There is a mountion of threads on almost every WLAN conceivable setup. Much has been written. The new Sony WL100 driver may help considerably.

This should keep one busy for awhile... Enjoy :)!

If DHCP and Auto Settings don't work, please see below.

Router:

DHCP
Long Preamble The latest WL100 driver will handle Short Preamble too.
Network Shared
AP Mode = Access Point

In the Clie:

SSID = is case sensitive.

WEP KEY = HEX key only, Hex entered manually, especially with Linksys! ! !
(found that on the Linksys site) No Paraphrase, use Hex Key settings from router.

Infrastructure Mode

Under Advanced setup:

Clie = all settings manual, especially with Linksys! ! !
(IP, Subnet mask, Gateway, DNS, and PowerSaveMode unchecked)

This is for a straight Cable Modem Setup and using Windows XP.

There are many variations, depending on internet connection type (DSL, Cable, Dialup), your Internet Service Provider, and the desktop computer operating system. The Gateway and DNS addressing is connection type specific. Running 54G requires mixed mode operation. Always check for the latest firmware download. Dial-up's may require bridging or ICS.

For Windows XP ICF Firewall, use service port 14238 for WiFi HotSync.

Have you used Sony's network wizard and have you installed the latest WL100 driver?

Below was authored by mjhamilton

can you do the following 2 things after opening 'Prefs' then 'Network' and hit connect.

1 - Pull Down menu, 'Options/Log'... type ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx where the x's represent the IP address of your router/gateway. Then hit return on the keypad (not done)... you should now see some text go by... does the IP address respond?.. if not then there may be an issue with WEP security or DHCP from your gateway!!.... one point to note.. if you are using WEP security on a Netgear router you have the chance to use 1 of 4 keys... the CLIE will only work if you choose key 1!!

2 - if the above works then we need to test for DNS resolution. Go through the same process but this time select you favorite website name instead of IP address.. ie type 'ping www.yahoo.com/ and hit the return key on the keypad. Do you get a response??... if not then you will need to enter you DNS addresses manually into the CLIE WLAN setup.

Try these and let us know how you get on.... if they don't work then the next step will be to setup manual IP settings.... don't be fooled by the line that 'Connecting Wireless' when you hit the connect button, this will say connected even if the WEP key is wrong.....

Unfortunately the WLAN driver is very basic and a pain to troubleshoot

Example of a typical DSL setup:

LAN: (network side of router)
IP address: 192.168.2.1
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
DHCP Server: Enabled

WAN: (modem side of router)
IP address: 192.168.1.2 (this address was assigned to the router by the DSL modem)
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1 (this is the modem address)
DNS: 192.168.1.1
---------------------------------
The router should assign IP addresses as follows:
192.168.2.1 (router)
192.168.2.2 (first device address requested)
192.168.2.3 (second device address requested)
192.168.2.4 (third device address requested)
192.168.2.5 (forth device address requested)
and so on....

----------------------------------
Hubs are just basically repeaters. Any packet that comes in from one connection (port) is just repeated out all of the other connections. This wastes bandwidth, but is very cheap and needs no configuration. They just work.

Switches are "smart" hubs. They know what machines are connected to each connection. That way, when a packet comes in on one connection, it's only forwarded to the connection that leads to the machine the packet is destined for. This means that the switch must inspect every packet as it comes in, decode the destination address, and then forward it to the correct port. This means that switches have processors in them.

Routers "route" packets between two networks. It's like a switch in that the packet is only forwarded to the correct connection, but it also allows connecting two different networks.

What you want whenever you connect a home network to the Internet (via a cable modem, for example) is a router. The Internet is one network, and your home network is also a network. You'd like them to not get mixed together.

This has several advantages:

1) You can connect several PCs through one connection (share), without having to leave a PC on.

2) The router will provide a measure of protection from nasties on the Internet. The only device easily visible from the Internet side is your router.
3) Traffic from one of your machine to another of your machines will not be visible outside your network. It will stay within your local network. This is a major feature of routers.

In your case, I would suggest you replace your current hub with the Linksys device you asked about. The cable modem will plug into the "WAN" port, and your other machines will plug into the LAN ports, instead of into your current hub.

FYI: You can "daisy-chain" switches together if you need more than the four connections that the Linksys device provides. You can even use your current hub if necessary.

The only tricky thing might be that the location of your current hub might turn out to be a poor location for a wireless access point. You might end up with "dead" spots in your house if this new Linksys device ended up not being centrally location.

