View Full Version : Using WL100 in a laptop

What can I get that will allow me to use the WL100 in a laptop PCMCIA slot? I have heard about adaptors, but do not know which exactly to get. Does it have to be Type II CF compatible? If I find one that is Type II, will it work with a laptop? Are there drivers out there that support this?

Any CF II PCMCIA adapter should do it and down load the driver from intel, it's about 500K in size. I used the standard CF adapter that comes with some memory cards.

Hmm, anything else you need to know :D?

Does it work like a normal PC WIFI card? How good is the reception?

Yes it does, in fact it's a very good card!
The Intel Pro Wireless, it was just as pricey as the Sony version.

I don't remember, ten bucks maybe. Any CF to PCMCIA memory adapter shuold work, they are relatively inexpensive.

But you have to get CF type II, right? You can't use a CF type I adapter, can you?

You just need a cheap CF adapter, it's no big deal.

I looked at the Sandisk one, and it only talks about using the card for memory. Can still use it for the WL100?

Yes, that's all I had done awhile back was use some cheap CF memory card adapter. Nothing special, just a metal casing with sockets.

Now I know this will work in the Pocket PC pda, but does anyone know if it'll work with Handheld PC 2000, which runs Windows CE 3.0 just like PPC? I need assurance because once I open it, I can't return it without charges. Anyone know?

I got the SanDisk adapter, and it works fine (meaning the card is recognized, etc.). I couldn't get online with it, but that was because I haven't had time yet to work through some XP/WEP issues

n2ifp,
does the link to the CF to pcmia card...work with email, online browsing, hotsyncing?....
if so...so basically any CF to pcmia card would do the job right?...since it is just sockets that allow data to go to the WL100 card...

It works like any other LAN card and yes I can do it all. My laptop has it's own card now, but both my brother and myself tried it out when we first got the cards. We both had PCMCIA adapters from back in the Windows CE days.

Here is where you can download a PPC driver.

I have NOT tested it though.

I use both PocketLinkII and Blazer. Both are available on Palmgear. NetFront already comes with the Clie.
You can use the Clie Mail that comes with the Clie, I use iambic mail though, personal pref.

Not really, I just prefered the interface a little better. I don't sync with the desktop as I set my Clie to leave messages on the server and use it via WiFi.

the link for the sandisk states:
"Units available for CompactFlash (Type I*), "
"*Type I CompactFlash is the most widely used. The dimensions are 43mm x 36mm x 3.3mm. "
in an earlier post...someone said we need compact flash type II....i also saw that these cards fit in PCMIA type II....I just want to clarify....what exactly do we need....CF type I or II....and PCMIA type II?

Just had another thought...
A lot of printers now have memory slots for printing directly from your cards. My color printer, an Epson Stylus Photo 825, uses a PCMCIA slot and included two adapters. One PCMCIA to CF, and one PCMCIA to "everything else".
I just placed the WL100 (using the CF adapter) into my XP notebook and XP detected the card imediately. All I needed was the driver that was posted earlier in this thread (Thank you n2ifp!!) and I was surfing. Now I have a backup WiFi card for my notebook!

The WLAN 100 is a CF type I card. You need to get a type I, not type II adapter. Type 1 adapters are cheaper :)

Okay, you can use either type1 or type II adapter. Use the cheapest you can find as I have both types.

Radio Shack has these??? I can't find them what's the part number or info. I don't want to wait for something to be delivered.
Also what is the difference between CF and Ultra CF that Sandisk has on that link they have a special addapter for Ultra but it's still only $9.99 so can I use that and is there and advantage.

BUY.com (http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10042462&loc=101&rp=true) has the Viking adaptor for 9.39, they also have some nice bundles with flash cards and free shipping :D

Thank you $9.39 and free shipping ! It's on it's way now. Sandisk wanted $7 shipping for it. It was only $9.99 I'm not paying 70% shipping on anything!
Every local store I asked looked at me like I was purple when I asked for this thing.

I am having trouble with this process.
I purchased a CF card adapter (Dazzle), downloaded the driver from Intel as listed on this thread (2011_PCCARD.EXE), executed the .exe, inserted my new CF card adapter with the Clie lan card in it into my laptop, got prompted for installing new hardware and browsed over to the .inf file that was installed after executing the 2011_PCCARD.EXE. After all that, I am told that the appropriate driver can not be found.
I thought this was going to be a no brainier obviously not. Any help will be greatly appreciated and hopefully others after me will benefit from my exercise.

The card adapter is just an extender with a compatible plug and socket. A type II PCMCIA adapter just allows room for the physical dimensions required for Type II device like a IBM Microdrive. The Type II is cutout on both sides. Type I is only open on one side.
I know this from taking a couple of them apart and it exposes the bare wires that travel the length of the adapter.

The card reader I am refering to is a pcmcia cf reader, not ausb type.

I am sorry, I saw dazzle and I immediately was thinking a card reader. Others were having difficulties with Dazzle card readers. I have been bouncing around too much with beta testing a CF memory driver too. Doing too many things and none of them right! Again, I am sorry for being such an idiot :(!
For Win XP it was a no brainer and I should have been more explicit about it. One has a tendency to forget that not everyone is using the same PC operating system.
Win XP only needed the base card driver as the rest is built into XP. I don't know if Win 2K requires additional files or not. My brother and I only experimented with the WLAN card on our XP laptops.
For Win 2K there is a device driver update: 04/15/03 in addition to the PC Card driver.
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df/filter_results.asp?strOSs=19&strTypes=BIO%2CDRV%2CARC&ProductID=450&OSFullName=Windows*+2000&submit=Go%21
I am not sure if the update is required for WIN 2K.
Again, I sincerely apologize for the confusion!

It does work :) Now I can use WL100 with my Clie NX60 and IPaq 3955. I wish there was Internet Explorer for PalmOS :)
