocks by zeros. So all this I say just to note that he has his rights for this style and I don't want to complain. Thanks to GPL License I always can start with the version I trust. v2.15 is a version that was tested by years, at the moment it exists on palmgear.com and continue to work properly on monochrome devices. Moreover, it is small and DiddleBugHR is almost as small as DiddleBug 2.15 is. The alarm bug is likely my own bug and in a couple of days it will be fixed.
So this is my opinion and I hope you'll see my reasons.
Thank you for your good words.
Max

Dear Clie funs!
It seems that I've fixed the alarm bug, but I need an extra testing from you. Please check the version at http://maksee.narod.ru/palm/dbhr/dbhr1_1.zip and let me know how it works (max_vlasov@yahoo.com). It is a smalll zip containing only prc. At the moment if an alarm comes when a low-res app active, it will shown as a downscale version of original sketch.
Thank you in advance
Max

Wow! dbhr1_1.zip works great! Alarm scaled down properly when in a low-res app. PLUS, the 1.0 version would crash whenever I tried to exit the app (NR70V) that no longer happens! Woo Hoo!

My main problem is that WindleBug is not going to display the DiddlebugHR notes on my desktop PC, so there is still no HR or HR+ note program with a Windows Viewer.
So, back to Diddlebug 2.60 .

So far the new version works great and is more reliable when sketching than the 2.60v.

thanks to all for the testing.
kstuart, as the developer of both applications (WindleBug and DiddleBugHR) I can tell that there will be 320x320 support in WindleBug. I need to add a convinent way to choose the base since WindleBug 1.0 finds the base automatically, but now the user should choose between two variants.

It's would be so cool to be able to seamesly send DiddleBugHR doc's via email.... you do know, like with V 2.60 of DiddleBug....

Could one use the plugins from DiddleBug v2.60 with DiddleBugHR? The v2.60 file has a lot more plugins than the HR one does, and I'd like to use some of the additional ones.

I will try research the plug-in issue. Looks like all the plug-ins that simply transfers text through the Transfer menu should work ok. If Peter adds a new functionality there may be an incompatibility.
By the way the analysis may be done by a different person since both sources packages are available. I can't make all the things, I need to support ReadThemAll also and (imagine!) to work sometimes :-)

Max, Thanks for creating DiddlebugHR (&Windlebug too!). Regarding Windlebug, why not create an independent WindlebugHR program? I'm assuming here, but I think most users will install one or the other, not both. Same for the Windows component.

I left all my 2.6 plugins installed, and they all work with DBHR. YMMV.

320x480 support (ie 50% more space in a note) that was also supported in WindleBug would be the "Holy Grail" for me in notes.

I don't know how much work it would be, but any chance you could add color to the program as well? That and HiRes+ support would make it perfect. It great as it is.

Can anybody else duplicate it?:(
I get fatal exceptions on alarms in Zlauncher...

Color would significantly add to the size of the DB data file. I'd prefer it to stay B&W, since I see it as just a scribble pad, not a drawing program. IMHO.

Thanks, notmuch. I went and instaleld the 2.26 plugins along with DiddleBugHR and it also worked for me.
maksee, I'm very much looking forward to see your HiRes version of DiddleSnap Hack. Right now if I take a screenshot of HiRes images, both 2.6 or 2.15 version would display the LowRes version which looks like someone splash black ink on my screen (in-compherensable bunch of scattered dots) or just display white screen. :(

- WindleBugHR is a good suggestion.
- I will try to see what I could do with DiddleSnap.
- 2 members who reported alarm problem after my beta posting: please confirm the problem was with 1.1b version and let me know the device name.
Sorry if not all are commented, feel free to repost on the e-mail

I'm using 1.1b on a NX w/ OS5 & ZLauncher. I've also tested the alarms in PalmReader with ZL 'off' and it still happens.
THanks for all your work on this! ;)
Since you guys mentioned it, I tried the 1.1b and the alarm crashed my N760C too. I use MegaLauncher 4.3.
I have no problem with 2.60 even with GeekSound. It played 'AirWolf' rather than the default beep-beep sound.
Max, can you use the 2.6 version's alarm?
I like doodling and am curious on how my doodling looks on various drawing apps like this app, DiddleBug 2.60, NotePad, CLIEMemo, CLIEPaint, and MemoRu!. Although the last two have more drawing capabilities, as far as dooling, DiddleBugHR is the easiest and smoothest method, hence, has better look than the rest. Now if it can be in color that woud be even better! Below are examples of my doodles:
1. DiddleBugHR (http://www.cliesource.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=444)
2. DiddleBug 2.60 (http://www.cliesource.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=445)
3. NotePad 1.7 (http://www.cliesource.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=446)
4. CLIEMemo 1.0 (http://www.cliesource.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=447)

Does it turn out to be a 16 bit resolution problem? Or in other words can you reproduce the alarm bug when the current application is in 8 bit resolution mode?
It may be easier for me to solve the problem if it cause when a standard application is active. If so I will be able to repeat it on the emulator
DanT, nice comparision!

Max,
I'm not sure if 16 bit color has anything to do with it. I put MegaLauncher (ML) color & skin setup to 8 bit color, used the default build-in skin, and still got the rapid flashing of "System Crash" display. I use Crash Hack to display "System Crash" whenever the system goes to "Fatal Exception" so I can go to CrashLog and identify which app has caused the system to crash. The detail message in the CrashLog said that the crash was caused by error "Fatal Exception" while running "DiddelBugHR".
One thing different for this crash in comparison to typical crashes that is the rapid flashing of the "System Crash" message on the screen. A typical crash will display "System Crash" (constant display, not flashing) for a set amount of time (mine is set for 10 seconds) then it will automatically reset the system for me, without the need to poke the hole in the back. The DiddleBugHR crash shows rapid flashing which disable the Crash Hack to reset and forces me to poke the hole in the back. Fortunately a soft reset is all it needs to bring the system back to normal.
FYI, DiddleBug 2.60 alarm works fine with ML 16 bit color and background.