I believe that this will solve your problem, and your ISP will not have any way of knowing you have multiple computers attached.

Help - can't send email.

n21ifp, thanks for all the info you posted, however in initial seach I could not resolve my email problem. I'm a new vl100 owner after bought at BB sale.

I went to my local library, was was able to browse the internet find and also receive email. The probelm was with sending the email out. I tried with two differnt accounts using different smtp servers.

my email app of choise is Snapper mail, fortunitally it gives me communication log, here is relevant part of what shows up.
------
SMTP Rcpt To:command failed:550
relaying to
<someoneseaddress@anything.com>
Prohibited by administrator
------

Any ideas, I asked at the library and could not get much help, I have since called their hosting company and they gave me their smtp server address. Does anyone thing that will work (I'll know soon enough) and is that something that should be necessary? I thought all I should need from them was the SSID.

Thanks, dfg

Some details I forgot:

When I used exact same settings and instead put in BT memory stick and dialed up my ISP using cell phone the emails went through fine.

Back with the WIFI I also tried using cliemail instead of snapper and it did not go through.

Based on this info I'm assuming it just a settings problem on my part or some sort of limitation of this hotspot (vs. being a hardware or software issues)

n2ifp

You have to know the SMTP account to send. There might be other work arounds using sort of a proxy, but you will have to search for it in the forum.

Most ISP's close it down and limit to the one default SMTP account to help prevent spam.

Use the SMTP address they gave you.

As you found out, receive is usually not a problem.

Enjoy!

I expect the easy work around if I need to send and can't find the SMTP info woudl be to send from website like mail2web.com that works with I think most pop systems. And so I have a copy of it I can blind copy myself.

I have even setup a dummy email account named handheld@mydomain.com. When I send from my clie useing email client I still blind copy this as I never sync the email with computer.

I use snapper mail, to me the big selling point over clie mail is the ability to fetch only part of a message and then go back and get the rest if you want. When I'm using my BT in particular this stops one big email from stopping me from getting the rest of the emails.

Some helpful links: ......SNIP.......

Hey Larry,

Thanks for the great links on setting up the Sony WL100, they were extremely helpful. Setting up the Lan card to work with my Linksys wireless router was a breeze. I initially only made one mistake with my SSID: when I forgot that the address was case sensitive..............DOH!!!!

I looked at that for at least 10 minutes before I noticed the problem. I thought the hotsync lan setup was unnecessarily complex. It would have taken me days to figure that out without your infomation, instead it took me about 15 minutes, Thanks Larry.

This site has been a great resource in the short time I've been using it.

A couple of observations, the pocket pc wireless lan setup using a Dell Axim X5 and a linksysWCF12 was a magnitude less complex than on the palm, with no instructions (didn't bother to read the instructions in the box.) I was able to install the software, plug in the card, run a sniffer application that came with the wifi card that searched out my network and auto configured the software, less than 5 minutes for the whole thing. Also we need a landscape mode browser for the NX similar to Thunderhawk on the PPC.

http://www.bitstream.com/wireless/

On the plus side.........Browsing on the Clie NX is considerably faster than on my PPC using either Thunderhawk, or IE.

Again Larry, Thanks!

Just a quickie for anyone setting up a WL100 in a peer to peer config....
Dont believe the manual !!! It say you HAVE to specify an IP & Mask - not so. My system would not connect this way in an ad-hoc config, spent hours specifying & re-specifying addresses until I just thought .... i wonder .... and selected auto IP .......
connected first time ! might work for you if having probs

True, the issue depends on what equipment one is using. Some work with auto just fine and others don't. It doesn't hurt to try auto first, obviously that's the easiest way :)!

How fast is browsing via wifi card? And since I don't wanna start a Blazer vs Plucker vs whatever debate, can you gimme an idea of general speed of browsing?

Bottom line: If I have $200 to spend, should I buy 1gb CF card and the driver or should I give Sony (#$@^#$^!$^ their price-gouging butts!) the $150 for the Wifi card?

Thanks!

Search for 'sony pega 110' to find the card for $119.99. Then search for 'sony pega 100' for the $50 rebate coupon (good for either model.) The PEGA-WL100 is more expensive than the 110 at Amazon.

This was the best deal I found.

