Has anyone else seen this problem?

TomTom Navigator 5 (I'm using 5.12 but 5.2 was the same) gives me a warning message every time I HotSync. It turns out that the warning is produced because Navigator creates two files that are the same name except some letters are different case (upper or lower). For example CurrentMap.dat and currentmap.dat. On the Palm, these are distinct files but they are not unique names to Windows.

The solution provided by TomTom was to delete the files. This works for only one HotSync because Navigator recreates the two files. I tested this by deleting both of the above mentioned files and then running Navigator. It created CurrentMap.dat (uppercase). I left Navigator and re-entered. Upon leaving it had created currentmap.dat (lowercase). After running a couple of other tests, it appears that Navigator creates whichever file (upper or lower) is not there. This means that there will always be a HotSync problem.

This is very annoying because I never know whether the HotSync waraning dialog is due to TomTom warnings from the files or whetehr it's something else that I care about.

Any suggestions? Anyone else seen this? I'm using a T3.

Thanks

Bob

Bob,

I simply killed the sync for TomTom in the desktop HotSync custom menu by opting for "Do nothing." I install maps to my SD card and itineraries are also stored there which I selectively backup with RescoBackUp. Not using the conduit may be severe but I feel safer not using it as it really doesn't serve any useful purpose for me.

Thanks for the reply. The only option I have for TomTom in my HotSync is "Install TomTom Maps". Should there be another? Disabling that doesn't affect whether the files mentioned above get syncronized, at least on my T3. Is there a way to disable syncing of specific files? Or a way to get TomTom not to generate them alternately.

Thanks

Bob

Bob,

That's the conduit I disabled (Install maps) that was causing me grief too.

TomTom's installation routines are, to be generous, extremely poor:( When I upgraded to v5.210 it tried to install maps I already had installed despite the conduit being disabled. Probably because there is a record on my laptop of those installations (which BTW I now do direct to the SD card in a slot on my laptop). I found if I halted the install and restarted it, only the application was installed and the dumb redundant map deal disappeared.

The key is to be patient and willing to restart things until they look right. At least that's what I've found :)

Best!

Try using a file manager (eg FileZ) on the device to change the offending file attributes to not back up (ie take the tick out of the 'backup' box). The files aren't that important anyway, and will simply recreate themselves if you ever delete them, so a backup simply isn't necessary.

eillo7,

Maps are stored on the SD card and for whatever reason FileZ doesn't give the "full" details menu for other than files on the device itself, so one can not uncheck that file attribute. Maybe I'm missing something but ....

BTW UniCMD does the same.... full detailed attributes for files on the device but meager details for those on SD cards.

Well, do-oh. I pride myself in lateral thinking but I missed this one. Works like a charm - of course.

A bit of a glitch. I use SyncAll to make sure that everything gets synced. It sets the Backup bit on every time I tunr on my T3 or do a reset. And it's automatic. In other words it doesn't have an enable/disable switch. So I need something that will force the backup bits on but has a file selector. In the mean time, I'm removing SyncAll because I do card backups as well.

Thanks eillo7!

PS Found a compomise. I use ZLauncher so I moved SyncAll to my card with a shortcut in the Launcher. Since it's not in RAM, it won't change the backup bits automatically. I made myself a note (in Agendus) to run SyncAll once a week to make sure that everything else is set. And actually I just need to set the bit off on one of the two files. Thanks again!