First, I don't believe the rebate expired 5/03. That's because I only got my NX on 5/4 and checked the rebate form and then bought the WL100 from eBay. BUT BEWARE: Many sellers on eBay are cutting out the UPC codes. I was lucky to find one for Buy It Now at $70 with the UPC. Most sellers say the UPC is missing, but I had one case where I bid on one and the guy told me via reply email that its missing. I would recommend emailing the seller before you bid to make sure UPC is there.

As for the rebate, I have it on a different computer and wouldnt mind emailing it to someone who could put it up on a ftp site or something. I dont know how to do that, but if someone can and does, private message me and I'll send you the form and you can post it for everyone else.

LOL!

For use in an open system where you don't know the parameters.

In network prefs

Select wireless LAN

Create a profile and give it any name you want.

SSID: leave blank or use "any" without the quotes.

WEP: leave blank also

Infrastructure Mode

Advanced setup: IP and DNS auto

PowerSaveMode: leave unchecked, very important! ! !

Then you'll have the Net Front experience, he-he :D!

At school you'll have to ask as there are many different setups. Some Starbucks may require subscribing to a version of T-Mobile.

Yes, the firewall can block it! Especially the built-into Win XP. Don't ask me what settings to use for the firewall, but you should be able to temporarily disable it to see if that's the problem

http://www.otakunozoku.com/wifihotsync/

There is one error in the above link, use LANSync, not local HotSync in the HotSync pulldown menu.

Remember to use the double exclamaition points for the Primary PC name, very important! Please see the example in the above link.

Once your up and running, leave the settings as is. The HotSync button should still work and if you tap on the HotSync Icon inside the app, you can even do a wireless HotSync while it's still in the cradle, if you so choose :)

Your Welcome!

I am glad to hear it. I can bring the link up instantly, oh well, it's a moot point. The other alternative was to leave the primary PC name blank, but every time you would want to HotSync, you would have to erase the primary PC name. I don't who or how the double !! was determined, as I believe it's a null that satisfies the driver.

How you do stop having to enter a different IP address if it changes for the PC that you are doing the Hotsync with?

Cheers

My PC's never change as I have them set statically. Main reason is I have both a wireless and wired Ethernet. This way it prevents clashes. When you HotSync via the cradle it should update the IP of the PC. Otherwise, you'll have to assign IP's manually.

n2ifp you seem to know a lot about everything so may be you can help me too.

I can connect my NX wirelessly (it is listed in my homeportal network with no name but just the IP address) but even if I think I have all the right settings for my e-mail client I can't send or receive mail. I haven't yet tried to do it non wirelessly. I have a dsl connection with SBC, I use Cliemail, any help would be highly appreciated, thanks

Have you used the SMTP and POP3 servers successfully before say on a PC? It may be the names have been entered in error or a firewall may be stopping it (if you are running behind it).

Can you ping the SMTP and POP3 servers from your handset? Can enter ping command via the Prefs -> Network -> View Log

Help, help help!

I finally managed to download Netfront in my Clie thanks to thread I found here. It seems I can connect to the to my home network but than I can't send or receive e-mail or surf the web. The little bars on the top right of the screen start moving but after a while I get an error message "network timeout" I think is the message if I recall right. Can anybody help me to resolve my problem? Any help would be highly apreciated, thanks

Sorry n2ifp I didn't read your message before because I didn't get an e-mail from Cliesource, anyway, now I also downloaded Netfront in my Clie and I seem not to be able to go on line because also netfront doesn't open any web pages, but I am connected to my home portal, I really don't understand!! The POP and SMTP settings are exactly the same that I put in my outlook express e-mail client and of course they work fine there so I don't think that could be the problem. I don't want to give up though, thanks for further suggestions

I'll try the ping thing and let you know SMTP and POP3 work on my PC, the router has a firewall but doesn't stop my mail from the PC so I don't think it can be that. I'll let you know, thanks

OK, I went in Network Log

Service name: blank
Local IP address: my Clie IP
Gateway address: my router IP
DNS address: blank

and than a little bit under there is the gateway address again

I figure it out and now it works!! I had a problem with the DNS server. Infact I tried to browse with an IP address insted of the www.etc.com and it worked, so I called my DSL service, they gave me the primasy e secondary DNS. I changed the DNS settings from auto to those that SBC gave me, I left IP in auto and also the save power box checked and now I can send and receive e-mail and browse. Thanks to everybody for your help.

I don't know if I can't follow instructions, have an incompatible router or have a faulty WiFi card. I found this board after several days of frustration, tried everything (I think) and still can't make it work.

I have the NZ90 and have a Motorala SBG1000, which includes a wired and wireless router (as well as cable modem, firewall, and you-name-it). I bought the WL110 before reading these boards. SonyStyle customer service assured me that the only difference was the addition of a status LED. FWIW I use a laptop with Windows 98SE and have a D-Link 650 wireless card.

Although I haven't found a control for AP mode, I have done all the other checkpoints and never get connected in infrastructure mode. The WL110 and NZ90 indicate a connection in adhoc mode, but the email and NetFront applications timeout when started.

Any more experience or advice would be appreciated.
Thanks, Phil

Hi,
As far as I now, the SONY WIFI Card only supports channels 1 to 11. If your Router scans ch. 12, 13 .. in the Infra mode, it will never connect. Set your Router to scan ch. 11. Also check your WEP and MAC Filter if they apply.

good luck

You can find the latest drivers here (NX)

http://www.ita.sel.sony.com/support/clie/nx70v/softupdates/

To check what driver you have installed go in the drop down menu, select App/Info and than select Version
there you''ll see what version of each software you have installed in your device you have.

ok.. have latest and greatest driver but cannot get a link to my Netgear DG824G router..... very strange..

I set the CLIE to DHCP and it say that the wireless connects but the network bit fails

I set the CLIE with a manual address and it connects but I can't do anything....

When you are connected can you 'ping' the CLIE ip address from a PC or via your gateway?.... I can't so I guess there is something well out here....

..anyone know if there is a way of selecting the key number for the encryption?... for example on my netgear router there are 4 keys to chose from and I have selected 3 as the default... on all other devices connection 3 is also set.....

... however on the CLIE there is no option to select the key.... does this mean that I can only use 1??

mjhamilton
06-05-2003, 04:43 PM
sorted... it would seem that my last statement was the right one..... I set the router to use key 1 instead of 3... no the CLIE connects, browses web and run MSN Messenger...

Superb...... only problem is that I no have to change the key on all my other device to 1 instead of 3.....

Certain left-wing democratic liberal users of ClieSource have annoyed me with their anti-bush stance. The same ones who thought Clinton was the greatest thing since sliced bread. The wag the dog crowd... where the past president bombed the asprin factory in Afghanistan to divert attention to the Monica Lewinski affair.

President Bush is not an animal, he is not a dictator, he is not a liar and so on. President Bush is a fine man who is trying to do his job, but the political left wingers are trying to tear him down. Clinton was scum, President Bush is nothing like him. Clinton was the one who personifide that it was okay to lie, cheat, steal, or whatever it takes. I feel that he single-handedly destroyed the moral fiber of my great country.

I can go on and on, but I think you'll get the point :)

It is interesting how that liberals - like me - can run into intelligent and good and kind conservatives who by their life and behavior earn a hearing from us.

I have a close friend who is conservative republican who is a good man - who is working with "retarded" (developmentally disabled) people at a low wage just because he wants to help people. I gotta listen to him, even though I see things differently - cause he is such a good guy.

My experience of N2IFP leads me to the same listening stance.

Yes, the whole thing at the bottom is the signature and yes I removed a portion of it.

I have my freedom of speech and the right to object too. I am tried of people trampling a good man that I admire! I think it despicable to trash one's leader in a world forum. If someone doesn't like one political party, that's fine, but ClieSource is not a political forum. The last time I looked, it was for Clies! I am not in the mood to go into a long tirade. I don't trash other governments here, but some from other places thinks it's okay to do it to us. To call my president a liar without facts is wrong too, just shows ignorance. I don't need or want it rubbed into my face!

Actually I thought it was interesting and not too "boorish" but I guess we should stay on topic like you said (I think you said this).

It is great to live in a country where one can dissent from the leader's views and still feel safe. I think the USA is a great country, even though I have big problems with a lot of what both Democrats and Republicans do.

I think the AE is 54G? If it is, are you running in mixed mode or 802.11b only?

Updates are not automatic, you can download the latest WL100 driver from Sony support or verify you have the latest. The Mobile Manager was basically to assist in setup.

Actually it does work with the Extreme but it will only work in 802.11b mode it will not work in the 802.11b/802.11g compatibility mode.

Hi Paul,

Glad to hear that your up and runnimh :)

There is Bluetooth memory sticks, where to get them though is something I haven't kept track of, but they do exist :)

Below is an old post I had found, maybe it will help you. Step 5 may not be applicable anymore.

OK here is how to set it up. I did this successfully with a Motorola T720 and Clie T615:

1) Get cable from thesupplynet.com.

2) Connect the cable tightly to your phone and your Clie.

3) Turn on Clie. Open Prefs. Go to connections and select "new". In name enter "Verizon" or whatever you want. Select: connect to PC via Cradle / Cable. Select "details". Set speed to 19,200 and flow ctl on. Click OK to exit.

4) Select Network. Under service write Verizon. User name qnc. Password qnc. Connection Verizon. Select Details. Select script. Settings are send: atdt#777, Send CR, Delay 4, End. Click OK to exit.

5)Turn on phone. Hit menu key and QUICKLY and rapidly hit 073887* - this step may take a few times. It will ask for a security code. Enter six zeroes (000000), which will appear as *'s. Go down to data rates and select 14.4/14.4.

6) Under system prefs, network, hit "connect" and you should be good to go.

WiFi works greataround the house, there are supposedly other places it can be used. There is the cellular phone option too.

Instructions below if you decide to go the modem route.

CF Modem Installation Instructions
Hello all,

I have been requested by our favorite Brazilian, Pelaca, to put together a step by step instruction set on getting a CF modem to properly function in an NX. Here goes.....

1. Obtain an NX (preferably via legal means)

2. Obtain a compatible modem. I use the AmbiCom which I purchased at Best Buy (click here)

3. Install the attached files contained on the two following posts. The first file (cfutils.zip) contains the Japanese version of the modem drivers. The second file (cfutilityen.zip) contains the modified English language file that Pelaca has spent many hours on.

4. After installation, perform a Soft Reset of your NX by pressing the small button on the back of your unit.

5. Locate and execute the new program "CF Utility" in your launcher (hint: the icon has a picture of a hammer & screwdriver)

6. Insert your new modem into the CF slot on your device. The screen should read:

Brand: CF
Product: 56K Modem JATE

7. Return to your launcher and run your system PREFS utility. Select "Network" in the dropdown menu (upper right).

8. Within Network Preferences tap the dropdown menu next to Service and select the top entry (AT&T). Next, tap the dropdown menu next to Connection and select "Edit Connections".

9. Within "Available Connections" select "New"

10. Within "Edit Connection" replace the name "Custom" with the name of your modem (i.e. AmbiCom, or maybe Pete). Set "Connect to:" to "Modem". Set "Via" to the top setting of "Analog Modem (gibberish)". Tap "Ok" then tap "Done"

11. Now you are back at the "Network Preferences" screen. Replace the service name to your ISP name. Enter your ISP info under "User Name", "Password" & "Phone #". Under the "Connection" setting, select the modem name you entered in step 10 (should be the bottom choice).

12. Connect telephone line (analog) and tap "Connect"

Simple eh?

From: Pelaca
You have to install... the "CFUtilityen.prc" then the "CFNULLinf.prc", "CFmodeminf.prc" and "CFmodemvdrv.prc"...
In the "cfutilityen.zip" you can found the needed files...
The TDK, KAGA, Billionton are supported by Sony but the Princeton and Ambicom works too...
I'm working on the Xircom now with no success for now...

I have gotten my WiFi card to work at my house and certain other places around Austin. My problem is that a lot of the time I will get close to a router/access point and my clie will go through the "initializing-connecting wireless-connecting network-retrying" or I will be able to connect but no data will transfer

I am curious on what a reason might be for this, at my school I have this problem (they have 3com access points) and I will be within about 30 feet and it won't connect. I thought they might have a WEP, but with my network at home where I do use a WEP it won't ever recognize that there is a network available. also I spoke to the guy in charge of messing with all the networks at school and he said "all I do is plug them in and they work" the laptops we use, work with dell truemobile if that helps any. airports I also had a problem with. it has no problem connecting, but it won't transfer any information.

Does your school WLAN use MAC filtering?

Are you using the latest Sony driver from the support site?

There could be other requirements that the Clie doesn't support such as LEAP.

Uncheck PowerSaveMode On in advanced settings.

There are many different scenarios, not all WLAN's are created equal.

Hello,

I read almost all threads here concerning hotsyncing through Wi-Fi, but I definitely cannot figure out how to make it work.
The PC, running XP Pro, is connected via Ethernet cable to my Netgear FM114P wireless router.

My NZ90 can hotsync successfully through USB or even Bluetooth connection (I've also got a TSK USB Bluetooth adapter).

I received today my order from Brando Hong-Kong: a brand new Sony WL110 Wi-Fi card.

I installed the driver on the CD-ROM on the Clie (french), and inserted the card, setup the profile with my Netgear settings (SSID, WEP, etc...) and off I went :-)

Everything's going right: I can smoothly surf with NetFront, check my mail with ClieMail.

Then, I tried to set the devil thing up to hotsync using Wi-Fi...

And I can't manage making it work properly. I tried this link:
http://www.otakunozoku.com/wifihotsync/
but I don't have the "Wireless LAN" option under the HotSync button on the screen :-(

I searched everywhere on my NZ90, but didn't find it...

What the earth did I miss ?
Should I install Sony Mobile Connection Wizard ?
http://www.ita.sel.sony.com/bin/support/support.cgi?whichone=1&installfile=inst_mcw104us.txt&downloadfile=INST_MCW104US.EXE

I don't think so, because it says only for NZ90 purchased in the United-States. I bought mine in France and it runs french Palm OS 5 version.

Could anyone help me about this ?

Thanks !!!!

PS: by the way, I've already set up properly the HotSync Manager in Windows XP taskbar (clicking on Network, configuring the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 and hotsync the NZ90 via USB).

but I don't have the "Wireless LAN" option under the HotSync button on the screen :-(

You have to have the Wireless LAN option displayed under the HotSync button. In the very first post of this thread by me, I put the note shown below, under the above link

There is an error in the web page below, it should be LANSync, not Local HotSync.

Hey Larry,

You've indicated that the WL100 can be used in a Laptop using an adapter and Intel's drivers. Is this possible for the WL110 too? I don't know who the original manufacturer is (if not proprietary Sony)

Thanks and Cheers to you too!

Hi Dan,

Yes, that's the problem, whose driver do you use for the WL110?? As far as I know, it's Sony proprietary. I tried to caution fellow users about this. The WL100 is a good card. Many don't realize that it is the primative Sony driver that is the limitation, not the card itself. Newer is not always better, some want the new NX73 Clie, but I consider it a down grade from the NX70, mainly because the extra Flash ROM will never be useable by the user.

Hi Larry - thanks for the response.

I'm using the same drivers (I think I am, since I downloaded the same from Sony's website) as the WL100. I sure would like to know if the Intel drivers would work. I read somewhere in the web that the FCC application for Sony indicated that the same driver is used for WL110, as in the WL100. Not sure if that signifies something. Anyways, would you recommend me do such a test with the Intel drivers?

Thanks again,
Dan

BTW - one of your tips somewhere in the forum regarding defining fixed IP addresses (as opposed to automatic) helped me get rid of problems on constantly dropping links with wireless hotsync and on-line avantgo surfing.

n2ifp,

Thank you for replying so quickly.

I have the Clie NX 70 V/U it's set up is OS. My ISP is DSL, SBC Global Net.

My wireless lan card is the PEGA-WL110.

The CPU that I hot sync the Clie to is attached to a 2Wire wireless modem. The second computer is hooked up to the internet via 2Wire wireless modem.

I have filled in all of the required pertenant information such as the Profile Name is 2Wire. The network ID SSID is 2WIRE288, the WEP KEY is 40/64bit:10 figures (HEX), the connection mode is infrastructure. Then I went to Advanced Setup and filled in the IP Address, Subnet Mask, Gateway Address, DNS Address. The Auto box is unchecked and the Power Save Mode is unchecked.

When I hit connect it shows connected wireless.

A friend of mine beamed AOL Instant Messenger to my Clie. I can not connect because instant messenger shows timed out.

When trying to connect to SBC Yahoo mail account I receive a SMTP unable to connect. Check server name & port number.

I am so.......confused. Thank you for your help!

Sorry, but I still need more info from you, even though things can be similar, they also can be as different as night and day!

I have the Clie NX 70 V/U it's set up is OS. My ISP is DSL, SBC Global Net.

What operating system is your PC using?

What wireless access point are you using?

Do you have a router?

These questions are necessary as to ascertain your setup.

My wireless lan card is the PEGA-WL110.

The CPU that I hot sync the Clie to is attached to a 2Wire wireless modem. The second computer is hooked up to the internet via 2Wire wireless modem.

Are you saying that you have two modems?

I have filled in all of the required pertenant information such as the Profile Name is 2Wire. The network ID SSID is 2WIRE288, the WEP KEY is 40/64bit:10 figures (HEX), the connection mode is infrastructure. Then I went to Advanced Setup and filled in the IP Address, Subnet Mask, Gateway Address, DNS Address. The Auto box is unchecked and the Power Save Mode is unchecked.

For now disable the WEP, why complicate things, once your up and running you can turn it back on later. SSID is case sensitive too

When I hit connect it shows connected wireless.

First you connect via wireless, the you have to be routed to the internet. The settings then steer it to where you have to go. Connected only means the two units are talking, not necessarily understanding each other, so to speak :).

A friend of mine beamed AOL Instant Messenger to my Clie. I can not connect because instant messenger shows timed out.

When trying to connect to SBC Yahoo mail account I receive a SMTP unable to connect. Check server name & port number.

Don't worry about this now, first you worry about connecting to the internet, okay, the same goes for the AIM.

I am so.......confused. Thank you for your help!

My operating system is windows 98.

My wireless access point is 2WIRE288.

I do not have a router the modem that I have is the 2WIRE 1000SW Home Portal. The Home Portal also acts as a router because I have my downstairs computer connected to the Home Portal via USB and my X Box gaming system is connected to the Home Portal via ethernet cabel.

I do not have 2 modems second computer which is located on the second floor of my home is connected to the internet by a 2Wire LC USB wireless connection.

I have disabled WEP.

SSID is 2WIRE288.

I really can not remember if I did enable DHCP option. I don't even know what that stands for. ??? Or where I would look to see if I did or not. I'm new to the game and I'm still learning the terms, lingo and acronyms.

What do you mean by other internet sharing connection programs ? AOL, WINMX ????

Internet connection sharing is the tying of your internet connection to the LAN connection. For example, if you have a front door and a back door, you would need a hallway to connect the two if you wanted to get from one end to the other.

Windows 98 needs the Internet Connection Sharing enabled or installed.

DHCP is stand for... I forgot... :D It can arrange IP addresses to all computers in the network automatically. Router must have this function.

If you are using router, then DON'T input any IP in CLIE. Use auto in IP address is ok.

n2ifp
07-04-2003, 08:37 AM
If your using a router, then ICS shouldn't be necessary, but I don't know how the Ethernet and USB ports are tied together. I don't remember what DHCP stands for either, other than it assigns IP addresses automatically on the LAN.

DHCP= Dynamic Host something something :D

Dynamic usually means automatic settings

Static usually means manual settings

Per chance, do you have a web link for your 1000SW Home Portal? I'd like to take a look at it, Thanks!

As far as I know you can't directly HotSync to the memory stick. AvantGo is one app that does, so technically I think it would be feasible.

Ah, yes, that might help some, the Clie has to talk to something via RF. It's like a 2 way radio setup where a base station communicates with a mobile unit like a car. Another example would be a cordless phone needs a base to communicate with. Since I have no familiarity with your equipment, I had no clue. I any case Thank you for the feedback :).

There is one error in the above link, use LANSync, not local HotSync in the HotSync pulldown menu.

Remember to use the double exclamaition points for the Primary PC name, very important! Please see the example in the above link.
Well, it seem everyone misses the double exclamation (!!) in "Primary PC Name" configuration!

Is there a Palm Inc. or Sony document pointing to this? Such details should be included in build-in help!

Anyway, it worked for me using Local Hotsync as pictured. I think that is important when you are doing a cradle based Network Sync. It does not really matter for WLAN.

A beginner's question on wireless lan wi-fi (I have the w100 but not a card for my desktop yet):

Accroding to some articles (for instance - www.informationweek.com/shared/printableArticle.jhtml?articleID=10808186 ) - Wi-Fi security is either a joke or it is very expensive.

Is this a real problem? In real life, that is at home - not at work, is wi-fi security really a non issue - as long as you don't have important sensitive info on your computer?

I never had NetFront crash on me, but the PTL errors drove me crazy, some sites were inaccessible, and so on. With the NX80, the PTL errors have stopped, but certain sites like Yahoo still come up with a mime error that PocketLink II handles with no trouble.

do you expect to use the keyboard more than grafitti? just curious... actually, i think the form factor is nice for pc type things, like browsing (which i did on the way home via my t68i), but i just the pda mostly for to do's and memos, and have a lot of them, thus the portrait mode is really better.,..

i think for putting it in your pocket, the traditional shape is better, but i'm looking to put it in a holster, and then the form factors are equal in my opinion, or the ux is a bit superior and less geeky looking..,.

Yes, he did it to differentiate it from the unmodified version of NetFront.

Since he changed the name to NetFrontH, then all internal references of NetFront3 had to be changed too.

Your correct in that it isn't necessary, unless the app's file name is changed. It might be just a programming habit for him.

From the limited knowledge, you could use Netfront for internet, and pretty much a lot of places you can go with the software. For accessing hotmail, you'll need it to be tweaked, as it was mentioned on the top of this page by greg and larry.

Hope that i have answered your question and didn't embarassed myself. =P

Go to the Sony support site and get the drivers for your NX. I am sorry but I do not know the link for your model, but it is not difficult to find...

Right, you have to download the correct one for your region Clie.

The 100K driver is on the various Sony support sites. The one for your area should be listed on the right side of the ClieSource home page. When you HotSync the driver, it will split itself into 4 files totaling approx 100KB.

linksys WAP-11 to Clie NX73V w/PEGA WL110
I have read much of what has been posted and I feel frustrated that I cannot connect at home. I have been able to use WIFI at only a few locations where others don't seem to work. I also get the message Invalid Network Settings.
I have pinged on my home computer to determine the IP address, I have the Sbnet Mas, gateway addresss and primary DNS entered. I have tried powersave enabled/disabled, no luck.

I have comcast cable, a linksys WAP-11 My computer is hooked up wirelessly and it works.

I don't understand how you can do that without a router? I have a Linksys WAP-11 and a four port router that assigns the IP's via DHCP. Yes, I have Comcast too.

I have an WL100 on an NZ90 with the latest WL100_ENUS.prc installed, I went thru the step by step instructions in the manual, but I fail to see in the "HotSync" window, when selecting "Modem" ,the >>>"Wireless LAN"<<< I only see >> "Standard Modem and BT to Sony-E T610"

When I go to "Preferences" then "Network" and select service: "Wireless LAN" in "Connections" there is no LAN indicated.

Any help would be appreciated

OK, I am about to go nuts!

Does anyone know why when I do into the "hotsync" on my Clie and select "modem" the only choice I have is "standard modem"????

I can't get past this to even try anything else:(

Also, dumb question, but do I need an wireless ISP to simply be able to use an IM program on my Clie while in my house that has a WIFI network setup in it?

Thanks:D

You need to configure it step by step first. Then you'll see that screen.

I have been trying to reestablish a WL-100/NX60 connection that was working fine earier in the year.
I didn't use the card for several months and have a new install of XP on my desktop unit. Now, I want to go back to the card and it won't connect.
I have browsed the board and tried several routes. but I never get "wireless" in the Prefs/Network popup. Only things like UNIX,Verio, WindowsRAS,Earthlink.
Larry, anybody???

I know the UX50 has the ability to scan for Wi-Fi. Is there any way to copy the files from the UX50 that allow the scanning onto the NX series?

Hello All,

After launching ICS to share my dialup internet connection, my WiFi's IP became 192.168.0.1

I connected successfully on my laptop using adhoc connection by specifying the IP: 192.168.0.1 on my UX50, however when I launched Smbmate and tried to access the shared folder of my laptop I get a message from my laptop that IP address conflicts in the network.

I believe this is because when connecting to the shared folder I specify the IP of the laptop to be: 192.168.0.1 (same with the WiFi's IP)

Is there a way to have a separate IP for my adhoc WiFi and another IP for my laptop?

Please help.

Thanks a lot!

I'd like to know about that too. I work as a network consultant and it would be really handy to be able to scan for wireless at client sites.

That's all good (I'm writing this on my nx73v) but I can't seem to hotsync over my network. I'm using static IPs on my network (just to be sure), but I just can't seem to find my PC . Any suggestions?

I got my NX-80V with a WL100 to work at my university.
All I had to do was:
-Have the computer center register my MAC address to my user account.
-Enter the exact SSID
-enter the 10 digit WEP
-Infrastructure
-power saver off
-DNS and IP auto

Hope this helps someone. The university is just using a simple MAC filter to restrict access.

Later,

Matte.

I am new user with NX73V and WL100 (refurb). I can connect at home and several other sites just fine, often without the Powersave option.

I have found a couple of sites by using the "any" SSID and would like to find their real SSID's I realize from reading this and other threads that Palm OS 5.0 won't really let us do what we want. Surely ther must be some way we can get the SSID, through a command in the log area perhaps? Or by some web request to the IP address of the router or ???

Thank you in advance
